Notable US-Bred Runners in Japan: Jan. 8, 2022

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. The first weekend of racing for the new year takes place at Chukyo and Nakayama, featuring a pair of Group 3 tests over a mile for newly turned 3-year-olds and each featuring one American-bred. Those horses will appear in Saturday's TDN, in the meantime, here are the runners of interest for Saturday's programs:

MASCHIETTA (f, 3, Into Mischief–Star Billing, by Dynaformer) is the second foal to make the races for her dam, upset winner of the 2011 GI Matriarch S. for owner/breeder George Krikorian and subsequently purchased by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Farm for $2.3 million in foal to Giant's Causeway at Keeneland November in 2013. Also from the same female family as MGISW Stellar Jayne (Wild Rush) and Krikorian's MGISW Starrer (Dynaformer), Maschietta cost $180K at KEESEP in 2020. B-Mt Brilliant Broodmares II LLC (KY)

7th-CKO, ¥14,250,000 ($123k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
JU TARO (c, 3, Arrogate–Bodacious Babe, by Mineshaft) made an enormous impression in his Nov. 13 debut at Hanshin, bounding clear through the Hanshin stretch to break his maiden on the bridle by a dozen lengths (see below, gate 9). The colt's dam, runner-up in the 2017 GIII Sugar Swirl S., was among the first mares covered by Arrogate in 2018 and was hammered down to Juddmonte subsidiary Breffni Farm for $350K at KEENOV later that year. 9th-NKY, ¥19,530,000 ($169k), Allowance, 3yo, 1800m
Like Ju Taro, JASPER GREAT (c, 3, Arrogate–Shop Again, by Wild Again) provided his late sire with a wide-margin maiden winner, graduating by 10 lengths at Hanshin Oct. 9 (see below, gate 2). The $200K Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase graduate was part of the Breeders' Cup team sent over by trainer Hideyuki Mori, but he never factored after a slow start and finished better than 14 lengths behind Corniche (Quality Road) with a fair bit of pari-mutuel support. A half-brother to GISW Power Broker (Pulpit) and SW Fierce Boots (Tiznow), Jasper Great is out of a stakes-winning half-sister to GISW Miss Shop (Deputy Minister). B-Jamm Ltd (KY)

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Tokyo Racecourses. HYPER STORM (f, 2, Stormy Atlantic–Queen's Turf {Jpn}, by Deep Impact {Jpn}) is the first produce for her dam, purchased for nearly $490K as a foal at the 2012 JRHA Select Sales who made a successful career debut as the favorite in a 1400-meter newcomers event on the dirt at this track nearly seven years ago. The May foal's second dam is a full-sister to Furioso (Jpn) (Brian's Time), a nine-time stakes winner and runner-up in the G1 February S. on the dirt in Japan. B-Winchester Farm (KY)

6th-TOK, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1600m
SUCCESS LAUREL (JPN) (c, 2, Mastery–Courtesan, by Street Sense) is the first Japanese-foaled produce out of her dam, a two-time stakes winner and twice Grade III-placed on the turf for Ramona Bass and Christophe Clement. Purchased in utero for $250K at KEENOV in 2018, the bay was knocked down for better than $426K as a yearling at the 2020 Hokkaido Summer Yearling Sale, the third-priciest of his freshman sire (by Candy Ride {Arg})'s first-crop yearlings reported as sold. Pretty Discreet (Private Account), the dam of GISW sire and 'TDN Rising Star' Discreet Cat (Forestry), GISW Discreetly Mine (Mineshaft) and SW & MGISP Pretty Wild (Wild Again) serves as the colt's third dam. B-Oshima Bokujo

6th-HSN, ¥13,400,000 ($118k), Newcomers, 2yo, 1800m
SHAILENE (f, 2, Arrogate–Amen Hallelujah, by Montbrook), a $150K KEESEP yearling acquisition, was knocked down to Katsumi Yoshida for an even $1 million at this year's OBS April sale–second in price only to likely champion 'TDN Rising Star' and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile hero Corniche (Quality Road)–after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. MGSW and four-time Grade I-placed Amen Hallelujah was purchased by the Courtelis's Town & Country for $950K in foal to Distorted Humor at KEENOV in 2013. She changed hands for $80K pregnant to Union Rags at the same auction last year and was RNAd for $135K at this year's KEENOV sale. B-Town & Country Horse Farms LLC (KY)

 

 

 

