Sunday’s Racing Insights: Leslie’s Humor Debuts At Gulfstream Park

4th-GP, $89K, Msw, 3yo, f, 6f, 1:38 p.m. ET.
Bred by Stonehaven Steadings & Leah O'Meara, LESLIE'S HUMOR (Kantharos) makes the races for LSU Stables. Initially sold for $125,000 at the Keeneland September Sale, the chestnut RNA'd for $110,000 at OBS April before going for $500,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Sale in June.

The second to race for La Titina (Distorted Humor), the 3-year-old filly's younger half-brother by Not This Time was purchased for $310,000 last September at Keeneland by Hartley/De Renzo Thoroughbreds.

Granddam and MGISW Ask the Moon (Malibu Moon), a $1.8 million acquisition by Stonestreet while carrying MSW Belgrano (War Front), also produced the stakes placed dam of recent Mucho Macho Man S. runner-up First World War (War Front). TJCIS PPS

Atrocious (Ghostzapper) makes his first start for Reeves Thoroughbred Racing and their partner Stonestreet Stables, who also bred this colt. A $500,000 buy at the Fasig-Tipton Select Saratoga Yearling Sale, the Christophe Clement trainee is out of GII Black-Eyed Susan S. heroine Fiftyshadesofhay (Pulpit). She is also the dam of SW Locally Owned (Distorted Humor). TJCIS PPS

6th-GP, $89K, Msw, 3yo, f, 6f, 2:38 p.m. ET.
The Phipps Stable sends out for her debut Mystifying (Curlin). The homebred is out of SP Puzzling (Ghostzapper) who is also responsible for a 2-year-old by Street Sense. That colt went to Centennial Farms for $500,000 at Keeneland September.

The Shug McGaughey runner hails from an extended female family which includes GI Manhattan H. hero Dancing Forever (Rahy), SW Miss Yearwood (Will Take Charge), GSW Carrumba (Bernardini), and deeper still under her third dam, the strong line of champion 3-year-old filly Heavenly Prize (Seeking the Gold). Sunday Insights: $1.8 Million Daughter Of Quality Road Looks To Shine At Seaside Oval

At last year's Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale, trainer Bob Baffert with agent Donato Lanni bid to $1.8 million to secure NAFISA (Quality Road) on behalf of an undisclosed client who turned out to be Zedan Racing.

Consigned by Lane's End (hip 213), the auction's overall third topper was bred by Greg Goodman's Mt. Brilliant Farm & Ranch and Lane's End's W. S. Farish. It was Goodman who purchased her SP dam Ithinkisawapudycat (Bluegrass Cat) for $2.2 million in-foal to Constitution at the 2016 Keeneland November Sale.

A half-sister to Canadian champion Spring In The Air (Spring At Last), Ithinkisawapudycat's first offspring was 2016 GI Spinaway S. heroine Sweet Loretta (Tapit). She also produced SP Bridlewood Cat (Street Sense), a 2017 Keeneland September purchase for $750,000 by Bridlewood Farm, who herself foaled a yearling by Authentic, a weanling by Essential Quality and visited Tapit for next year.

Thursday’s Insights: $1.5m Uncle Mo Colt Makes Keeneland Debut

Hammering down for $1.5 million at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale, juvenile STOP THE PRESS (Uncle Mo) makes his debut for the ownership group led by West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing. After a sharp work for Hall of Fame trainer Shug McGaughey at the Belmont Park training track (Oct. 20, 4f, :48.34, 1/55), the bay colt comes to Keeneland primed for his debut.

Out of Secret Sigh (Tapit), Stop the Press is a half-brother to Summer Wind Equine's horse-in-training Pippi Longstocking (Frankel {GB}), who debuted a well-beaten sixth over the turf Sept. 16 at the Belmont at the Big A meet.

Second dam MGSW India (Hennessy) is also responsible for Japanese G1 Yasuda Kinen S. and G1 February S. superstar Mozu Ascot (Frankel {GB}). This is an extended female family which includes full-sibs GI Woodward S. hero To Honor and Serve (Bernardini) and GI Chandelier S. heroine Angela Renee, plus their half-brother GISP Elnaawi (Street Sense). Catalog For 100th Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale Now Available

Fasig-Tipton has cataloged 210 selected yearlings for the 100th Saratoga Sale, to be held on Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 9 and 10, in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Sessions will begin each evening at 6:30 p.m. in the Humphrey S. Finney Sales Pavilion.

“We are returning to Saratoga in style this year, as we celebrate the sale of a century, the 100th Saratoga Sale,” said Fasig-Tipton president Boyd Browning. “For 100 years, Saratoga has produced breed-shapers, champions, classic winners, and international stars. This year's catalog is outstanding, offering the type of quality that has drawn buyers to Saratoga in search of the sport's very best for a century.”

Saratoga is the first major North American yearling sale to reach the milestone of 100 renewals. The sale returns this year after being cancelled in 2020 due to COVID-19, the first time the sale had not been held since World War II.

To commemorate the 100th Saratoga Sale, this year's catalog includes a fold out timeline that outlines major events in the sale's history, as well as a gallery of the sale's most prominent graduates through the years.

In statistics recently released by The BloodHorse MarketWatch, Saratoga once again ranks at the top of all major North American yearling sales in numerous performance categories. Most notably, the sale is ranked first by percentage of Grade 1 winners and graded stakes winners produced from yearlings sold.

“Recent graduates like Grade 1 winners Known Agenda, Valiance, and current undefeated 3-year-old colt First Captain are carrying on the century long tradition of Saratoga Sale quality,” continued Browning. “We look forward to welcoming buyers and sellers back to our historic sales grounds this August as we offer the next generation of racing's stars.”

The catalog may now be viewed online, and will also be available in the equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogs are also now available.
