Fasig-Tipton Announces COVID-19 Safety Protocols for Kentucky October Yearling Sale & November Sale

In advance of the upcoming Kentucky October Yearling Sale and The November Sale in Lexington, KY, Fasig-Tipton has announced the following COVID-19 protocols will be in place in accordance with Kentucky regulations:

-Screening measures, including temperature checks and health screening questions, will be in place to gain admittance to the sales grounds for all staff, participants and attendees;
-Cloth face coverings are required in accordance with U.S. CDC recommendations;
-Participants will not be allowed to congregate. At least six feet of distance must be maintained between people;
-Limited seating capacity in the sales pavilion;
-Walk up food service only will be available on the sales grounds;
-Valet parking will not be available;
-Increased cleaning and disinfection procedures will be implemented with regular sanitation of high touch surfaces at least every two hours;
-Frequent hand washing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is recommended for all attendees;
The health and safety of sale participants is of paramount importance. These guidelines are intended as a supplement to assist with safe operations during the COVID-19 pandemic and are subject to change.

The Kentucky October Yearling Sale will be held on Monday through Thursday, Oct. 26-29, in Lexington, KY. The November Sale will be held Sunday, Nov. 8 in Lexington, KY.

Bast the Highest of Highs for Baoma Corp

Only a few years after first becoming involved in Thoroughbred ownership, Susan and Charles Chu watched their first Grade I winner also become a Breeders’ Cup Champion when ‘TDN Rising Star‘ Drefong (Gio Ponti) crossed the wire first in the 2016 Breeders’ Cup Sprint under their Baoma Corporation banner.

While they’d had several graded stakes contenders come along prior to Drefong’s campaign, after the millionaire took his third Grade I in the Forego S. for Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert in 2017, Baoma Corporation went through a bit of a dry spell as they searched for their next big winner.

“[Susan] was getting to the point where we would lose a big race, and she’d get really down,” Baffert said. “I would say, ‘You know, you have to get through this. This is what it is.’ She had been kind of spoiled when she started winning right away.”

Then the next summer in Saratoga, Baffert got word from agent Donato Lanni on a yearling at the Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Select Yearling Sale that could be worth a look.

“When we got up there, Donato Lanni said, ‘There’s a filly here that you are going to love,'” Baffert recalled. “So we went back there and sure enough, she was a no-brainer. Susan was there and we told her we found a really good filly and she said, ‘Please don’t look at it too much. We don’t want people to know you like it.'”

The Uncle Mo filly was the first foal out of the Arch mare Laffina, who hailed from the family of Grade I performers Fault (Blame) and Mananan McLir (Royal Academy). The youngster was purchased by Baoma Corp for $500,000 and was later named Bast.

“I actually thought she was going to bring a lot more,” Baffert said. “She looked like one of the best fillies there. I happened to see a picture of her going through the ring and you could tell she was like the perfect image of what you want a racehorse to look like. She was just a standout from day one.”

After running second in her first start, Bast ran back in the GI Del Mar Debutante S. a few weeks later, soundly defeating the filly who had beaten her on debut and winning by almost nine lengths. She then made the quick trip north to Santa Anita in September to claim a second Grade I in the Chandelier S.

Considered one of the top choices going into the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies at Santa Anita last year, the bay went to the head of the field early, and after getting caught in a speed dual with longshot Two Sixty (Uncaptured), she ended up placing third.

The juvenile filly bounced back soon enough by sneaking in another win at two in the GI Starlet S., defeating Juvenile Fillies runner-up and ‘TDN Rising Star’ Donna Veloce (Uncle Mo) and becoming the only horse of her foal crop to win three Grade I races as a juvenile.

A few days after the calendar turned to 2020, Bast made her sophomore debut a winning one in the GII Santa Ynez S.

It was announced the next month that a minor injury would force the filly to retire.

“She came up with a small issue on her hind end and she was going to need 90 days off,” Baffert said.

The team of Baffert, Susan Chu, and John Sikura of Hill ‘n’ Dale put their heads together to decide the best route for the new broodmare prospect.

“Susan loves to race,” Sikura said. “Before she sells the mares, she covers them to the best stallion possible. We try to create the most value in the fact that she’s in foal. She’s not just a prospect, she’s ready to be a producer.”

It was decided to send the daughter of Uncle Mo to fellow Baffert trainee and Triple Crown hero Justify (Scat Daddy).

“We all talked about it and I just really thought with Justify…I mean she’s picture perfect and he’s picture perfect,”Baffert said “It’s going to be a home run.'”

