Bullet Breezer Leads Big One-Two for Nyquist at Fasig Gulfstream

A Nyquist colt (hip 28) who breezed a bullet furlong in :9 4/5 at Gulfstream Monday was popular as expected in the track's paddock on Wednesday, bringing $2.6 million early in the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale from agent Jamie McCalmont, acting on behalf of Coolmore's M.V. Magnier. Consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables, Inc., the Feb. 4 foal was a $160,000 Fasig-Tipton Select Showcase buy. His third dam is GISW Victory Ride (Seeking the Gold). Coolmore bought the Gulfstream sale's top two lots in 2019, including $3.65-million Cezanne (Curlin).

The next horse through the ring, also a Nyquist colt (hip 29), went for $900,000 to Spendthrift Farm and West Point Thoroughbreds. A :10 2/5 breezer, the $400,000 KEESEP yearling was consigned by Eddie Woods, agent for complete dispersal of the estate of Paul Pompa, Jr.

Fasig-Tipton Catalogues 184 Entries for Gulfstream Sale

Fasig-Tipton has catalogued 184 entries for The Gulfstream Sale of Selected 2-Year-Olds in Training, to be held Wednesday, Mar. 31, in the racetrack's walking ring. The sale will begin at 2 p.m. The under tack show is scheduled for Monday, Mar. 29, beginning at 9 a.m. Fasig-Tipton was forced to cancel last year's Gulfstream Sale due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“We are excited to be returning to Gulfstream Park in March to conduct the nation's premier 2-year-olds in training sale,” said Fasig-Tipton President Boyd Browning. “The Gulfstream Sale annually provides an unrivaled concentration of quality, and this year's catalogue is loaded. In a short period of time, Gulfstream grads have won 13 different Grade I races, including the Kentucky Derby, Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Met Mile, and the Florida Derby twice. If you want to play at the top of the game, this sale–and its dirt racetrack–will get you there.”

The catalogue may now be viewed online and will also be available via the Equineline sales catalogue app. Print catalogues will be available from Fasig-Tipton offices in late February. Fasig-Tipton will also offer a supplemental catalogue once again this year. Supplemental entries will be accepted on an approval basis.

Undefeated Nadal to Stand at Shadai in Japan

‘TDN Rising Star‘ Nadal (Blame–Ascending Angel, by Pulpit), whose four wins from as many trips to the races included the faster of two divisions of the GI Arkansas Derby, will enter stud in 2021 at Shadai Stallion Station in Japan, the organization confirmed in a release Wednesday upon the 3-year-old’s arrival in the country.

Bred in Kentucky by Sierra Farm, Nadal was purchased by Randy Bradshaw, agent, for $65,000 at the 2018 Keeneland September sale and was successfully resold for $700,000 at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale after breezing an eighth of a mile in :10 flat. Kerri Radcliffe signed the ticket on behalf of an ownership group that included George Bolton, Arthur Hoyeau, Barry Lipman and Mark Mathiesen.

Turned over to Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, Nadal easily won his career debut Jan. 19 at Santa Anita, covering 6 1/2 furlongs in 1:15.28 and followed up three weeks later with a 3/4-length success in the GII San Vicente S. over seven panels. The hard-fought winner of the Mar. 14 GII Rebel S. when sent away from California for the first time, the strapping bay turned in his best effort to date when defeating King Guillermo (Uncle Mo) by three lengths in the Arkansas Derby May 2 (video). His final time of 1:48.34 was a full 1.15 seconds faster than that recorded by his ‘Rising Star’ stablemate Charlatan (Speightstown) in the other split of the race. It was announced May 28 that Nadal suffered a condylar fracture and was to be retired.

“He’s going to have a great career at stud,” Bolton told TDN at the time. “He took a second to wind up. Coming out of the gate, he wasn’t a little bottle rocket. Once he got going three or four strides later, he was a :21, :43 horse. That’s what the breeders want.”

Nadal is the last of two foals from his dam, a daughter of Solar Colony (Pleasant Colony), whose full-sister Pleasant Stage was named champion of her generation in 1991 following her victory in the GI Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies. Pleasant Stage was a full-sister to MGSW Stage Colony and GSW Colonial Play, the dam of MGISW Marsh Side (Gone West).

A stud fee will be announced at a later date.

The dark bay, produced by of a stakes-placed half-sister to MSW & MGSP Afleet Deceit (Northern Afleet), was bought back for $180K out of the 2018 Fasig-Tipton Saratoga sale, was RNAd for $127K at FTKOCT a handful of weeks later and was acquired by owner Kenji Ryotokuji for $375K at last year’s Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream sale. Indy) may have struggled with a rain-affected turf when a midfield seventh on Tokyo debut going a mile June 28, but the $675,000 KEESEP graduate improved to be second to the record-setting Wonderful Town (Jpn) (Rulership {Jpn}) on a sounder surface over nine furlongs at Niigata July 25. Grade I winner Love and Pride, who was acquired by Three Chimneys for $4.9 million in foal to Distorted Humor at FTKNOV in 2013, is the dam of the SW Princesinha Julia (Pioneerof the Nile) and a now-yearling Gun Runner filly that made $750K to top the weanling offerings at FTKNOV last fall. LADY MERCY (f, 2, American Pharoah–Two Oceans, by Cape Town) is the second foal to the races for her dam, a daughter of MSW & GSP Ocean Cat, and carries the latter’s sire Storm Cat 4×3 the same as American Pharoah’s recent G2 Park Hill S. winner Pista and SW & GSP Ocean Atlantique. This sire’s dual U.S. graded winner Sweet Melania has Storm Cat 4×4. The homebred descends from the female family of Japanese Horses of the Year Narita Brian (Jpn) (Brian’s Time) and Biwa Hayahide (Jpn) (Sharrood) and successful young stallion Kizuna (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).
