Son Of Sophie P Debuts At Sandown

Observations on the European Racing Scene turns the spotlight on the best European races of the day, highlighting well-pedigreed horses early in their careers, horses of note returning to action and young runners that achieved notable results in the sales ring. Friday's Observations features a son of Grade I winner Sophie P (GB) (Bushranger {Ire}).

2.55 Sandown, Novice, £10,000, 2yo, 7fT
THE PARENT (GB) (Frankel {GB}) is a son of the GI Gamely S. heroine Sophie P (GB) (Bushranger {Ire}) who makes his debut for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum and the Richard Hannon stable in an intriguing contest. A 280,000gns Book 1 purchase, the February-foaled bay encounters Amo Racing and Omnihorse Racing's similarly-unraced Omniking (Ire) (Kingman {GB}), a David Loughnane-trained 300,000gns Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up graduate who is a son of the G1 Prix Ganay third Fate (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}) related to the champion Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre); and Jeff Smith's Newbury third Stormbuster (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), a full-brother to the G1 Juddmonte International heroine Arabian Queen (Ire) who represents the Andrew Balding stable.

Stellar Six Lined Up For Eclipse Clash

In what is shaping up as if it could be a vintage 2022 season, Saturday's G1 Coral-Eclipse S. has let nobody down with a high-class turn-out of six in what has historically been termed as the first “Clash of the Generations”. The Aga Khan's supplemented Prix du Jockey Club hero Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) was drawn in stall four on Thursday, next to Godolphin's more decorated fellow 3-year-old Native Trail (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) in five, with the race's possible pace angle Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}) widest in six. Following the expected withdrawal of Ballydoyle's trio which included two who had produced career-bests under aggressive front-running rides in Galileo (Ire)'s High Definition (Ire) and Stone Age (Ire), the question of who will take up the mantle in the lead is open to question.

Bridging the Gap

Caught out in a tactically-run affair 17 days ago in the G1 Prince of Wales's S., James Wigan and Ballylinch Stud's Bay Bridge (GB) (New Bay {GB}) could be ridden closer to the pace this time with Ryan Moore sure to be keen to address the defeat at the hands of the expertly-ridden State of Rest (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) at Royal Ascot. While there is no guarantee that the Sir Michael Stoute-trained 4-year-old would have won had he pressed Joseph O'Brien's colt further out, there are significant grounds to suggest he would have been closer at the death. Provided the 10-pound weight-for-age gift he presents to the year-younger duo is not insurmountable, he appeals as the ideal type for this race especially given how demonstrative he was in the G3 Brigadier Gerard S. over this course and distance May 26.

Faith Justified

James Wigan turned down overseas offers prior to selling a share in Bay Bridge to Ballylinch and believes his homebred has a strong chance of giving Stoute that seventh win in the race and hand him the overall record over Aidan O'Brien and Alec Taylor.

“Bay Bridge came back from Ascot bouncing and seems to be in rude health. I think the winner there was very cleverly ridden and stole a march on the others,” the owner-breeder told QIPCO British Champions Series. “I'm not saying we would have won if the race had been run differently, but he was beaten only a length and was still inching closer at the finish. If the race was run again I think we could have been closer still. It's probably the best Eclipse we've seen for a while, but he seemed to enjoy Sandown when he won the Brigadier Gerard.”

Egan Ready

Only third in this 12 months ago, Prince A A Faisal's Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) is back with a similar profile coming into it on his European bow and jockey David Egan is keen to resume his partnership with the 5-year-old. Whereas last term he was re-entering the fray after wins in the G1 Saudi Cup and G1 Dubai Sheema Classic, this time he cuts a more enigmatic figure having last been seen finishing a distant last of the 14 runners who took part in the Riyadh bonanza Feb. 26.

“I felt the dirt maybe wasn't riding with the same consistency as it did the previous year. It was a lot warmer, which will affect the dirt surface, and maybe it was a negative for him on the day,” Egan suggests. “He didn't jump as well, we asked him to get a prominent position and the pace was fierce–the winner came from a long way back. Mr. Gosden said he also got a bit of kickback, which might have affected him.”

Clean Slate

Ignoring that Saudi Cup effort, Mishriff remains the foremost older horse in this line-up on achievement and Egan is happy that the homebred is back in a good place ahead of Saturday.

“I've sat on him a number of times over the last couple of weeks and he feels in good form and tuned up and ready to go,” he added. “People have possibly written him off before and he's bounced back better than ever on a number of occasions. He's an exciting horse in that sense, knowing he can do that. He's the highest-rated horse in the race on paper and on figures he's the one to beat. It's a small field, but it's a boutique field and you could build a case for any horse in the race. Mishriff has been in a lot of tactical battles and I wouldn't be worried about the tactical aspect. He's pretty straightforward and he's an older, more mature horse now and easier to ride in some respects. He'll be a lot more mature than the 3-year-olds, which will only be an asset to him.”

Medaglia d’Oro Colt Shines During The First Day Of The Arqana Summer Sale

A son of Medaglia d'Oro (lot 33) topped the first session of the Arqana Summer Sale at €220,000 in Deauville on Thursday.

