Kentucky Downs Turf Pick of the Day for Sept. 9

Steve Sherack and Brian DiDonato give their best bet for each day of racing during the FanDuel Meet at Kentucky Downs. $100 Win/Place format; highest bankroll at the end wins.

Steve Sherack: Tuesday's Results – Reward Night was sixth.

Race 9 – Bargain $17k KEENOV graduate Red Danger should offer solid value off a good-looking maiden win at second asking in his turf debut at Saratoga Aug. 11. The chestnut overcame some early trouble checking in traffic shortly after the start, made a strong, three/four-wide move on the far turn and put the race to bed nicely when challenged by the runner-up in deep stretch. He shows a four-furlong breeze in :48 3/5 (10/51) around the dogs over the Oklahoma turf Aug. 29 and trainer Brian Lynch has enjoyed a nice run of late, including a winner at this meet Sept. 6. Selection: #5 Red Danger (6-1).

Brian DiDonato: Tuesday's Results – Bugle of War finished ninth.

Race 7 – Most of this field seem like typical turf sprinters who want to go shorter than this 6 1/2-furlong trip. Jungle Juice (Ire) is proven over this course, however, having finished second over it for $20K last September and then wheeling back in six days to be to be fourth at this same $25K starter level. The quality of that starter last year was as strong if not stronger than what's signed on this time–the winner earned a 98 Beyer Speed Figure next out when third in a Grade III at Keeneland and the runner-up was entering off a stakes placing of her own. Sure, there's some stakes form among Jungle Juice's competition here as well, but again, I'm not sure they're all going to relish the distance. Jungle Juice has been running exclusively on the dirt of late, and has earned some competitive figures that stack up reasonably well with these. The cutback from the one-mile Groupie Doll S. should give her an even bigger edge late, and trainer Anna Meah seems to do well going route to sprint. Selection: #7 Jungle Juice (8-1).

Kentucky Downs Turf Pick of the Day for Sept. 8

Steve Sherack: Monday's Results – Setting the Mood was fourth.

Race 5 – Reward Night has looked like a graded stakes horse in the making since switching to grass in his last two starts for Ian Wilkes. Rallied nicely–albeit into a hot pace–to finish a very useful third sprinting over the Ellis lawn July 9, then broke through with a visually impressive maiden score at this distance Aug. 6, coming home in a field-best :22.33. Still room for improvement as the son of Will Take Charge takes on winners for the first time here. Selection: #8 Reward Night (5-1).

Brian DiDonato: Monday's Results – Button Boy finished third.

Race 5 – This looks to be a really wide open race with lots of legitimate contenders. I'll take a bit of a flyer on lightly raced but well-bred Bugle of War (War Front). He's been off since finishing one spot behind recent Queen's Plate winner Safe Conduct in a Gulfstream allowance in March, and he probably needs to get a little faster to win this, but he figures to take a natural step forward with expected maturity in the time away. His maiden-breaking romp came at 1 1/16 miles, so this one-mile trip might be to his liking compared to his two nine-furlong attempts. Accomplished trainer Eddie Kenneally has had a quiet year by his standards, but he's been heating up of late with a Grade I win at Arlington and win rate close to 20% at the Ellis meet as of this writing. Selection: #3 Bugle of War (12-1).

Kentucky Downs Turf Pick of the Day for Sept. 6

Steve Sherack: Sunday's Results – Gamble's Orb finished 6th.

Monday – Race 7 – Considering the brutal meet trainer Saffie Joseph, Jr. has endured at Saratoga this summer, Setting the Mood's second-place finish in a first-level allowance going long Aug. 6 looks even better now. Claimed for just $20k back in March and a back-to-back winner at Gulfstream right out of the box, she's really seemed to re-find her very solid long-distance grass form versus much tougher of 2020 for Todd Pletcher, which is easily good enough to win this. Selection: #3 Setting the Mood (7-2).

Brian DiDonato: Sunday's Results – Go Bali Go rushed up to set the pace before fading late.

Monday – Race 4 – Cutbacks don't typically work in traditional turf sprints (i.e. 5f or 5 1/2f), but they seem to be pretty effective in these elongated sprints at Kentucky Downs. There are several who are shortening up in this race, and the one who interests me most is Button Boy. He ran like a prototypical cutback candidate in his last two–in contention turning for home and then just up and down in the stretch. Trainer Nacho Correas takes the blinkers off this time and the gelding shows two very sharp-looking works since his last start. With Julien Leparoux up, I'd expect Button Back to sit back and hopefully pick them all off late with a closing kick he hasn't shown going long. Selection: #3 Button Boy (8-1).

The richest six days in horse racing is now named the FanDuel Meet at Kentucky Downs, where among America's largest fields run for some of the world's biggest purses Sept. 5, 6, 8, 9, 11 and 12.

// TVG becomes Kentucky Downs' official Advance Deposit Wagering (ADW) platform.

// Being title sponsor of the $1 million FanDuel Turf Sprint, a Grade 3 stakes Sept. 11 that is one of two Breeders' Cup Challenge Series races at the meet. The winner will receive a fees-paid berth in the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar.