FOOLISH HOBBY (f, 2, Arrogate–Flatter Up, by Flatter) gives her sire a second crack at a third Japanese winner in this same heat. A daughter of the Grade III-placed Flatter Up, the gray was sold for $260K at last year's Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase and made $450K at the auction house's Gulfstream Sale after covering two furlongs in a slick :21 1/5 (see below). The filly's granddam, Tenacious Tina (Benchmark), who is responsible for MGSP Tina Tina (Paddy O'Prado), is a half-sister to young sire and GISW Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile). ISHTAR (JPN) (f, 3, American Pharoah–Mohini {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) is a full-sister to U.S.-bred Pista, a Group 3 winner in England and Group 1-placed in France, whose dam was covered once again by American Pharoah before her export to Japan in 2017. The bay filly is out of a daughter of champion Denebola (Storm Cat), granddam of G1 Prix de Diane heroine Senga (Blame) and SW Bolting (War Front), while her champion third dam Coup de Genie (Mr. Prospector)–a full-sister to Machiavellian–was responsible for the dam of Japanese-based sire Bago (Fr) (Nashwan), G1SW Maxios (GB) (Monsun {Ger}) and SW/MGSP Beta (GB) (Selkirk). Empire Maker Colt Ices Rivals, Scores Rising Star Distinction

Crunched into 2-5 favoritism to build on a debut second at Los Alamitos at the end of June, Messier (Empire Maker) made a bold run to the front fully three furlongs from home and coasted in by 6 1/2 lengths to become a new 'TDN Rising Star' in Friday's fourth race from Santa Anita. Away only fairly beneath Flavien Prat, the $470,000 Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase graduate worked his way up into a chasing second as the debuting Godsend (Midshipman) went a strong gallop up ahead of him. Prat allowed the heavy chalk to stride into the lead midway on the turn, widened without being asked into the stretch and was not fully extended while scoring by a margin that could have been significantly more. He stopped the clock in 1:10.26. Don't Swear Dave (Connect) completed the exacta, one spot ahead of Messier's stablemate Blackadder (Quality Road).

The winner counts Sovereign Award-winning 3-year-old filly Catch the Ring (Seeking the Gold) as his third dam. She is in turn responsible for champion Catch the Thrill (A.P. Indy), the dam of the current stakes winner Curlin's Catch (Curlin). Messier has a foal half-sister by Candy Ride (Arg), and his dam–herself the winner of the 2014 Trillium S. over Woodbine all-weather–was most recently bred to another standout for the same connections in Authentic.

Messier is the 12th 'Rising Star' for his sadly departed stallion and second in five days, joining Keeneland maiden winner Haughty. Messier's powerful ownership group nicknamed The Avengers has campaigned fellow Empire Maker-sired 'Rising Stars' Classier, winner of the GI Los Alamitos Derby in July; and Eight Rings, the 2019 GI American Pharoah S. hero. With Donato Lanni acting as agent, the conglomerate bought three more Empire Maker colts at last month's Keeneland September sale for a combined $550,000.

“He came out of that race with a little bruised bulb in his heel,” said Tom Ryan of co-owner SF Racing when asked about Messier's progress from his June 27 unveiling at 1-2 to Friday's breakout performance. “It was nothing major, but you're better to give them plenty of time. We had given him the experience of a race, and it's amazing how horses really thrive and step forward off that experience. Over the summer, he had gradually come back to himself, and he'd shown plenty in the mornings in his recent works.”

The Avengers' deep class of 2-year-old colts also includes the likes of GI Runhappy Del Mar Futurity winner Pinehurst (Twirling Candy).

“He definitely looks like he's got unlimited potential,” Ryan said of Messier. “He's got size and scope–distance won't be an issue with him. He's sound, and mentally he's all there. He's exactly the right kind of horse for Bob Baffert. He's thriving on training and he's a very willing individual.”

Messier is named after NHL Hall of Famer Mark Messier, who was a teammate of Ryan's wife Katie's father Pat Hughes, along with the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Jari Kurri, Paul Coffey and Grant Fuhr on those legendary Edmonton Oilers teams of the 1980s.

“I was fortunate enough to go to Edmonton with Katie's father when they were voted the greatest NHL team in history [in 2017, for the 1984-85 team],” Ryan said. “Katie's uncle, Mark Napier, also played for that team, so it was an amazing family event. Clearly I have no connection to hockey, but Katie is as connected as can be. We had such a nice time, and met some great players–hockey players to me are just the coolest, most modest guys. One of the players who stood out to me was Mark Messier. I've met him several times, and he's always so poised, and such a cool guy; modest beyond belief, and incredibly fit despite having been retired for a long time. He really, really impressed me, and I suppose he was and easily could be considered one of the greatest hockey players of all time.”

The $100K Fasig-Tipton Selected Yearling Showcase graduate is out of a winning half-sister to a pair of black-type winners and will be ridden Sunday afternoon by Yutaka Take.
