Bernardini Colt Zips Furlong Bullet in Timonium

TIMONIUM, MD – Just minutes into the second day of the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale under-tack show, a colt by Bernardini (hip 385) zipped the week's fastest furlong work of :9 4/5 Wednesday in Timonium. It was the first time since 2012 that a juvenile had shaded :10 at the Maryland State Fairgrounds oval. The dark bay colt is consigned to the Midlantic sale by Becky Thomas's Sequel Bloodstock on behalf of breeders Chester and Mary Broman.

“The expectations were pretty high,” said Sequel's Carlos Manresa. “Like most of Mr. Broman's horses, they are bred to go fast. And he did just that. We didn't know that he was going to go quite that fast. We hadn't asked him to go that fast, but we knew that he would be a standout performer.”

The colt is out of G Note (Medaglia d'Oro), a daughter of graded stakes winner Seeking the Ante (Seeking the Gold) and a half to stakes winner Mineralogist (Mineshaft), as well as stakes-placed Risk a Chance (A.P. Indy), who is the dam of this year's GII Rebel S. winner Un Ojo (Laoban).

Thomas's association with the Bromans' families goes back generations.

“We have three relatives of that family,” Thomas said. “The mother of Un Ojo was Mr. Broman's and we sold her to another partner of ours. And now, in Mr. Broman's breeding band, we have the aunts, Mineralogist and Ante Up My Friend (Friend or Foe), and we have G Note. We have many members and we breed them all really well. So one of them will fill in that gap up there.”

The Munoz family's CM Thoroughbreds is making its debut at the Timonium auction with a three-horse consignment this year and one of the trio, a colt by American Freedom (hip 236), turned in Wednesday's fastest quarter-mile work of :21 2/5. Anna and Adela Munoz purchased the dark bay, who is out of Bringingdown Babel (Roman Ruler), for $12,000 at last year's OBS October sale.

“We liked the way he looked, he had a big body on him,” said Damian Munoz, who is overseeing the consignment on behalf of his father, Carlos. “We tried to enter him at the OBS sale in April, but they had so many horses, so we decided to come here for the first time. This is our first time trying Timonium and so far, I am loving it here. I love the weather.”

Of Wednesday's bullet work, Munoz said, “I was expecting a fast breeze out of him, but not as fast as he did it. He got sick before he shipped over here, so he missed out on two workouts. So we had to get him sharp over here with two breezes and he wasn't breezing like what he did today. So I was a little surprised today.”

The Munozes, who generally race at Tampa Bay Downs, expanded their pinhooking venture this year and have been pleased with the results.

“We have been able to sell just about everything and make a profit out of it, so we've been doing pretty good,” Munoz said of the family's 2022 results.

CM Thoroughbreds had its first consignment at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale earlier in the year and will offer nine juveniles at the upcoming OBS June sale.

“It's all a family thing, with me, my mom and my dad,” Munoz explained.

The under-tack show concludes with a final session beginning at 8 a.m. Thursday. The auction will be held next Monday and Tuesday with bidding commencing each day at 11 a.m.

Five Share Furlong Bullet at Fasig-Tipton Midlantic Tuesday

TIMONIUM, MD – The three-day under-tack show for the Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale began shortly after 8 a.m. Tuesday morning under cloudless blue skies and temperatures hovering around 60 degrees and by the conclusion of the day's seventh and final set shortly before 3 p.m., with temperatures approaching 80 degrees, five horses had turned in the co-fastest furlong time of :10 flat. A filly by Collected had the day's fastest quarter-mile work of :21 1/5.

A filly by Nyquist (hip 150) was the first to hit the :10 flat mark while working during the second set for consignor Randy Miles. The chestnut is out of Westside Tapstress (Lookin at Lucky), a half-sister to graded stakes winner Discreet Hero (Honour and Glory).

“We knew she could do it, but your nerves take over as you're leading her up there, hoping that nothing happens,” Miles said after the work. “She performed the way she was supposed to and I'm glad she represented herself well.”

Miles is consigning the filly on behalf of her breeders, Todd and Chad Frederick and Carl Thomas Potter.

“We've had some horses for them in the past and they entrusted us with two really nice horses this year,” Miles said of the breeders. “The first one sold well in April and this is the second one.”

Miles admitted he is a big fan of the Midlantic May sale.

“We love this track and when you get a week like this of great weather, it's so fun to come here,” he said. “This filly got over the track great all week and she loved the weather, the low humidity and cool weather. When Mother Nature cooperates, it's a wonderful place.”

Miles sent out four horses to work throughout Tuesday's session and said he had found the track to be consistent from start to finish.

