First Mare In foal To Claiborne’s GISW Annapolis

Claiborne Farm Feb. 29 reported the first mare has checked in foal to Annapolis (War Front), the operation said in a release Thursday.

The 5-year-old was bred to St Claude (Tiznow), who is owned by Pete and Martha Williams and is boarded at Nicky Drion Thoroughbreds. She is from the family of Horse of the Year Flightline and tallied her first registered colt Jan. 12 by Army Mule.

A graded stakes winner at 2 and 3 as a homebred for Bass Racing under trainer Todd Pletcher, Annapolis set a new stakes record in the GI Coolmore Turf Mile at Keeneland.

Annapolis's dam, My Miss Sophia (Unbridled's Song), was a graded stakes winner on dirt and runner-up in the GI Kentucky Oaks. The Claiborne sire also includes 'TDN Rising Star' GI Florida Derby hero Materiality (Afleet Alex), GI Alabama S. victress Embellish the Lace (Super Saver) and GI Travers S. victor Afleet Express (Afleet Alex).

A Dubawi Filly for Arc Heroine Alpinista

Kirsten Rausing's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) has produced her first foal, a filly by Dubawi (Ire).

A fourth-generation Lanwades homebred, Alpinista, who is out of the Listed-winning Hernando (Fr) mare Alwilda (GB), herself a daughter of the treble Group 1 winner Albanova (GB) (Alzao), won six Group 1 races during her four seasons in training with Sir Mark Prescott in Newmarket.

Rausing said, “Following family tradition, the daughter of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner is a grey – all females in her family going back to [twelfth dam] Lady Josephine having been of that coat colour.

She continued, “I had been hoping for the mare to produce a filly, so I'm obviously thrilled and very grateful to Alpinista, who, as usual, can do no wrong.”

Alpinista is set to visit Siyouni (Fr) at the Aga Khan Studs' Haras de Bonneval in Normandy in her second season.

First Foal for Sequel’s Fire At Will

The first foal by GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner and Sequel Stallions sire Fire At Will (Declaration of War–Flirt, by Kitten's Joy) was born recently.

Bred in New York by Horse Haven Racing and born on Jan. 30, the colt is the first foal out of the unraced Marital Joy (Practical Joke). The mare is from the same extended family as Breeders' Cup winner Shared Account (Pleasantly Perfect) and her Breeders' Cup-winning daughter Sharing (Speightstown).

“The colt has a lot of scope to him,” said Sequel's Becky Thomas. “He has a good hind end, like his sire, and is overall very well balanced. This is exactly what we were hoping to see out of the first crop for Fire At Will.”

Fire At Will will stand the 2024 season at Sequel in New York for $5,000.
