Top Class Pedigrees on Offer as Entries for Two-Day Sale Announced by JRHA

Progeny of the 1,000 Guineas winner Homecoming Queen (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}), Irish 1,000 Guineas scorer Jet Setting (Ire) (Fast Company {Ire}) and American Oaks heroine Spanish Queen (Tribal Rule) feature among the high-class offerings at the two-day Japan Racing Horse Association Select Sale on July 11 and 12.

Japanese-breds have starred on the international stage in recent times, highlighted by the success of Marche Lorraine (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) and Loves Only You (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}), both trained by Yoshito Yahagi, who made history by becoming the first Japanese-trained winners at the Breeders' Cup last season.

The strength of Japanese racing was further highlighted by an impressive haul of five wins at the Dubai World Cup meeting at Meydan back in March and some of the best bred yearlings and foals the country has to offer will go under the hammer next month.

The sale will be kick-started by 243 yearlings, of which there are sons and daughters of Frankel (GB), Gun Runner, Heart's Cry (Jpn), Lord Kanaloa (Jpn), Mind Your Biscuits, Omaha Beach, Saxon Warrior (Jpn) and Thunder Snow (Ire) on July 11.

There are 241 foals listed for the following day, with progeny by top-notch stallions Al Ain (Jpn), American Pharoah, Caravaggio, City of Light, Duramente (Jpn), Justify, Karakontie (Jpn), Kizuna (Jpn), McKinzie, Nadal, No Nay Never and Nyquist on offer.

Homecoming Queen was a brilliant winner of the 1,000 Guineas in 2012 and is already a proven producer of talent with her daughter Shale (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) winning the Group 1 Moyglare Stud S. at the Curragh in 2020. Jet Setting famously took the scalp of Minding (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) when winning the Irish 1,000 Guineas in 2016 while Spanish Queen gained her American Oaks win in 2015.

The catalogue is available online at www.jrha-selectsale.com and print copies will be sent out by June 4. The JRHA will have Covid-19 safety protocols in place for the live two-day sale. For more information, email lem00454@nifty.ne.jp.

Royal Ascot Next for Irish Guineas Runner-Up New Energy

Sheila Lavery is eyeing a tilt at Royal Ascot for New Energy (Ire) (New Bay {GB}), who out-ran his odds of 40-1 to chase home Native Trail  (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in the Irish 2,000 Guineas on Saturday.

New Energy, a £65,000 purchase by Lavery and bloodstock agent Ted Durcan from Ballylinch Stud at the Tattersalls Ireland Goresbridge Breeze-up Sale last year, is on course to run in the St James's Palace S. at the royal meeting.

“He's come out of the race really well and our next target will be Ascot, most probably the St James's Palace,” said Lavery on Monday.

“We'll enter him up for the Jersey as well, just in case, but I think that will be our next step. I think he deserves to run in the St James's Palace, that's the best way of putting it.”

Lavery, who sent out Lady Kaya (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) to finish second in the 1000 Guineas at Newmarket in 2019, added, “We were absolutely thrilled, we always thought he'd be better at Group One pace and he got that at the weekend. I was really thrilled with him.

“It was a beautiful ride from Billy Lee, too. I do think Native Trail was just idling in front and if we'd have got to him he'd have just pulled out more, but we were delighted and it's really exciting.”

Derby Italiano Glory For Reliable Man’s Ardakan

Favoured Ardakan (GB) (Reliable Man {GB}) rewarded the Capannelle faithful with a narrow score in the G2 Derby Italiano over 2200 metres on Sunday.

Tanking up to sit in midpack while glued to the rail, the Markus Klug-trained colt was a bit keen nearing the bend, but eventually settled down. He edged toward the front under his own power while still saving ground, and was tipped off the inside to make his run 800 metres from home. Employing a speedy turn of foot, he drew into contention at the 600-metre mark, but was passed by Tempesti (Ity) (Albert Dock {Jpn}), who rallied sharply and took over inside the final quarter-mile. Not letting that foe out of his sights, he dove back to the fence and just edged him by a neck. It was 3 1/4 lengths back to Frozen Day (Ire) (The Gurkha {Ire}) in third.

Lightly raced, the grey broke his maiden in the G3 Premio Berardelli in Rome last November, his third trip to the post. He was three-quarters of a length behind Martel (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) in the Listed Prix de l'Avre at ParisLongchamp in a warm-up for this test on May 5.

Pedigree Notes

Ardakan is one of 19 black-type winners, 14 at group level, for his shuttle sire Reliable Man. The grey has three Group 1 winners to his credit–Miami Bound (NZ), Inspirational Girl (NZ), and Miss Sentimental (NZ)–from his time spent shuttling to New Zealand. Sternkoenig (Ire) counts Ardakan as one of seven group winners among his 17 stakes winners as a broodmare sire. Also grey and tracing tail-male back to Nasrullah through the Grey Sovereign (GB) line, his daughters have produced three Group 1 winners led by the globetrotting Ivanhowe (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), and the G1 Deutsches Derby winners Windstoss (Ger) (Shirocco {Ger}) and Weltstar (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). The latter pair are both out of the winning mare Wellenspiel (Ger).

Stakes placed in Germany at three, Alaskakonigin (Ger) (Sternkoenig {Ire}) improved to take the Listed Grosser Preis der Sparkasse Dortmund over 2000 metres as a 4-year-old. Her first foal, Astor (Ger) (Siyouni {Fr}), was a winner, and the German stakes winner Alaskasonne (Fr) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), who ran third in the G2 Carl Jaspers Preis was her second foal. The latter holds an engagement in Tuesday's G2 Prix Corrida at Saint-Cloud. Ardakan is her third produce, while her Nathaniel (Ire) foal of 2020 died. A half-sister to multiple stakes winner and dual Group 3-placed Alicante (Ger) (Lando {Ger}), her latest produce is a yearling colt by Best Solution (Ire) already named Abanos (GB). Another half-sister to Alaskakonigin, the Dashing Blade (GB) filly Andrea (Ger), ran third in the G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) in 2009. The fourth dam, Anstandige (Ger) (Star Appeal {Ire}) was a half-sister to the high-class runner and influential matriarch Anna Paola (Ger) (Prince Ippi {Ger}).
