Coolmore Lands $1.1M Justify Colt at Gulfstream

Agent Jamie McCalmont, bidding on behalf of Coolmore's MV Magnier, went to $1.1 million to land a regally bred son of Triple Crown winner Justify Wednesday afternoon at the Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream Sale. Out of GISW juvenile Appealing Zophie (Successful Appeal), hip 84 is half to three stakes horses (and two more producers), including fellow GI Belmont S. winner and freshman sire Tapwrit (Tapit). The Apr. 20 foal was a $290,000 Fasig Saratoga buyback bred by Barronstown Stud. He was consigned by Ciaran Dunne's Wavertree Stables and breezed in :10 flat. McCalmont signed on Magnier's behalf for the $2.6-million Nyquist topper at last year's Gulfstream sale.

In this continuing series, we take a look ahead at US-bred and/or conceived runners entered for the upcoming weekend at the tracks on the Japan Racing Association circuit, with a focus on pedigree and/or performance in the sales ring. Here are the horses of interest for this weekend running at Hanshin and Tokyo Racecourses. Click here for a preview of Sunday's G1 Longines Japan Cup at Tokyo, which has drawn four of the last six winners of the course-and-distance G1 Tokyo Yushun. Last year's Triple Crown hero Contrail (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) will start a warm favorite over this year's Derby winner Shahryar (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}):

The May foal's second dam is a full-sister to Furioso (Jpn) (Brian's Time), a nine-time stakes winner and runner-up in the G1 February S. on the dirt in Japan. B-Winchester Farm (KY)

MGSW and four-time Grade I-placed Amen Hallelujah was purchased by the Courtelis's Town & Country for $950K in foal to Distorted Humor at KEENOV in 2013. The filly's granddam, Tenacious Tina (Benchmark), who is responsible for MGSP Tina Tina (Paddy O'Prado), is a half-sister to young sire and GISW Midnight Storm (Pioneerof the Nile). Pricey Bernardini Debutante Romps in Belmont Graduation

3rd-Belmont, $78,300, Msw, 6-10, 2yo, f, 5 1/2f, 1:06.47, ft,
9 3/4 lengths.
VELVET SISTER (f, 2, Bernardini–Backslash, by Sharp Humor), bought for $500,000 after breezing a :10 1/5 furlong at Fasig-Tipton Gulfstream, debuted a sharp maiden winner Thursday at Belmont for Stonestreet Stables and Steve Asmussen. Showing a quartet of half-mile works at Keeneland, highlighted by a :47 2/5 (5/99) spin from the gate May 8, and a pair of maintenance spins over the local training track, the New York-bred was made a distant 12-5 second choice in a three-horse field behind 1-2 Chad Brown firster Gerrymander (Into Mischief). Out-breaking that rival as remaining foe Amazing Dream (First Samurai) stumbled, the bay dictated terms narrowly while pressed by the favorite through a :22.72 quarter. Gerrymander began to come under more urging nearing the stretch as Joel Rosario sat chilly on the frontrunner, and Velvet Sister shook away outside the furlong grounds, driving clear from there to win wrapped up late by 9 3/4 lengths. Gerrymander, who swapped leads several times in the stretch, was second; Amazing Dream never got involved. The winner is a half-sister to My Boy Tate (Boys At Tosconova), MSW, $584,988. Her dam is responsible for a yearling Frosted filly and foaled a filly by Congrats Apr. 9. Sales History: $165,000 Ylg '20 FTKSEL; $500,000 2yo '21 FTFMAR. Lifetime Record: 1-1-0-0, $49,500.
