New Record for Fasig-Tipton Digital Set at April Sale with $660K Mare

When the dust settled at the close of the Fasig-Tipton April Digital Sale Tuesday evening, the 15-year-old broodmare Eileen's Dream (Bernardini, hip 21) held the new record for a single offering on the digital platform when she sold for $660,000 to DJ Stable. Consigned by Hill 'n' Dale at Xalapa, Eileen's Dream sold with her 2024 colt by Curlin at her side. She was bred back to Charlatan Mar. 27.

The sale closed with 87 horses sold for $4,274,300, an average of $49,130. The clearance rate was 92.5% with 670 registered bidders. A total of 20 horses sold for $50,000 or more.

“We had extremely spirited bidding throughout the sale, especially as it closed this afternoon,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales. “The clearance rate was over 90% again. We're very happy with the results for our buyers and sellers.”

Eileen's Dream has a 2-year-old filly by War Front and a yearling colt by Curlin, who sold for $600,000 at last year's Keeneland November sale to John Stewart and has since been named Stable Boy. She is also the granddam of 2023 GII Saratoga Special S. winner Rhyme Schemes (Ghostzapper). The Fasig-Tipton Digital topper is a half-sister to MGISW Dream Rush (Wild Rush), dam of Broodmare of the Year Dreaming of Julia (A.P. Indy). The latter has produced dual champion Malathaat (Curlin) and GSW Julia Shining.

“Anytime you have the opportunity to secure a nice-looking mare from this family, you have to seriously consider it,” said DJ Stable's Jon Green. “She's got the looks, conformation, female family, broodmare sire, and foal pipeline to be a 'foundation mare' for our program. This is a mare that my dad [Leonard Green] particularly wanted. He loves the family and is excited to have a mare and foal like this.”

Prior to Tuesday's sale, Fasig-Tipton Digital's previous record was held by the broodmare Amazonian (Malibu Moon), who was purchased for $420,000 by KatieRich Farms from the consignment of Ballysax Bloodstock, agent for the Estate of Glen Todd, during the Glen Todd Dispersal Final Phase in September of 2022. The Fasig-Tipton Digital platform launched in March of 2022.

Rounding out the top five sold Tuesday were:

  • Gray Lightning (Social Inclusion, hip 6), a racing/broodmare prospect sold for $370,000 to NRCLUB LLC from the consignment of Full Servis Equine, agent. A lightly raced 3-year-old Pennsylvania-bred, Gray Lightning has a record of two wins and one second from three starts at two and three and earnings of $76,720.
  • Secret Love (Not This Time, hip 22), a broodmare prospect sold for $310,000 to Steven W. Young, agent, from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Secret Love is a stakes winner from her sire's first crop.
  • Charlie's Penny (Race Day, hip 20), a racing/broodmare prospect sold for $260,000 to Steven W. Young, agent, from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent for Lothenbach Stables Complete Dispersal. Minnesota-bred Charlie's Penny is a multiple stakes winner with a record of seven wins, two seconds, and two thirds from 15 career starts and earnings of $413,272 to date.
  • R Calli Kim (Revolutionary, hip 11), a broodmare prospect sold for $220,000 to Resolute Bloodstock from the consignment of Gainesway, agent. A multiple graded stakes winner, R Calli Kim won GIII The Very One S. at Gulfstream Park in her most recent start. She earned $635,640 in her career, with nine wins from 15 starts.

Fasig-Tipton Digital Topper Pounce Does Just That In Herecomesthebride

The top bid during the 2024 Fasig-Tipton February Digital Sale was made by John Stewart's Resolute Bloodstock, who parted with $370,000 for Pounce (Lookin At Lucky), a maiden winner at first asking for Quintessential Racing Florida LLC and Hat Creek Racing and this trainer on the dirt at Churchill Nov. 19, an even sixth from a difficult high draw in a one-mile allowance over the Turfway synthetic Dec. 13 and the front-running winner of her turf debut from an equally awkward draw Feb. 11. Returning just 11 days after changing hands digitally Feb. 11, the bay validated the outlay with a late-on-the-scene victory in the GIII Herecomesthebride S.

With no luck at the draw yet again, Pounce was wisely taken hold of by Javier Castellano and angled over to the inside to caboose the field–led by Mystic Lake (Mo Town)–into the first turn. Content to trail down the back, Pounce was quietly ridden through the middle furlongs as market leaders Life's an Audible (Audible) and Ozara (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) raced handier to the speed.

Pounce began to thread the needle three furlongs out, splitting horses on a couple of occasions before angling out for the drive under a full head of steam. Life's an Audible also kicked nicely as Ozara failed to go on, but Pounce sprinted slightly the better of the two and was home narrowly best.

“Last time she broke good and I sent her to the lead, wire-to- wire,” Castellano said. “It was a different ballgame today the way I handicapped the race. I was way outside with a lot of speed in the race. My goal was to save ground on the first turn but he didn't break good out of the gate and I used my best judgment to drop in and save all the ground I could on the first turn because in my mind I'd have to lose ground turning for home. It was a beautiful trip. [Life's an Audible] came out a little bit and my horse hesitated a little bit to go past, but I encouraged her and she responded really well.”