“The track was beautiful,” he said. “They did a great job with the 25 horses and then a break. They kept it so consistent. It doesn't matter whether you go early or late.”

Juveniles from the first crop of Bolt d'Oro have been in demand at the auctions all spring and a son of the Spendthrift stallion (hip 30) was the second to work in :10 flat during the session's fourth set. Consigned by Pike Racing, the bay is out of stakes-placed Shine Softly (Aldebaran), a daughter of champion Soaring Softly (Kris S.) and also the dam of stakes winner The Grass is Blue (Broken Vow). Al Pike purchased the youngster from Peter O'Callaghan's Woods Edge Farm for $90,000 at last year's Keeneland September sale. O'Callaghan had acquired the colt for $65,000 at the 2020 Fasig-Tipton November sale.

“He was beautiful,” Pike recalled of the colt as a yearling. “He was in Book 2 with Woods Edge and he was a little immature at the time, because he's young, and Peter had a stunning group of Book 2 horses. So I think he got a little bit overlooked. I was very fortunate to get him. We've liked him all winter. He's done nothing wrong. We came here thinking he was capable and hoping that he would perform and we were pleased with him.”

Pike's consignment topped the 2020 Midlantic sale with a $1.1-million son of Uncle Mo.

“This is one of our favorite spots,” Pike said of the Maryland auction. “We always try to bring a good horse here because you'll get rewarded.”

Grassroots Training and Sales sent out a filly by Neolithic (hip 9) to work one of three :10 flat works during the day's fifth set. Out of multiple stakes placed Sarahline (Northern Afleet), the chestnut was purchased for $8,500 at last year's OBS Winter sale.

Hip 20, a son of More Than Ready, turned in his :10 flat work for Keiber Rengifo's Golden Rock Thoroughbreds. A $12,000 Keeneland September purchase by Jose Silva, the bay is out of Seeking Sheba (Seeking the Gold) and from the family of champion Perfect Soul (Ire).

Completing the :10 flat works was hip 36, a New York-bred gelding by Practical Joke consigned by Scanlon Training and Sales. The bay is out of the unraced Silken Lily (Grand Slam), a half-sister to multiple graded-stakes winning sire Upstart (Flatter). He sold for $30,000 at the Fasig-Tipton New York-bred Yearling sale last August.

“He is a horse we took a little bit of time with,” Dave Scanlon said. “I don't know that they announced it during the breeze, but he is a gelding now. We bought him privately after the New York sale and he always looked fast. He had a great hip and body, but he was just a little bit tough through the breaking. So around December, we just decided, let's make life easier on me and you and everybody else. So he became a gelding. And then we took our time with him. He's always had a great hip, he just needed to level out. My assistant and I were just talking about how he is just looking better and better. Every work, he's just been getting better.”

The Scanlon team comes into the Midlantic sale off a strong OBS Spring sale, which included a $1.3-million Mendelssohn colt.

“It's been great,” Scanlon said of his 2021 results so far. “We've had a really good year. We were pretty excited last year when we bought these horses. We thought we had done a good job picking them out and it's been a great group all year. We were excited for OBS, but we've been excited about coming here. I love to bring my New York-breds here. Horses that we find quick and precocious–horses like Army Mule–we've always done really well with here.”

A filly by Collected (hip 202), the first horse to work during the second set, turned in the fastest quarter-mile work of :21 1/5 for Jesse Hoppel's Coastal Equine. Out of Aurore (Arch), the dark bay is a half to stakes-placed Orageuse (Broken Vow) and Boreale (Makfi). Her dam is a half-sister to multiple graded stakes winner Interactif (Broken Vow). She was purchased by Larry Zap, Hoppel and Amanda Murphy for $47,000 at last year's Fasig-Tipton October sale.

The Midlantic under-tack show continues through Thursday with sessions beginning daily at 8 a.m. at the Maryland State Fairgrounds in Timonium. The auction will be held next Monday and Tuesday with bidding commencing both days at 11 a.m.

Second Chances: Quality Road Midlantic Topper ‘Could Be Real Deal’

In this continuing series, TDN's Senior Editor Steve Sherack catches up with the connections of promising maidens to keep on your radar.

After getting checked sharply in the early stages of his belated unveiling at Fair Grounds last weekend, $1.5-million Fasig-Tipton Midlantic topper Vinco (c, 3, Quality Road–Stormy Welcome, by Storm Cat) produced a serious rally from last to finish a strong second Jan. 22 (video).

