Camelot’s Sammarco Prevails In Deutsches Derby Thriller

Hamburg's new starting stalls, wider than before, were the reason for a near 30-minute delay to Sunday's G1 IDEE 153rd Deutsches Derby and course technicians worked furiously on making necessary adjustments to the running rail so that they would fit the track. In the €650,000 contest itself, it was a matter of millimetres at the finish too as Gestut Park Wiedingen's G2 Union-Rennen victor Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB) denied the Markus Klug-trained duo Schwarzer Peter (Ger) (Neatico {Ger}) and So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in a thrilling conclusion to Germany's seasonal highlight.

Sammarco opened up with a neck defeat of subsequent sales-race scorer Alaska Tiger (Ire) (Maxios {GB}) when graduating over 7 1/2 furlongs in his Oct. 31 debut at Halle, his lone juvenile start, and returned to run second behind the reopposing Lavello (Ire) (Zarak {Fr}) in Munich's 10-furlong May 1 G3 Bavarian Classic on seasonal debut. He lined up for this date with destiny coming back off a narrow defeat of So Moonstruck upped to 11 furlongs in Cologne's June 6 G2 Union-Rennen, Germany's premier trial for this race, and was sharp from the two box to race third going by the judge first time. Comfortable there until shuffled back when caught in a pocket off the home turn, the 63-10 chance made rapid headway once in the clear to launch his bid passing the furlong marker and was driven out to prevail in a blanket finish. The winning margins were a short head and the same back to Schwarzer Peter and So Moonstruck.

“I am overwhelmed and can hardly speak at the moment,” said rider Bauyrzhan Murzabayev after claiming a first success in the contest. “I am so proud of this horse. We had the perfect race, right from the start, although the pace could have been a bit stronger. I have to be very thankful that Jozef Bojko [aboard Maraseem] allowed some room soon after entering the straight. That helped enormously as I was able to find a free passage on the inside.”

Contributing to a list of notable firsts, Gestut Park Wiedingen's Baron Helmut von Finck added, “We have been a breeding operation for 35 years now and this is a lifetime dream come true. It is absolutely awesome.”

Trainer Peter Schiergen took his tally in the feature to six and said, “Everything went smoothly and exactly as we had planned. Bauyrzhan gave Sammarco a great ride and really earned his first Group 1 and Derby victory. It was only Sammarco's fourth start, he has won two Group races now and was Group-placed before. I am quite positive that he is a true Group 1 horse in the making.”

Sammarco, who becomes the 10th Group 1 winner for his sire, is the first of three foals produced by Listed Winterkonigin-Trial placegetter Saloon Sold (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), herself a granddaughter of Listed Baden-Baden Cup victrix Salonblue (Ire) (Bluebird). The latter's progeny list includes Listed Melbourne Cup Day Plate victor Salon Soldier (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}), GSP Listed Junioren-Preis victrix Salonlove (Ger) (Lawman {Fr}) and Listed Premio Tadolina winner Monblue (GB) (Monsun {Ger}). She is also the second dam of Listed Preis der Baden-Badener Hotellerie & Gastronomie winner Serena (Ger) (Soldier Hollow {GB}). Salonblue is also kin to G3 Curragh Cup victor Peppertree Lane (Ire) (Peintre Celebre) and stakes-winning G3 Preis der Deutschen Einheit second Salonhonor (Ger) (Highest Honor {Fr}). Another of Salonblue's siblings, Salontasche (Ger) (Dashing Blade {GB}), has four stakes performers to her credit headed by multiple stakes-winning G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) runner-up Sarandia (Ger) (Dansili {GB}) and G3 Bavarian Classic victor Saphir (Ger) (Black Sam Bellamy {Ire}). Sammarco's fourth dam is G2 German 1000 Guineas third Salonrolle (Ire) (Tirol {Ire}). Saloon Sold has the hitherto unraced 2-year-old filly Salon Starlet (Ger) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) and a yearling colt by Areion (Ger) to come.

Hurricane Alert At Saint-Cloud

It can't always be said that the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud is the strongest of the Group 1 races in Europe, but Sunday's line-up stands up to inspection with Godolphin's Hurricane Lane (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) looking to build on his respectable if uninspiring return effort in the G2 Hardwicke S. While excuses can be made on account of the prevalent fast ground at Royal Ascot and the fact that he would have needed his seasonal bow, there is always a concern when such a luminary fails to spark during such an important phase of his career. His achievements at three are undeniably impressive, with few colts able to pull off a rare treble of G1 Irish Derby, G1 Grand Prix de Paris and G1 St Leger with such dash and authority and his parting shot of running third in the Arc only served to enhance his reputation.

“I'll be honest, I was pleased with his [Hardwicke] run,” Charlie Appleby said. “Pre-race I was confident that we'd got his level of fitness up there, but turning four he's done very well physically and he's certainly tightened up for the run, that's for sure. What we've seen since the race is a sharper, tighter model. Some might ask if 15 days is enough time between runs, but 15 days was always our plan–the Hardwicke and then the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud and what we saw last year was he thrives on his races. He went English Derby, Irish Derby and then Grand Prix de Paris last year and that was probably his most impressive victory, so he thrives on his racing and we're very happy.”

 

Welcome Back Alpinista

Whereas Hurricane Lane has had the sharpener in 2022, Kirsten Rausing's Alpinista (GB) (Frankel {GB}) has been denied that and she is in a lot deeper than she was on this weekend last year when marking her seasonal debut with a workmanlike success in the G2 Lancashire Oaks. Whatever her state of readiness, the Sir Mark Prescott-trained grey is a welcome sight coming back off her remarkable treble of G1 Grosser Preis Von Berlin, G1 Preis Von Europa and G1 Grosser Preis Von Bayern. Given that the former of those races was taken at the expense of Torquator Tasso (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), it is clear that we are looking at a major talent among Europe's older horses.

