Spinster Winner Valiance to Fasig-Tipton November

Sunday’s GI Juddmonte Spinster S. winner Valiance (Tapit–Last Full Measure, by Empire Maker) will be offered at the Nov. 8 Fasig-Tipton November Sale after an anticipated start in the GI Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff Nov. 7. She will go through the ring as a racing or broodmare prospect consigned by Meg Levy’s Bluewater Sales.

A Todd Pletcher trainee for the partnership of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Martin S. Schwartz, and CHC Inc., Valiance is riding a three-race win streak into the Breeders’ Cup. She came into the Spinster off a score in Monmouth’s Eatontown S. Aug. 29, which had followed an allowance/optional claimer win on the turf at Colonial Downs July 28. She also won the Open Mind S. on the Monmouth turf last year as a 3-year-old. Valiance goes into the Breeders’ Cup with an 8-6-0-0 record and earnings of $469,575.

“It is always exciting to offer fillies in top current form,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “A daughter of Tapit with a fantastic pedigree will be highly desirable to the sport’s leading buyers and owners.”

Valiance is out of the GI Madison S. winner Last Full Measure, who hammered for $1.5 million while in foal to War Front at the 2014 Keeneland November sale. Valiance’s granddam, Lazy Slusan (Slewvescent), was a dual Grade I winner in 2001.

The Spinster winner previously sold for $650,000 as a yearling at the 2017 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale to Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Marty Schwartz.

“She’s been a joy to be associated with, taking us to the top of the mountain,” said Eclipse Thoroughbred’s Aron Wellman. “Valiance is regally bred, a gorgeous physical, and she’s a top-shelf performer on dirt and turf. We are hoping for another positive result in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff and to then showcase her at the historic Newtown Paddocks.”

MGISW She’s a Julie Retired; Headed to Fasig-Tipton November

Winner of the June 13 GI Ogden Phipps S., She’s a Julie (Elusive Quality–Kydd Gloves, by Dubai Millennium) has been retired from racing and will be offered as a broodmare prospect at the Nov. 8 Fasig-Tipton November Sale. Denali Stud will consign her for the partnership of Bradley Thoroughbreds, Tim and Anna Cambron, Denali Stud, Rigney Racing, and Madaket Stables.

In addition to her win in the Ogden Phipps this year as a 5-year-old, She’s a Julie also captured the GI La Troienne S. last year and three other graded stakes during her career in addition to placings in both the GI Alabama S. and the GI Personal Ensign S. After four years of campaigning, she retires with a record of 21-7-2-4 and earnings of $1,196,380.

“Her talent was obvious with two Grade I wins on top of her other graded stakes wins and Grade I placings,” said Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. “She was the real deal on the racetrack, but you have got to see her in person to understand what a beautiful mare she is. Named after my wife, she is so very special to me and my family. It is really hard for me to let this one go.”

She’s a Julie’s dam is a half-sister to Untouched Talent (Storm Cat), who produced GISW and sire Bodemeister (Empire Maker) and sold for $5 million at Fasig-Tipton’s same sale in 2012.

Multiple Grade I Winner Bast to Be Offered at Fasig-Tipton November

Three-time Grade I winner Bast (Uncle Mo), in foal to Triple Crown winner Justify (Scat Daddy), will be offered at this year’s Fasig-Tipton November Sale through Hill ‘n’ Dale Sales Agency, who will consign the 3-year-old bay on behalf of owner Charles Chu’s Baoma Corporation.

The only three-time Grade I winning filly of her crop in the U.S., she is also the only Grade I-winning juvenile filly of that crop to add a graded stakes victory at three. Trained throughout her career by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, she established herself as the West Coast’s leading 2-year-old filly in 2019 with a powerful 8 3/4-length victory in the GI Del Mar Debutante and a wire-to-wire score in the GI Chandelier S. She was then third after setting swift fractions over a tiring Santa Anita racetrack in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

Bast would conclude her two-year-old campaign with a victory in the GI Starlet S. at Los Alamitos, going gate to wire over off going. She then kicked off her sophomore campaign with another triumph in the seven-furlong GII Santa Ynez S. in January at Santa Anita. She retired with a record of 6-4-1-1 and $852,200 in earnings.

“Bast’s tremendous ability and gorgeous looks should make her an outstanding broodmare,” said Baffert. “I have only seen five yearling fillies at the sales that were a ‘must buy’ in my life, and she is one them. She is that beautiful.”

Bast was purchased by Baffert and agent Donato Lanni on behalf of Baoma Corporation for $500,000 at Fasig-Tipton’s 2018 Saratoga Selected Yearling Sale.

“Bast was a fantastic racemare,” said John Sikura of consignor Hill ‘n’ Dale. “Selected and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, in foal to Triple crown winner Justify, and by leading sire Uncle Mo. She is without fault and has everything a breeder desires–class, performance, and pedigree at the highest levels.”

Added Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning: “Bast is another tremendous racehorse campaigned by Charles and Susan Chu. Her brilliance on the racetrack and impeccable pedigree make her a broodmare with unlimited potential.”

The dark bay, produced by of a stakes-placed half-sister to MSW & MGSP Afleet Deceit (Northern Afleet), was bought back for $180K out of the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, was RNAd for $127K at FTKOCT a handful of weeks later and was acquired by owner Kenji Ryotokuji for $375K at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale. Indy) may have struggled with a rain-affected turf when a midfield seventh on Tokyo debut going a mile June 28, but the $675,000 KEESEP graduate improved to be second to the record-setting Wonderful Town (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) on a sounder surface over nine furlongs at Niigata July 25. Grade I winner Love and Pride, who was acquired by Three Chimneys for $4.9 million in foal to Distorted Humor at FTKNOV in 2013, is the dam of the SW Princesinha Julia (Pioneerof the Nile) and a now-yearling Gun Runner filly that made $750K to top the weanling offerings at FTKNOV last fall. LADY MERCY (f, 2, American Pharoah–Two Oceans, by Cape Town) is the second foal to the races for her dam, a daughter of MSW & GSP Ocean Cat, and carries the latter’s sire Storm Cat 4×3 the same as American Pharoah’s recent G2 Park Hill S. winner Pista and SW & GSP Ocean Atlantique. This sire’s dual U.S. graded winner Sweet Melania has Storm Cat 4×4. The homebred descends from the female family of Japanese Horses of the Year Narita Brian (Jpn) (Brian’s Time) and Biwa Hayahide (Jpn) (Sharrood) and successful young stallion Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