Sikura added, “I think you have the best of both worlds. You have the precocity and brilliant 2-year-old speed of Bast, and then in Justify you have a Classic-distance horse with precocity, speed and brilliance.”

The Chus will part ways with their three-time Grade I winner this November as Bast is offered as Hip 245 through the Hill ‘n’ Dale consignment at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale.

Baffert said he is anticipating that Bast will be a hit at the ‘Night of Stars,’ where her dam Laffina sold for $1.5 million in foal to Ghostzapper last year.

“Certain horses, when you pull them out of the stall, [people say], ‘Wow, she looks expensive.’ And those are the kind of mares that people are going for because you know they’re going to throw a beautiful foal. Those mares are priceless to come by.”

“Bast has been a Fasig-Tipton favorite for a long time,” said Fasig-Tipton’s Boyd Browning. “Since we saw her on the Saratoga sales grounds, she had that wow factor as a yearling. I think the greatest compliment I’ve ever heard about Bast was that Bob Baffert said she was one of the top five fillies he’s ever seen at a yearling sale.”

He added of the foal she is carrying, “The foal really represents a brilliance of one of the finest 2-year-olds in the country coupled with the dominance of an undefeated Triple Crown winner in Justify. It’s just a remarkable opportunity, and then you keep in mind how young the mare is and just how many opportunities you’ll have to see sons or daughters out of Bast. That gets you really excited.”

“You couldn’t ask for anything more,” Sikura said. “I think every category that a high-end seeker of quality bloodstock would look for, Bast has all of those criterion met. If she were human, she would be driven to school in a limousine and would have gone to private school. She’s the best of the best of the best. We’re excited and proud to represent Susan Chu and we’re looking forward to her not only succeeding in the sales ring, but more importantly to succeeding as a broodmare with whoever is lucky enough to acquire such a fine prospect.”

Fasig-Tipton Releases First Group of November Supplemental Entries

Fasig-Tipton has released the first group of supplemental entries to its 2020 November Sale, which are catalogued as hips 265- 279. Highlights include:

Fancier (Hip 267): Dam of Get Her Number (Dialed In), recent winner of the GI American Pharoah S. at Santa Anita Sept. 26. Get Her Number will make his next anticipated start in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Consigned by Vinery Sales, agent.
Synchrony (Hip 268): A stakes performer on both dirt and turf, the son of three-time leading sire Tapit is a six-time graded stakes winner of $956,652. From a prolific Pin Oak family, he is a half-brother to two stakes winners, including GSW Chocolate Kisses (Candy Ride {Arg}). Consigned as a stallion prospect by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
Indelible (Hip 269): Daughter of Tiznow is a half-sister to Essential Quality (Tapit), recent winner of GI Claiborne Breeders’ Futurity. who is the early second favorite for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile. Indelible is out of a graded stakes-placed half-sister to champion Folklore (Tiznow), who is in turn the granddam of undefeated Japanese Champion Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Indelible’s weanling filly, by Bernardini, will sell after her as Hip 270. Both are consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
She’s a Truckin (Hip 271): Daughter of Lemon Drop Kid is a half-sister to graded stakes winner Sheza Smoke Show (Wilko), who is turn the dam of undefeated MGISW 2-year-old filly Princess Noor (Not This Time), expected to be one of the favorites for the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Consigned as a broodmare prospect by Pope McLean (Crestwood Farm), agent.
Miss Besilu (Hip 273): Regally bred 9-year-old daughter of Medaglia d’Oro is a half-sister to Horse of the Year Saint Liam (Saint Ballado), as well as to Grade II winner Quiet Giant (Giant’s Causeway), who is in turn the dam of another Horse of the Year in Gun Runner (Candy Ride {Arg}). She is offered in foal to leading sire Into Mischief and her weanling colt, also by Into Mischief, will be offered before her as Hip 272. Both are consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent.
Anabaa’s Creation (Ire) (Hip 277): A stakes winner and Grade I-placed on two continents, the daughter of Anabaa is also a half-sister to the dam of recent G1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe winner Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}), as well as Eclipse Champion Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). Offered in foal to Breeders’ Cup Champion Mendelssohn, she is consigned by Lane’s End, agent.
Inthemidstofbiz (Hip 279): Four-year-old filly by Fed Biz has won three consecutive races, including a three-length victory in the GII Thoroughbred Club of America S. Oct. 3 at Keeneland, which punched her ticket to the GI Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint. Consigned as racing/broodmare prospect by Buckland Sales (Zach Madden), agent.

Fasig-Tipton will continue to accept approved November Sale supplemental entries through the Breeders’ Cup.

