Classic Winner Mo Donegal Celebrates A Colt As His First Foal

Spendthrift Farm's Mo Donegal, the classic-winning son of Uncle Mo, sired his first reported foal this week when a colt was born at WinStar Farm in Versailles, the stallion's farm said in a release Friday afternoon.

Bred by Alfredo Gastaneta, the bay colt is out of the Declaration of War mare Andavete, a half-sister to 2020 GI Kentucky Derby third-place finisher Mr. Big News (Giant's Causeway) and hailing from the immediate family of champion sire Saint Ballado.

“This is a good size colt with good bone and leg underneath him,” said Fernando Macchiavello, agent for Alfredo Gastaneta. “He looks like an Uncle Mo, with that hip and balance and long legs. He has that look to him.”

Mo Donegal joined Nyquist as classic-winning sons of leading sire Uncle Mo when he captured his biggest win in the 2022 GI Belmont S. Campaigned by trainer Todd Pletcher and owners Repole Stable and Donegal Racing, Mo Donegal also won the GII Remsen S. at Aqueduct, defeating Grade I winner Zandon (Upstart), and the GII Wood Memorial S. over classic winner Early Voting (Gun Runner).

Mo Donegal retired to Spendthrift with earnings of $1,511,800. He bred 186 mares in his first book in 2023 and is set to stand his second season for a fee of $15,000 S&N.

First Foal Reported for Dual GISW Mandaloun

Juddmonte's Mandaloun (Into Mischief–Brooch, by Empire Maker) was represented by his first foal over the weekend, according to a representative for the farm Thursday afternoon.

The foal, a filly, was born at Jay Goodwin's Kentucky-based Goodwin Farm out of a mare not named in the release. The dam of the new filly is reported to be “out of a stakes-producing Gone West mare whose dam is a full-sister to [Canadian] Horse of the Year Dance Smartly and half-sister to the breed-shaping stallion Smart Strike.”

The bay filly is “big and strong with a ton of class,” said Goodwin.

Winner of the GI Haskell S. and two other graded events, Mandaloun was also promoted to first from a runner-up finish in the 2021 GI Kentucky Derby. He will stand in 2024 for a fee of $20,000 LFSN.

First Foal Reported For Jack Christopher

Ashford Stud's three-time Grade I winner Jack Christopher (Munnings) was represented by his first reported foal when a filly was born Jan. 11 at River Valley Farm in New York.

The filly is the first produce from the unraced She's a Go Go Girl (Union Rags), who was acquired by Whitecloud Bloodstock for $30,000 at last year's Keeneland November. The deeper female family includes Grade II-winning juvenile filly Magicalmysterycat (Storm Cat).

“We couldn't be happier with this filly,” said Dr. Scott Ahschwede who bred her along with his wife Dr. Patricia Ahschwede and fellow veterinarian Dr. Scott Pierce. “A pretty first foal with leg and size. A great start to our season.”

Winner of the GI Champagne S. as a juvenile, Jack Christopher won the GI Woody Stephens S. and GI H. Allen Jerkens S. over seven furlongs at three.

“Jack Christopher was an exceptional talent,” said his trainer Chad Brown. “I've never had a dirt horse with such brilliance. He never disappointed us in a workout or a race and was just a pleasure to train.”

Jack Christopher is one of 73 stakes winners for his sire, who also stands at Ashford.

Nashville Sires First Foal

WinStar Farm's 'TDN Rising Star' Nashville (Speightstown) was represented by his first foal when a filly was born Monday, Jan. 8, at Maryland's Murmur Farm. Bred by Wasabi Ventures Stables LLC, Robert Angelo, Terry Schuck and Greenspring Mares, the filly is the first foal from Maryland-bred stakes winner Why Not Tonight (Tapiture).

“She's a leggy, correct filly with plenty of quality, and we are ecstatic with her as the first foal out of Wasabi's first stakes winner,” said George Adams of Housatonic Bloodstock. “We'll be breeding multiple mares back to Nashville this year.”

The brilliantly fast Nashville won his maiden by 11 1/2 lengths at first asking at Saratoga, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:14.48 and followed up with an equally dominating allowance win at Keeneland before winning the 2020 Perryville S. in 1:07.89, a time significantly faster against the clock than that of the GI Breeders' Cup Sprint (1:08.61). He also won a Fair Grounds allowance in 1:08.61 in 2022, the fastest time at the six-furlong distance in over two years.

“We are thrilled to receive the first live foal report for Nashville,” said Elliott Walden, president, CEO, and racing manager of WinStar Farm. “He was extremely well received in his first season at stud in 2023 and he will be very busy again in 2024. With the recent loss of our beloved Speightstown, news of Nashville's first foal has brought plenty of smiles around WinStar.”

Having bred 204 mares in his first year at stud in 2023 and with his in-foal mares fetching up to $850,000, Nashville is standing the upcoming breeding season at a fee of $15,000 S & N.
