Breeders’ Cup Announces Free Fan Contest: $5,000 Preakness Spin To Win

The Breeders' Cup, one of Thoroughbred horse racing's most prestigious international events, today announces the $5,000 Preakness Spin to Win contest. Surrounding the Preakness Stakes (G1), which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Md., the contest will offer new opportunities to win cash prizes and rewards while bringing in both longtime horse racing fans and new viewers to the sport.

“Now that the Preakness Stakes has become a part of the Breeders' Cup Challenge “Win and You're In” Series, the anticipation and stakes are higher than ever before as fans wait to see which horse will win and go on to compete in the $6 million Longines Breeders' Cup Classic on Nov. 7,” said Justin McDonald, Breeders' Cup Senior Vice President of Marketing. “The Preakness presents the perfect opportunity to engage the horse racing community during one of the sport's biggest days and we're hopeful that this contest will drive additional awareness and viewership surrounding the race as well.”

Fans are able to participate in the digital contest by visiting BreedersCup.com/Preakness to spin a digital wheel, from which players will be assigned at random a horse running in the Preakness Stakes. On Oct. 3, participants are encouraged to watch the Preakness Stakes live on NBC to find out if their chosen horse wins. Six lucky winners will be selected from the pool of entrants who were assigned the winning horse of the Preakness Stakes. The winner of the grand prize will earn a total of $5,000, while five additional winners will receive $250 gift cards to be redeemed at the Breeders' Cup Shop.

The $5,000 Preakness Spin to Win is open now and will run until 6:45 p.m. ET on Oct. 3. Winners must be legal residents of the U.S. and Canada (excluding Quebec) and be at least 18 years of age at the time of entry. Santa Anita Offering Winner’s Circle Fan Cut Outs With Donation To CARMA, PDJF

If you love horses and jockeys, Santa Anita's new Virtual Runhappy Winner's Circle Fan Cut Out is a great way to show your appreciation and benefit retired racehorses and injured riders.

Beginning Friday, opening day of Santa Anita's 16-day Autumn Meeting, fans can have their cut out images appear in Santa Anita's Runhappy Winner's Circle with the San Gabriel Mountains serving as a backdrop.

For a donation of $200, one hundred percent of which will go to support the California Retirement Management Account (CARMA) and the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF), a personalized fan cut out will be displayed throughout the Autumn Meet, which concludes on Oct. 25.

Once a donation is received, Santa Anita will assist in submitting individual pictures within 48 hours.

Study: How To Cool Out A Horse Quickly

Five methods commonly used to cool out horses in hot and humid environment were evaluated to determine which cooled the horses the quickest. The study team used rectal temperature and pulmonary artery blood temperature, which is an indicator of core body temperature, for their findings.

Drs. Yuji Takahashi, Hajime Ohmura, Kazutaka Mukai, Tomoki Shiose and Toshiyuki Takahashi exercised five Thoroughbreds on a treadmill in WetBulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) of nearly 90 degrees Fahrenheit. WBGT is a measure of heat stress in direct sunlight; it considers temperature, humidity, sun angle, wind speed and cloud cover. This is different than the heat index, which only takes into consideration humidity and temperature in shady areas.

Each horse was worked at a canter five separate times until their arterial blood temperature reached nearly 108 degrees F. They were then given a different cooling treatment each time. These included:

Walking on a treadmill with slow fan blowing on the horse
Walking on a treadmill with two large fans blowing on the horse
Intermittent cold-water hosing and scraping while walking on a treadmill. Every three minutes the horse was taken off the treadmill and hosed all over his body, but not his head and neck, with 4 gallons of 50 degree water, scraped and returned to the treadmill.
Intermittent cold-water hosing and no scraping used the same parameters as above, but did not remove the water from the horse
Continually using cool water on a horse that is not on a treadmill. The horse was hosed all over with water that was nearly 80 degrees F.

The team determined that the fastest method of cooling out a horse was continually hosing the horse with cool water. This lowered the horse's temperature five times faster than intermittent hosing with cold water. Scraping off the water did not affect the rate of cooling.
