Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: August 30, 2020

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are a pair of American-bred horses each making its career in separate races Sunday at Kokura Racecourse:

4th-KOK, ¥9,680,000 ($91k), Maiden, 3yo, 1200mT
SEIUN MORI (c, 3, Speightstown–Bryan’s Jewel, by Rockport Harbor) is the second foal to make the races from his dam, odds-on winner of the 2013 GIII Obeah S. and later sold for $580K with this foal in utero at the Keeneland November Breeding Stock sale in 2016. Seiun Mori fetched $225K as a KEESEP yearling in 2018, while his year-younger half-brother–now named Aviano (Medaglia d’Oro) and up to three furlongs at Belmont Park–was purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners for $775K at Fasig-Tipton Saratoga last summer. Timber Town consigns Seiun Mori’s yearling full-brother as hip 518 next month at Keeneland. B-Timber Town Stable & Jane Winegardner (KY)

5th-KOK, ¥13,400,000 ($126k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1200mT
KOEI BRAVE (c, 2, Run Away and Hide–Officer Allie, by Officer), a $40,000 acquisition out of the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Santa Anita fall yearling sale, was one of just 10 horses to breeze an eighth of a mile in :9 4/5 and was hammered down for $170K at this year’s OBS March Sale. The California-bred is the most expensive juvenile for his now-expatriated sire since Kaleem Shah paid $325K for future GSW & GISP juvenile Run Away at Barretts in 2017. B-Jack & Barbara Owens (CA)

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale Catalog Now Online

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 553 yearlings for its 2020 Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale, to be held on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6. The auction, which will be held immediately following the rescheduled Preakness Stakes, will be conducted at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md.

Hips 1-200 will be offered in the Monday session, which will begin at 1 p.m. The sale will begin with a large group of New York-breds, which are cataloged together as hips 1-154 this year.

Hips 201-553 will be offered in the Tuesday session, which will begin at 10 a.m.

“This is a strong catalog, with our entries up 27 percent over last year,” commented Midlantic director of sales Paget Bennett. “Consignors have a lot of confidence in the Midlantic marketplace and have supported the sale with increased sire power and quality. We are also pleased to welcome major Kentucky and New York-based consignors to Midlantic this year.”

Bennett continued: “Conducting the sale on the Monday and Tuesday after the Preakness adds another exciting element to this year's auction, as it provides those participating in Preakness weekend racing a nearby venue to shop for quality yearlings. With 10 different state-bred programs represented in the catalog, the sale provides great opportunities for both national and regional racing stables.”

The Midlantic Fall Yearlings Sale ranks among the top of all major North American yearling sales in numerous performance categories, according to statistics recently released by The BloodHorse MarketWatch. These include percentage of Grade 1 winners, graded stakes winners, and 2-year-old winners produced from horses sold.

The catalog may now be viewed online, and will also be available via the equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogues will be available beginning Sept. 8.

Phone bidding and online bidding services will also be available.

Keeneland & Fasig Credentials Available Via the Virtual Badge App

Earlier this week, Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton released their joint safety protocols for their upcoming September Sales, which included a credential system for all attendees, including buyers. All consignors and their staffs, vets and their staffs and media are required to provide proof of a negative COVID-19 test 10 days prior to the start of the Sept. 9-10 Fasig-Tipton Sale.

Keeneland and Fasig-Tipton have partnered with a trusted technology provider, Virtual Badge, to serve their digital credential needs for both September sales. Both sales companies will share a common credential, accessible from your mobile device on the Virtual Badge app. In order to request a credential, interested parties must complete the following steps:

  1. Download the Virtual Badge app on your smartphone in your App Store or Google Play. Create an account within the app, log in and select “Keeneland” or “Fasig-Tipton” under Organization.
  2. Complete the credential application. Select your role at the sale and complete the questionnaire.

Buyers and their agents should complete the form and submit your request. No other action is needed.

All other sales participants should indicate whether you will be testing at Keeneland/Fasig-Tipton or off site. If testing at Keeneland or Fasig-Tipton, your results will be linked to your Virtual Badge account once a negative test is received. If testing off site, upload a copy of your test result into the app.

  1. Credential approved. You will receive notification within 48 hours after submitting your request and test results are received. Your approved credential will appear in the Virtual Badge app on your phone, which will be scanned at entry to the sales ground each day.

An approved credential issued by Keeneland or Fasig-Tipton will be valid for both sales, and therefore you will only need to complete this process once. Please apply with the organization that you will first enter within 10 days of your COVID-19 test.

The release also expanded on other sales protocols, such as the policies in the back ring and barn areas.

  • Barn Area

– The barn area is open to credentialed participants.

– Participants must wear a face covering and socially distance at all times. Only consignors and their staff will be permitted to enter barns and shedrows.

– Van drivers are not permitted to leave their vehicles, and therefore consignors must meet their horses at the receiving chute to unload.

  • Back Holding Ring & Sales Ring

– Capacity in the Back Holding Ring will be reduced to two horses at a time with a maximum of three representatives per horse (one groom, one showperson and one consignor). No one else may enter this area or congregate in the chute area.

– To limit contact, the show person responsible for the horse will also lead the horse while in the Sales Ring.

  • Sales Pavilion

– Capacity will be limited in the Sales Arena to 40%. No seating will be permitted on the benches encircling the Sales Arena.

– Bidding locations have been expanded to allow for social distancing. In addition to the Sales Arena and Back Holding Ring, buyers may bid in the Show Ring.

  • Sales Offices

– The Sales Counter will operate as normal but we have constructed plexiglass to protect sales participants and staff. Access to this area will be limited based on the number of people in the office at a given time.

– The Sales Accounting Offices will be expanded for increased space and distancing. Signage will be available to point to this area located to the left of the Sales Counter.

The Administrative Offices at Keeneland are closed. All paperwork should be submitted to the Sales Counter or the Stable Office.

Fasig-Tipton Consolidates Saratoga Fall, Midlantic December Mixed Sales For 2020

Due to the current travel restrictions put in place by the state of New York to combat the spread of COVID-19, Fasig-Tipton will not conduct the Saratoga Fall Sale as originally scheduled on Oct. 20 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Instead, for this year, Fasig-Tipton will combine the auction with its Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age sale, which will now be held over two days on Dec. 7 and 8.

Governor Andrew Cuomo's New York Travel Advisory requires any individuals that travel to New York – from any of the states currently listed – to complete a mandatory 14-day quarantine upon arrival in the state. There are currently 35 states/territories listed under this travel advisory, including horse racing regions Kentucky, Florida, Maryland, Virginia, South Carolina, California, and Texas.

“The current travel advisory requirements make it virtually impossible for many buyers from out of state to attend an auction in Saratoga,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “We do not know what the duration or scope of the New York Travel Advisory will be in October. Combining our Saratoga Fall and Midlantic December sales into a two-day auction in Maryland is the prudent and logical course of action at this point in time.”

The Midlantic December Mixed and Horses of Racing Age sale will be conducted on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 7-8, at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium, Md. Entries for the main catalog will close on Sept. 18. The entry deadline for the Horses of Racing Age Supplement is Nov. 13.