Pedigree Notes:

Pounce is the first foal and only starter for her winning dam, a $170,000 OBS April breezer, who was purchased by Joshua Deets for $37,000 with this filly in utero at the 2020 Keeneland November Sale.

A half-sister to a pair of black-type performers, including GIII Providencia S. third Gold Dragon Queen (Goldencents), Bouncy produced a filly by Hard Spun Feb. 25.

Pounce is the 50th worldwide graded/group winner for Lookin At Lucky and his 76th black-type winner overall. She is a sixth stakes winner and second graded winner out of a mare by Twirling Candy.

Bidding Open For Fasig-Tipton Digital February Sale

Edited Press Release

Fasig-Tipton has catalogued 139 entries for its February Digital Sale, including phase one of the Ruis Racing LLC Dispersal. Entries may be viewed here and bidding is open now through Tuesday, Feb. 20, beginning at 2 PM ET.

“Fasig-Tipton Digital continues to gather momentum and traction with buyers and sellers, evidenced by the size and quality of this February Digital Sale catalogue,” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton Director of Digital Sales.

The catalogue includes horses of racing, breeding stock, a 2-year-old, and 22 yearlings.

Offerings include several recent winning and stakes-winning horses of racing age, a group of graded-stakes performing broodmare prospects and a current graded stakes producer in the dam of GIII Sam F. Davis winner No More Time (Not This Time).

Covering sires include Army Mule, Epicenter, Essential Quality, Flameaway, Golden Pal, Mitole, and Not This Time.

Also featured in the catalogue are breeding stock and yearlings from Phase One of the Dispersal of Ruis Racing LLC, which are consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency. The Ruis Racing LLC entries consist of breeding stock and yearlings and all are selling without reserve.

The dispersal features several mares in foal to Bolt d'Oro, as well as Hard Spun, Lexitonian, and Mystic Guide. Sires of broodmares and broodmare prospects include Bolt d'Oro, Elusive Quality, Harlan's Holiday, Into Mischief, and Kingman (GB).

“Phase One of the Ruis Racing LLC Dispersal adds significant interest to this catalogue,” added Aaron.  “His program is truly unique in that it is a family operation that bred and trained their own horses and has had tremendous results doing so. Horses were raised and developed with one goal–to win the sport's biggest races.”

Phase Two of Ruis Racing LLC's Dispersal will be conducted in Fasig-Tipton's April Digital Sale, and includes horses of racing age, two-year-olds, and additional yearlings.

Minnesota Ready Tops Lothenbach Dispersal on Fasig-Tipton Digital

The Lothenbach dispersal of Horses of Racing Age on Fasig-Tipton Digital, run Jan. 29 to Feb. 2, closed with 66 horses selling for $4,840,000 with MSP Minnesota Ready (More Than Ready) leading all lots at a final price of $380,000, changing hands to Richard Colton Jr..

The first in the digital ring, Minnesota Ready was most recently seen Jan. 20 in the Duncan F. Kenner S. at the Fair Grounds, where he again ran third in a blanket finish with SW Sosua Summer (Summer Front) and MSW & MGSP Just Might (Justin Phillip) and wrapping his 2023 season before that Dec. 23 in the Richard R. Scherer Memorial S. behind those familiar foes.

The four others who went beyond the $300,000 mark include Dazzlin Dictator (American Pharoah), a two-time winner at Turfway Park, who went to Rodolphe Brisset, agent for Ann Harrison; Tickle Me Unclemo (Uncle Mo), a $350,000 KEESEP yearling, went to Robert Salome for $320,000; and Practically Dark (Practical Joke), recently second in a maiden special at the Fair Grounds, sold to C2 Racing Stable for $310,000.

Most notable of that group is GSW & GISP Happy American (Runhappy), who went as a racing prospect and sold to trainer Neil Pessin for $340,000. A frequent face in the graded ranks across the country, he won the GIII Louisiana S. in 2023 and ran third that summer in the GIII Blame and GI Stephen Foster S.. After uninspiring finishes in the a pair of graded efforts in Kentucky, he returned to the Big Easy and hit the board in the Tenacious S. to cap his season. He'd made his 2024 bow in the GIII Louisiana S. Jan. 20, finishing third in his title defense attempt.

In addition to the $4.84-million aggregate, the average was $73,333 while the median was $41,000 with 16 horses selling for $100,000 or more with Taylor Made Sales consigning. A total of 741 potential buyers from 46 states and seven countries registered to bid, placing a total of 3,047, and averaging 46 bids per offering.

“All I can say is, 'Wow,'” said Leif Aaron, Fasig-Tipton's Director of Digital Sales. “We have to thank the estate of Mr. Lothenbach for trusting us with this dispersal of racing stock. This is exactly what the digital platform was built for: horses and buyers from all over the country. These are phenomenal results.”

The dispersal of Lothenbach's breeding stock and yearlings will come during the Kentucky Winter Mix sale Feb. 5 to Feb. 6 with the catalogue available online.

Full results for the Lothenbach dispersal are available here.
