Second Irish EBF Ballyhane S. Field Revealed

The field for the 24-strong €300,000 Irish EBF Ballyhane S. was revealed on Friday. Led by the unbeaten Sacred Bridge (GB) (Bated Breath {GB}), the race will begin at 2:25 p.m. at Naas Racecourse on Aug. 2. Her Ger Lyons stablemate Recurrent Dream (Ire) (Elzaam {Aus}) sports a win over the course and distance, and they will be joined in the lineup by their yardmate Jarvis (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}).

The Brighton winner Dusky Prince (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) and the aforementioned Recurrent Dream are both running for the €50,000 Ballyhane Bonus, as they are both by Ballyhane stallions. Dusky Prince's latest run was an off-the-board finish in the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot in June.

Said trainer Archie Watson of Dusky Prince, “Dusky Prince is a very solid colt. He won nicely at Brighton on his debut and things just didn't go his way since. He missed the break in the Woodcote and it was horrible ground that day and then things just happened too quick for him at Royal Ascot back over five furlongs in the Windsor Castle.

“The step back up in trip on Monday will be a help and this was a race we were keen to support and with Dusky Prince being by Prince Of Lir and the bonus for a winner by Prince Of Lir it was certainly worth having a crack at.”

Other intriguing entrants include the dual winner Bosh (Ire) (Profitable {Ire}), who is trained by Richard Hannon, while Kevin Ryan fields the pair of Aleezdancer (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) and Smullen (Ire) (Camacho {GB}). Ever Given (Ire) (Kodi Bear {Ire}) hails from the Tom Dascombe barn and won the Unibet Deposit £10 Get £40 Bonus Nursery H. at Goodwood on Friday. The winning Missing Matron (Ire) (Vocalised) will start for Jim Bolger.

In its second year, the race is restricted to juveniles that are EBF eligible and whose sire established a median price of not more than €75,000 at the 2020 yearling sales. The races's winning breeder will receive a free nomination to one of the Ballyhane sires courtesy of Ballyhane Stud. In addition, if the winner is by a Ballyhane Stud stallion, there is a €50,000 bonus on top of the €300,000 purse. The racecourse has also partnered with the Barretstown children's charity to raise funds during the Ballyhane S.

EBF Pledges £1.8-Million To Prizemoney In 2021

The European Breeders' Fund has pledged £1.8-million of its earnings from British-based stallions to prizemoney enhancements in 2021 between flat and National Hunt races, focused between Class 4 and listed level races. The £1.68-million pledged to flat racing covers more than 600 races, and is the EBF's joint-highest contribution equal to 2019.

In 2020, 595 flat races were run in 2020 under EBF conditions, receiving £1,430,250 of funding. British EBF financial contributions made up 22.5% of the £6,358,360 total prize money of these races, making them the second-largest sponsor in the sport. When racing was halted in the early part of 2020, the EBF re-strategised its initial allocations to release as much EBF money as possible when racing resumed. It also asked racecourses to reflect 100% of EBF money above the BHA minimum prize funds.

“2020 was a tough year for everyone but we were delighted to be able to get more than £1.5-million in to prize money, even with a truncated race programme,” said British EBF Chairman Simon Sweeting. “The relative strength of the stallion market means that we have been able to maintain our commitment to racing's prize money in 2021, when we know the effects of the last year will be felt keenly. We hope by the careful budgeting and strategy of the British EBF team, that we will be able to provide a certain amount of continuity and continue to elevate prize money wherever we can.”

British EBF Race Planning Committee Member Sam Bullard added, “We are constantly assessing our portfolio of races and how we support them; we work closely with the BHA and racecourses to identify new funding opportunities and are happy to support a much-needed new conditions race for 3-year-olds to be debuted at Goodwood's May fixture. We are also keen to back projects that provide specific developmental opportunities. A great example of this are the hugely successful British EBF Future Stayers' races. Designed to give juvenile maiden and novice opportunities for horses with middle and staying distance pedigrees, they have produced a runners to subsequent black-type winners ratio of 9%.”

The British EBF welcomes Jono Mills as a trustee for 2021. Mills replaces Sam Bullard as the Darley representative, but will remain on both the Flat and National Hunt Race Planning Committees.

British EBF To Add £750,000 To Purses

The British European Breeders’ Fund will add £750,000 to British purses through the remainder of the year, returning its contributions to pre-Covid levels. All races carrying EBF conditions will be run from £1,000 to £25,000 above the minimum value.

“On behalf of the ROA and the Horsemen’s Group, we welcome the announcement today from the British EBF that they will be supporting the revised fixture list from September to December this year with a contribution to prize money which will exceed £750,000,” said Racehorse Owners’ Association President Charlie Parker. “We have seen significant downward pressure on prize money since resumption so the work that the British EBF has done and today’s announcement is very good news for all horsemen.”
