Flying Five Glory For Excelebration’s Moss Tucker

First there was the Live In The Dream (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) at 28-1 in the Nunthorpe, then Saturday's Haydock Sprint Cup turn-up courtesy of the 10-1 shot Regional (GB) (Territories {Ire}) and now Moss Tucker (Ire) (Excelebration {Ire}–Rare Symphony {Ire}, by Pastoral Pursuits {GB}) to complete the shock treble at 16-1 in Sunday's G1 Al Basti Equiworld, Dubai Flying Five S. at the Curragh, a GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint qualifier. This looked a surefire renewal for the Brits on form, but one by one Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}), Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) and Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) wilted leaving it to a triumvirate of outsiders to fight it out.

As the 22-1 shot Get Ahead (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and fellow outsider at 20-1, Equality (GB) (Equiano {Fr}), tried hard to bring the prize back across the Irish Sea in the closing stages, Billy Lee kept asking the Ken Condon-trained 5-year-old and the response was typically courageous and honest. Using the extra stamina he displayed when taking the six-furlong G3 Phoenix Sprint S. here last time, Moss Tucker forged ahead late to deny Get Ahead by half a length, with Equality eventually beaten another 1 1/4 lengths in third. Following the preceding rain, Highfield Princess was hammered into even-money favouritism but uncharacteristically missed the break and struggled some way out.

“It's fantastic on the Curragh, on the most important weekend in Irish racing. It's just been a great story with this horse how he has progressed and kept improving,” Condon said. “You're thinking if we got placed it would be a super effort and then the heavens opened about an hour and a half ago which helped us a good bit. He was very good here the last day a month ago. We thought that was a career-best and obviously this is another step in the right direction.”

Moss Tucker had been to The Curragh on eight occasions prior to this, with wins in the aforementioned Phoenix Sprint and also the Listed Waterford Testimonial S. in October to his name as well as a third to Art Power in the G2 Sapphire S. In July. Also responsible for upsetting Tenebrism (Caravaggio) in the Listed Woodlands S. at Naas in April, the gelding needed a slice of luck to get one of these on his file but had that in spades here with the British contingent so below-par.

Billy Lee said, “Ken and I love this horse and he has been a brilliant servant who has made his way up through the grades. He is as genuine as they come, things went lovely today–he jumped and travelled well, but when they quickened at the two I thought I was in trouble. He is all heart though, stuck to his guns and really battled hard. He is just a brilliant horse and while we have had a quietish year, this one winner makes all the difference.”

Barney Roy Battles to Further German Glory

Godolphin’s well-travelled Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}), fresh from success in July’s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich and a fourth in last month’s G1 Preis von Europa at Cologne, added another elite-level victory to his resume with a battling victory in Sunday’s Longines-sponsored 148th Grosser Preis von Baden. Rider James Doyle employed patient tactics, passing the judge in fifth, before improving one spot along the backstraight. Scrubbed along and fanning wide for his challenge off the home turn, the 4-1 second favourite was ridden to the fore entering the final furlong and driven out to assert superiority in game fashion. The pacesetting Communique (Ire) (Casamento {Ire}) rallied gamely once headed and finished 1 1/4 lengths behind in second with G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}) running on to finish a neck back in third.

“It looked a strong race on paper beforehand and I think the betting suggested everyone was quite closely matched,” said winning rider James Doyle. “We had the German Derby form and a few of Barney’s races all tied in so it was a strong race. The ground was a bit testing for him in Cologne, but it’s dried here okay. It’s not his optimum racing surface, but it suited him better and he got away with it today.”

Godolphin’s Alex Merriam added, “He’s always been full of enthusiasm, as he’s shown this season, he’s had some great races and we’re delighted to see him win another Group 1. We’ve been very lucky in Germany, we’ve always been well treated and Ghaiyyath won this last year. We’ll get him home and see how he is, but Charlie [Appleby] has mentioned the possibility of going to Canada for the [GI] Northern Dancer [Turf S. at Woodbine].”

Barney Roy is the first of five foals and one of three winners produced by a daughter of G3 Ridgewood Pearl S. and G3 Brownstown Stud S. victress Cheyenne Star (Ire) (Mujahid). He is a half-brother to Listed Maggie Dickson Gold Cup runner-up Wisdom Mind (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and the once-placed 2-year-old colt Noble Dynasty (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Barney Roy’s German Adventure Yields A Third Group 1 Success

Godolphin’s well-travelled Barney Roy (GB) (Excelebration {Ire}) began this latest European campaign with a third in Royal Ascot’s G1 Prince of Wales’s S. last month and the gelded bay was all heart to claim Sunday’s G1 Grosser Dallmayr-Preis – Bayerisches Zuchtrennen at Munich. The even-money favourite sported temporary headgear during the preliminaries of the 10-furlong contest and the soothing effect contributed to a smooth passage off the clear leaders in rear for the most part. Making headway in the straight when ridden along with a quarter-mile remaining, he joined the front rank, despite rolling around, entering the final furlong and was driven out to earn a third elite-level success in game fashion. Try as he might, last term’s G1 Deutsches Derby fourth Quest The Moon (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) could not find a way past in the latter stages and was denied by a neck, with Joseph O’Brien-trained G3 Meld S. victor Patrick Sarsfield (Fr) (Australia {GB}) running on well to finish 1 1/4 lengths adrift in third.

“We were a little concerned when the rain came this morning as all of his best form is on fast ground,” said William Buick of the 2017 G1 St James’s Palace S. and this year’s G1 Jebel Hatta hero. “I thought the German horses set a very good standard, it was a very tough race and he struggled with the conditions from a long way out. He’s a high-class horse and his courage and ability got him to win the race. We thought the pace would be good and he jumped a little bit slow from the gates. We were positioned one place further back than where I wanted to be, but he was comfortable and relaxed. I followed Quest The Moon as I knew he’d take me into the race and I got a nice lead off him.”

Winning trainer Charlie Appleby added, “Barney Roy and Spotify flew in yesterday and stabled well overnight, but we came here looking for good-to-firm ground and the rain was a negative for our two horses. There was a strong pace from the start, the local horses ran very well and stamina really came into play.” He continued, “I’d like to thank Munich for putting the race on and allowing us to come. I’d also like to thank the sponsors very much for sponsoring the race at such challenging times for everybody. We’re delighted to be here, at Group 1 level, for Godolphin and very much appreciate everybody’s support.”