Offered by MC Thoroughbred, Marco Bozzi Bloodstock snapped up the May third foal, with Bozzi bidding beside Alessandro Botti on behalf of Prince Saud bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

“He's a lovely colt by Medaglia d'Oro, a stallion that has had a lot of success in Saudi Arabia,” said the agent. “We've been following the colt for a while already, and we went to see him in Ireland a month ago and really liked him. We're very happy with the purchase.”

Out of the Listed Marble Hill S. third So Stylish (Johannesburg), herself a half-sister to G1 Phoenix S. and G1 National S. hero One Cool Cat (Storm Cat), he is from the same family as the Group/Grade 1-placed duo of Savannah Dancer (Northern Dancer) and her daughter Sha Tha (Mr. Prospector). He previously brought $62,000 at the Fasig-Tipton Kentucky October Yearling Sale Stateside.

The second dearest lot of the day during the breeze-up portion was a colt by Exceed And Excel (Aus) (lot 72) out of the Intikhab mare Duquesa (Ire). Bozzi was in action once again, this time shelling out €110,000. From the Knockanglass Stables consignment, the bay is a half-brother to the listed-placed Born To Be (Born To Sea {Ire}), while his granddam, Love Of Silver (Arctic Tern), won the G3 Prestige S. in the UK and took third in the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac.

Leading the buyers' sheets for Flat-bred fillies, was another American-sired juvenile in lot 69, who is by the former shuttle stallion More Than Ready. A half-sister to the GIII Whitmore S. runner-up Tulane Tryst (Into Mischief) and from Mocklershill, she caught the eye of BBA Ireland and Yulong Investments at €77,000. Her dam is a half-sister to the stakes winner and Grade III-placed Abraham (Distorted Humor), while under the third dam is three-time Grade II victress and GI Go for Wand H. bridesmaid Miss Isella (Silver Charm).

At the end of the breeze-up portion, 73 Flat-bred 2-year-olds had sold (88%) for a gross of €1,393,500. The average was €21,773.

Store horses were also popular on the day with seven lots making six figures alongside the two Flat-bred juveniles. Of those seven, four were by Doctor Dino (Fr), with lot 114 the only other lot besides the Medaglia d'Oro colt to breach the €200,000 barrier. Knocked down for €210,000 to Bridge Consignment Ltd, the gelded store hails from the Jean-Marie Callier consignment. His dam, Miss de Champdoux (Fr) (Voix du Nord {Fr}) won at the Grade 2 level over jumps during her racing career.

“He's a lovely horse,” said Marius Cyprès of the colt who will bear the colours of a new French partnership including the family of Thierry Cypres. “He walks very well and comes from a great family. I know him well–I saw him grow up, so I am very happy. We've bought him for a new French partnership including my father and he'll stay in training in France.”

Another gelded son of Doctor Dino brought the third-highest price of the day at €160,000. Sold as lot 104 by The Channel Consignment, the son of Magnificat (Fr) (Saint des Saints {Fr}), herself a full-sister to graded-winning jumpers Happy Monarch (Fr) (Saint des Saints {Fr}) and Lord du Mesnil (Fr) (Saint des Saints {Fr}) went to NBB Racing.

Thursday's session comprised Flat-bred 2-year-olds and store horses, with the gross coming in at €5,598,500 for 169 lots of 205 offered (82.4%). The median improved to €21,000 (+55.6%) and the average also jumped up to €33,127 (+60%).

The second and final session of the Arqana Summer Sale will start at 11 a.m. with breeding stock and horses-in-training.

Cotai Glory Filly Strikes At Group Level In Milan

Bottle Of Bubbles (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}), one of two horses in the G3 Premio Primi Passi for trainer Florian Guyader and owner Theresa Marnane, ran out a narrow winner against colts in the 1200-metre contest at San Siro on Thursday.

Part of a 7-2 joint entry with stablemate Mandega (Fr) (Panis), the £18,000 Tattersalls Ireland September yearling raced at the rear of the field as Optically (Ity) (Le Vie Infinite {Ire}) led. She charged up on the heels of the stalking second Saputello (Ity) (Lord Chaparral {Ire}), before shifting toward the outside for her challenge past halfway.

It took most of the stretch to subdue the new leader as Optically dropped back, but she bested that foe just inside the final furlong, and held off a closing Vero Atleta (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) to win by a neck. Saputello hung grimly on for third by a half-length. Mandega was a staying on fifth, behind Edith Dei Grif (Ity) (Sakhee's Secret {GB}).

A winner at first asking at Lyon-Parilly in March, the bay was second in the Listed Premio Alessandro Perrone three starts later in Rome on May 22. She was fifth at Chantilly on June 5 in her most recent appearance.

Pedigree Notes

Cotai Glory celebrated his third black-type winner and second group winner with Bottle Of Bubbles's victory. His Atomic Force (Ire) has won twice at group level in France, while Purciaretta (Ire) struck at the listed level in Italy. The young Tally-Ho Stud-based sire has eight other stakes-placed horses to his name.

The winner is the third foal and first winner for her dam, who won twice as a juvenile. This is the same female family as G1 Cheveley Park S. heroine Airwave (GB) (Air Express {Ire}), herself the dam of five black-type winners including Meow (Ire) (Storm Cat), the dam of Group 1-winning Galileo (Ire) full-siblings Churchill (Ire) and Clemmie (Ire).
