Coal Front Sires First Foal

Spendthrift Farm's Coal Front (Stay Thirsty–Miner's Secret, by Mineshaft) sired his first reported foal Jan. 26 when a filly was born at Shade Tree Farm in Ocala, FL. Bred by Tracy Pinchin & Kenneth D'Oyen, the flashy bay filly is out of the Wildcat Heir mare Defying Gravity.

“This is a good foal. Nice, big, strong filly with a lot of leg, good shoulder and hip. I like her best of the three foals the mare's had,” said Bert Pilcher, owner of Shade Tree Farm. “She was quickly up and quickly nursed, everything was perfect. If I owned the stallion, I'd sure be happy about this foal. I think she's going to be a knockout yearling.”

Coal Front won eight times from 13 starts, with five of those victories coming in graded stakes, and earned $1,825,280. A $575,000 2-year-old purchase, Coal Front is set to stand his second season for a fee of $5,000 S&N.

Champion Mitole’s First Foal is a Colt

Spendthrift Farm's Mitole (Eskendereya-Indian Miss, by Indian Charlie) was represented by his first foal when a colt was born at Ballyrankin Stud near Lexington. The colt, bred by Jeff Ganje and out of Kiss Mine (Mineshaft), was reported as born Jan. 23. Kiss Mine captured six black-type wins and was multiple graded placed during her racing campaign.

“He's a very attractive, good-sized colt with a nice hip and a lot of quality,” said Sally Lockhart of Ballyrankin Stud. “I'm very pleased with him.”

Mitole was named Eclipse champion sprinter for 2019 during a season that netted four Grade I victories, including the Breeders' Cup Sprint, the Met Mile, the Forego S., and the Churchill Downs S. The earner of over $3.1 million raced in the colors of Bill and Corinne Heiligbrodt before retiring to Spendthrift for the 2020 season. He covered 230 mares last year, the second-highest number for a freshman of 2020 behind only his studmate Vino Rosso (Curlin), who was also recently represented by his first foal.

Mitole will stand the 2021 breeding season for $15,000, stands and nurses terms.

First Foal for Maximus Mischief a Florida-Bred Colt

Maximus Mischief (Into Mischief–Reina Maria, by Songandaprayer), one of three sons of 2020’s leading sire on the Spendthrift Farm roster, was represented by his first foal when a colt was born early Saturday, Jan. 9. The bay colt is a Florida-bred out of Rosetta’s Gift (Two Step Salsa) and is also the first foal for the mare.

“This colt is very nice with a lot of size for a first foal,” said Angela Ingenito, who bred both the foal and his dam. “The mare is a maiden and rather plain, but the foal looks like [Maximus Mischief] who has certainly moved up the mare. I’m very excited. I see a lot of Into Mischief. He has a nice hip, a lot of bone, a good front end, and good head and neck. It’s a nice representation of the sire.”

Maximus Mischief was undefeated in three starts at two, culminating in a front-running score in the GII Remsen S. After one start at three–a third-place finish in the GII Fasig-Tipton Holy Bull S.–he was retired due to a soft tissue injury and entered stud at Spendthrift last year. He covered 196 mares in his first book and will stand for $7,500 this year.