The November Sale will be held Sunday, Nov. 8, in Lexington, Kentucky. The sale will begin at 2 pm.

She’s a Julie One to Remember for Bradley and Partners

Peter Bradley has hand picked a number of yearlings that have gone on to become top-class runners–from GISW and now-sire Klimt (Quality Road) to Eclipse Champion Lady Eli (Divine Park). And while he can distinctly recall the days when he purchased those eventual headliners, so too can he remember the yearlings that he passed on who would go on to do big things.

Bradley first saw She’s a Julie (Elusive Quality) at the 2016 Keeneland September Sale, and while impressed with her physical, a simple vet issue kept him from bidding. She was purchased by Steve Asmussen as agent for Carol Castille’s Whispering Oaks.

“I think the score is Julie one million and veterinarians zero on this one,” Bradley quipped. “Steve was smart enough to buy her as a yearling. She was beautiful; I absolutely loved her. She had size, balance and a beautiful head on her.”

Bradley watched from the sidelines as ‘Julie’ won on debut as a juvenile and claimed the GIII Iowa Oaks that next summer. Soon after, the opportunity arose for him to buy back in on the filly. He jumped at the chance.

Other partners would eventually get in on the ownership, including Tim and Anna Cambron, Denali Stud, Rigney Racing and Madaket Stables.

After that first graded stakes victory in 2018, She’s Julie came back with a runner-up effort in the GI Alabama S. followed by a win in the GIII Remington Park Oaks.

A favorite in the Asmussen barn for her bright personality and namesake Julie Asmussen, She’s a Julie claimed consecutive graded stakes wins in her first two starts as a 4-year-old, including her first Grade I.

“There are two races I remember the most in Julie’s career,” Bradley said. “In the GIII Bayakoa at Oaklawn Park, she was much the best that day and came out of that race as good as a horse could come out. She was on her toes and in her feed tub, and we had high hopes coming into the GI La Troienne on Oaks Day. And she just did it. She ran her race. She came running from the three-eighths pole and got up in a great, gut-wrenching finish.”

Co-owner Tim Cambron echoed Bradley’s sentiments on the monumental day.

“The highlight of her career in my opinion was on Oaks Day when she ran on the undercard in a Grade I and won,” he said.”Being in the Champagne Room just before they presented the trophy for the Oaks was quite a treat.”

She’s a Julie got her second Grade I win this summer at Belmont in the GI Odgen Phipps S.

“She was genuine all the time, but the race she put in for the Ogden Phipps was her quintessential race,” Bradley said. “She had a lot to do coming down the stretch. Ricardo Santana fit her like a glove. He asked her for everything she had and she gave it to him. She was remarkable. She refused to lose that day.”

She’s a Julie retired this fall after a four-year campaign as a millionaire with five graded stakes wins on her resume. She ran in the money in over half of her starts, including four Grade I contests.

“It’s been a lot of fun to go to various tracks and watch her run,” Cambron said. “She always was in the game. You didn’t know if you were going to win, but you knew you were going to be there at the end. But most of the time she won.”

Bradley added, “The thing about Julie was her consistency. She absolutely laid it on the line every time she ran. Her first Grade I on Oaks Day last year was something special, but the fact that she came back and won a Grade I this year was just icing on the cake.”

She’s a Julie will be offered as Hip 208 at the Fasig-Tipton November Sale on Nov. 8 with the Denali Stud consignment.

“People are going to say, ‘wow’ when they come see She’s a Julie,” said Fasig-Tipton’s Boyd Browning. “She’s just an awesome physical. When they lead her out, people are just going to kind of smile and grin and say, ‘that’s almost like the perfect conformation that you would design for a racehorse or for a broodmare. She’s got great balance. She’s got great presence. She’s just one of those wow physical horses that will have everyone’s eye.”

Bradley added that the 5-year-old’s pedigree will be another attractive feature for buyers.

“Not only does she have the looks, but she’s got the pedigree. Uniquely, she is one of some 35 fillies out of a Dubai Millennium mare, and her dam is a half-sister to the dam of [GISW and sire] Bodemeister (Empire Maker). The family is just deep with racing quality.”

“I think it’s a great package being by Elusive Quality, who’s emerging as a broodmare sire,” Browning said. “He demonstrated ability on a racetrack with his speed, and his progeny are demonstrating the ability to carry speed over distance. She’s a Julie has been a top-class performer for several years now. She’s certainly demonstrated her talent and her ability in the right places when the world was watching. She’s been a pleasure to watch on the racetrack and it’s a great opportunity for someone to add her to their broodmare band.”