 

Will The Eagle Land?

Like Hurricane Lane, Ballylinch Stud and Aquis Farm's Lone Eagle (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was a touch flat on his return when a well-beaten third to a resurgent Third Realm (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in Goodwood's Listed Tapster S. May 21, but he probably ran no worse than he had on his 2021 return when fourth behind Alenquer (Fr) (Adlerflug {Ger}), Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) and Yibir (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) in the G3 Sandown Classic Trial. On his next start, he had made a significant leap to hand Yibir five pounds and a four-length beating in the Listed Cocked Hat S. on soft before making Hurricane Lane pull out all the stops in the Irish Derby.

Freddie Meade said, “It was very important to get that run into him, as he showed last year. I think we're in a good spot with him and I think he's earned his place. He had some of the best form in the book last year and he's done well.”

 

Deutsches Delight

There is a fascinating 153rd edition of the G1 IDEE Deutsches Derby at Hamburg, where the key protagonists appear to be Darius Racing's May 22 G2 Derby Italiano winner Ardakan (GB) (Reliable Man {GB}), Gestut Rottgen's impressive June 5 G3 Diana Trial scorer Wagnis (Ger) (Adlerflug {Ger}), Gestut Park Wiedingen's June 6 G2 Union-Rennen winner Sammarco (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) and Gestut Schlenderhan's So Moonstruck (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), who was a head second in that 11-furlong Cologne contest. With seven runners all with solid prospects, the real story of the race is the dominance of Markus Klug with Frankie Dettori, Hollie Doyle and Richard Kingscote among the jockey bookings. Of the 20 in the line-up, there are only seven stables represented with Henk Grewe and Andreas Wohler also saddling four apiece and the latter handler has a bright prospect in Gestut Paschberg's May 28 G3 Baden-Baden Derby-Trial winner Queroyal (Ger) who could make it an even bigger weekend for his sire Churchill (Ire). Whatever the outcome, the lessons of recent years and especially of the 2021 Arc mean that eyes need to be peeled on Sunday afternoon.

Deep Impact’s Auguste Rodin A New TDN Rising Star

Unlucky on debut when second at The Curragh at the start of last month, Ballydoyle's Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}–Rhododendron {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) put that experience behind him to earn TDN Rising Star status at Naas on Saturday. Sent off the 30-100 favourite for the seven-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, the bay was swiftly into stride to race on the front end throughout the early stages. Shaken up by Seamus Heffernan to gain an outright advantage passing the two pole, he ran green in the clear but was always in his comfort zone en route to a two-length verdict over Shadowed (Ire) (Caravaggio), with Jim Bolger's highly-promising Young Ireland (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) a head away in third. “He had a lovely first run and he was an easy winner,” Heffernan said. “He gives me the feel of a proper horse and hopefully he keeps getting stronger. He won easy and it was nice to do the steering.”

Auguste Rodin is so far the sole foal out of the stable's high-class G1 Fillies' Mile, G1 Prix de l'Opera and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Rhododendron, who was also successful in the G2 Debutante S. and finished runner-up in the 1000 Guineas, Oaks and Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf. Her dam Halfway To Heaven (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), who was the winner of the Irish 1000 Guineas, G1 Sun Chariot S. and G1 Nassau S., also produced one of this yard's best females in the seven-time group 1 winner Magical (Ire) by Galileo and her group 3-winning sire Flying The Flag (Ire). Alongside Halfway To Heaven, the G2 King's Stand S.-winning third dam Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) who is a half-sister to Verglas (Ire) was also responsible for Galileo's GI First Lady S. and GI Rodeo Drive S. winner Photo Call (Ire).

Inspiral On Target For Falmouth, As Homeless Songs Stays Home

At the latest confirmation stage 11 fillies, including undefeated juvenile champion and G1 Coronation S. heroine Inspiral (GB) (Frankel {GB}), will contest the G1 Tattersalls Falmouth S. on July 8. The Cheveley Park Stud homebred's rider has not been revealed by John and Thady Gosden, as the former Clarehaven stable jockey Frankie Dettori is on “sabbatical”.

The elder Gosden was at Sandown to saddle Mishriff (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}), who was a narrow second in the G1 Coral-Eclipse, an said, “Sabbatical was a very carefully chosen word.

“I'm absolutely over the moon with what Frankie is doing, he's going to Germany [on Sunday], he's going to ride a lot for Mark Johnston at Newmarket next week because Joe [Fanning] has hurt his arm and then he's off to Belmont [next weekend], so he's doing exactly what I wanted to see.

“I'm very happy with it and he and I will be back together quite sensibly when we've passed through this.

“He knows as well as I do that you've got to be riding and not have any distractions. We've spoken again and we're very close friends, but I'm not going to say who is going to ride [Inspiral]–I've got to speak to the owners.”

The Italian has been aboard for four of the five 2021 juvenile filly champion's victories. Rob Havlin rode her in her winning debut at Newmarket last July.

One filly who will not take part in the Falmouth is the Dermot Weld-trained Moyglare Stud homebred Homeless Songs (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G1 Tattersalls Irish 1000 Guineas in scintillating fashion in May. Some of the fellow sophomore fillies that have stood their ground include G1 QIPCO 1000 Guineas second Prosperous Voyage (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), and a trio from Aidan O'Brien, among them Group 1 winner Tenebrism (Caravaggio). Among the older brigade is the multiple Group 1 winner Alcohol Free (Ire) (No Nay Never), Cheveley Park's G2 bet365 Mile heroine Lights On (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), and French raider Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), who won the G2 Prix du Muguet in early May.