Off at a well-supported 7-2 sporting a 13-strong worktab for the patient Dallas Stewart barn dating back to late October, the West Point Thoroughbreds and Gervais Racing, LLC colorbearer was away in good order from his rail draw, but after taking a bump from a rival approaching the five-eighths marker and subsequently steadying beneath Brian Hernandez, Jr., dropped back abruptly to caboose the field of nine through an opening quarter in :22.15.

Finally re-emerging in the picture while still trailing by plenty as they straightened, Vinco began to roll in the stretch, impressively threading his way through the pack to come home in a field-best :12.65 and finish 2 3/4 lengths adrift fellow firster Ferociously (Violence). Vinco earned a 59 Beyer Speed Figure in the six-furlong affair.

“It was a situation where I'm glad he didn't get hurt,” Stewart said. “One horse hit another horse and that horse hit us, and knocked us up against the rail and we had to check out of there. It's just one of them things, but he came back running. He ran a big race just like we thought he would. I think he would've won easy if it didn't happen, but that's neither here nor there.

Looking ahead, Stewart added, “We're gonna stretch out probably for his next start. If you watch the replay, he galloped out with the winner. We'll see how he trains first and see how it goes. If everything goes good, we'll come back on [GII] Risen Star day [Feb. 19]. If he needs more time, I'll give him more time. We took a lot of time with him coming out of the sale. We think he's a really nice horse. Like I was telling [West Point's] Terry Finley, let's make a career of it. He could be the real deal.”

Vinco topped last year's Fasig-Tipton Midlantic sale after breezing an eighth in a powerful :10 from the Eddie Woods consignment on behalf of breeder Jon Clay's Alpha Delta. His third dam is bluehen mare Weekend Surprise (Secretariat), who, of course, produced the breed-shaping sire and Horse of the Year A.P. Indy.

Alpha Delta purchased Vinco's dam Stormy Welcome (Storm Cat) for $600,000 at the 2015 KEENOV sale. The unraced daughter of Welcome Surprise (Seeking the Gold) was previously a $1.6 million KEESEP yearling.

The Quality Road over Storm Cat cross is also responsible for three-time graded winner and young sire Blofeld. Vinco is bred similarly to Quality Road's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf winner Hootenanny; MGSW & MGISP Dr Post; and GSW & GISP Great Stuff, who were all produced by daughters of Storm Cat's Hennessy.

Previous standouts featured in 'Second Chances' include: two-time Breeders' Cup winner Golden Pal (Uncle Mo), GI Runhappy Santa Anita Derby winner and Lane's End stallion Honor A. P. (Honor Code), MGISW and 'TDN Rising Star' Paradise Woods (Union Rags), GIII Las Virgenes S. heroine Moonlight d'Oro (Medaglia d'Oro), GII Los Alamitos Futurity winner and MGISP Spielberg (Union Rags), GSW Backyard Heaven (Tizway), MSW and 'TDN Rising Star' Gidu (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), GI Frizette S. third-place finisher A Mo Reay (Uncle Mo) and Discovery S. runner-up Speaker's Corner (Street Sense).

Sales-Topping Uncle Mo Colt Makes Successful Debut

4th-Santa Anita, $68,000, Msw, 12-26, 3yo/up, 6 1/2f, 1:16.11, ft, 1/2 length.
SHAAZ (c, 3, Uncle Mo–Miss Ocean City, by Mineshaft), the better fancied of a pair of debuting 3-year-olds for trainer Bob Baffert, overcame his inexperience and overhauled his barnmate Hopkins (Quality Road) in the dying strides to graduate by a half-length Sunday at Santa Anita. The $1.1-million topper from the 2020 Fasig-Tipton Midlantic 2-Year-Olds in Training Sale, Shaaz was not the quickest away and lingered in the latter third of the field as Hopkins set a fast pace over a track that had been yielding slow sectionals in the first few races. Wide on the turn, the Virginia-bred began to find his best stride three furlongs from home and took aim on Hopkins after a half in :45.01. He looked as if he might be able to run up the score in the final eighth of a mile, but he refused to swap his leads, weaving in an out under John Velazquez, before knuckling down in the final 50 yards to prove best as the 1-2 chalk. Q B One (Uncle Mo), the first foal out of multiple champion Beholder (Henny Hughes), finished a one-paced sixth. Shaaz, a $185,000 buyback at the 2019 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga Sale, was knocked down to Donato Lanni, agent for Petersen, for the sales-topping price at Midlantic in 2020 after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. Lanni paid a sales-topping $1.8 million for Gamine (Into Mischief) at FTMMAY in 2019. Shaaz is a half-brother to Azar (Scat Daddy), GSW, $356,558, and a yearling colt by Quality Road.
