O’Brien Could Turn to Tuesday in Bid to Win 15th Irish Derby

It hasn't been done in over 25 years, but Cazoo Oaks heroine Tuesday (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) could bid to become the first filly since Balanchine (Storm Bird {Can}) in 1994 to win the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby on Saturday, her trainer Aidan O'Brien has revealed.

Luxembourg (Ire) (Camelot {GB}), who many believed was the ace in O'Brien's three-year-old pack, was sidelined shortly after finishing third in the 2000 Guineas and, after drawing a blank in the Derby, the master of Ballydoyle admitted that he may yet turn to the brilliant Oaks winner Tuesday in his bid to win the Irish Derby for a whopping 15th time.

A decision will be made for definite on Tuesday, according to O'Brien, who said, “It's possible we could supplement Tuesday and we'll decide in the morning.”

Last week's G2 King Edward VII S. winner Changingoftheguard (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) performed best of the O'Brien-trained colts in the Derby but never landed a blow on the winner Desert Crown (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) back in fifth.

Stablemate Stone Age (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), sent off 7-2 and ridden by Ryan Moore at Epsom, could only manage sixth, yet the market suggests he is the number one Irish Derby hope for Ballydoyle at odds of 9-2.

The Ralph Beckett-trained Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}), an unlucky third in the Derby, is a 5-4 favourite to gain compensation in Saturday's Curragh showpiece.

O'Brien enjoyed another successful Royal Ascot last week, once again being crowned leading trainer at the meeting over the five days, which saw him land his 900th Group or Graded race. He also moved within one of Sir Michael Stoute as the leading trainer at the fixture with his 81st winner.

Tuesday's Oaks form also took a boost on Sunday when Nashwa (GB) (Frankel {GB}), third at Epsom, stormed to French Oaks glory at Chantilly.

Rio Ferdinand ‘Excited’ to Link up With Jockey Club Through Youth Charity

Rio Ferdinand has linked up with the Jockey Club through his youth charity, the Rio Ferdinand Foundation, and described racing as having a lot to offer “as a career path and a sport”.

The former Manchester United and England defender will aim to help young people from some of the UK's most disadvantaged communities learn more about the sport as a pastime and an industry that they can work in.

Initially educating groups of 16 to 24 year olds about the sport through visits, open days and a number of sessions with its employees, the Jockey Club-which operates tracks including Cheltenham, Epsom, Aintree and Newmarket-will also showcase the wide variety of employment which horse racing offers, from sales and IT through to turf management and operational roles.

The partnership will be integral to the Rio Ferdinand Foundation's #NotBoxed campaign, which features a number of events and opportunities to drive new investment and support from business and government, other decision-makers and people in power and includes industries ranging from construction and sport to music and entertainment.

Ferdinand said, “I'm really excited that we're going to be working with the Jockey Club to demonstrate to so many young people everything horse racing has to offer, both as a career path and a sport.

“Ten years ago we set up the Rio Ferdinand Foundation with the aim of supporting and empowering 16 to 24 year olds from some of the UK's most disadvantaged communities, whilst also tackling racism and inequality head on.

He added, “Ever since then we've helped thousands of young people through education and employment, opening their eyes to the opportunities that are out there and helping them make the most of the skills and talent they have.

“Day in, day out we work with community centres, education providers and a whole host of industries with the goal of helping young people realise their true potential and it's fantastic that we're now able to do the same in horse racing through this collaboration with the Jockey Club.”

Menuisier Upbeat About Irish Derby Hope Lionel

David Menuisier has provided an upbeat bulletin on G1 Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby hope Lionel (GB) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) after the colt delighted the trainer in a recent racecourse gallop at Kempton.

A winner of the Listed Cocked Hat S. when last seen, Lionel is a general 10-1 chance for the Curragh Classic and is reported to be in rude health by his trainer.

Menuisier said, “All is in place for Saturday-so far so good. He keeps on developing and [is] getting stronger and stronger. He did a nice piece of work on Thursday at Kempton and that was pretty much his final bit and we were delighted. He's fit, he knows the job so all is good really.”

He added, “In an ideal world I'd like good, good to soft ground as he's a big horse. I think we're going there as one of the major players, but obviously I'm biased. I think he's a really nice horse and the difference between him and many of the other runners is that we have aimed at this race for a while.

“We mapped it out before his previous run, it's not an afterthought, put it that way-it was his main plan. We did try to run him at Lingfield before Goodwood, but he was a little under the weather. The plan was always to give him a good break before this and it has all gone according to plan.”

World Pool Increases at ’22 Royal Ascot Meeting

Royal Ascot set a new record with £168 million gross turnover for World Pool bets across the five-day meeting, which drew 273,465 attendees. Gross turnover for World Pool bets increased 35 percent over 2021's figures of £123.9 million. This year, the three biggest pools of the week were amassed in the G1 Coronation S. (£6.6 million), the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. (£6.4 million) and the G1 Gold Cup (£6.1 million). The Coronation now overtakes the G1 Cazoo Derby as the biggest British World Pool race to date. Each World Pool event is highlighted by a 'Moment of the Day,' rewarding a standout performance. Racing staff who look after the 'Moment of the Day' winner will receive £1,000 and a bottle of champagne.

Wednesday: Reg Todd, groom of Dark Shift, winner of the Royal Hunt Cup.
Thursday: Ollie Turner, groom and work rider of Claymore who won the Hampton Court S. He's travelling Head Lad for Jane Chapple-Hyam.
Friday: Naseem Khan, groom of Latin Lover who gave Harry Eustace his first Royal Ascot winner in the Palace of Holyroodhouse S.
Saturday: Liisi Hallik, groom of Holloway Boy who won the Chesham S.

At the end of the World Pool season, the 16 winners of “Moment of the Day” at World Pool events will compete for the overall World Pool “Moment of the Year,” which will be presented on British Champions Day Oct. 15. The overall winner will be determined by a combination of scores derived from a public vote and an industry panel. The winning yard who looks after the horse will be awarded the World Pool “Moment of the Year” and receive £34,000.
