New Bay’s Saffron Beach Outmuscles G1 Prix Rothschild Rivals

Last term's G1 Sun Chariot S. victrix Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}–Falling Petals {Ire}, by Raven's Pass) posted a fourth in Meydan's Mar. 26 G1 Dubai Turf before regaining the winning thread in Royal Ascot's June 15 G2 Duke of Cambridge S. and continued on a roll with a decisive victory in Tuesday's G1 Prix Rothschild at Deauville. The 3-5 favourite was swiftly into stride and held sway in the centre of the track from the outset of this straight one-mile test. Drawing the sting out of her six rivals by setting a searching tempo throughout, she was stoked up when strongly pressed with 300 metres remaining and withstood every challenge under a late drive to win going away for second elite-level triumph. At the line, she was 2 1/2 lengths too good for the year-younger Tenebrism (Caravaggio), who just held on for second by a head from the fast-finishing Goldistyle (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}). The latter is a daughter of the storied Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa), who won four straight editions of this contest from 2008 through 2011.

“She's very strong with a lovely temperament and she is such a nice filly,” said trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam. “It is great to come here to Deauville and win this race. She has a lot of options to come and, I suppose, her main objectives are the [G1] Matron S. [at Leopardstown] and the [G1] Sun Chariot [S. at Newmarket].”

Winning rider William Buick continued, “She is just the sort of horse that makes life of a jockey so much easier. She has a great temperament, she is strong and so well balanced. She has speed, but also stays well and 10 furlongs would not be a problem for her. I kicked early because my main concern was Ryan [Moore]'s filly [Tenebrism], who won here over seven furlongs and has the speed and a turn of foot. Saffron Beach stays well so, up against such a profile, the earlier the race starts the better for a filly like mine.”

Saffron Beach, full-sister to a yearling colt and a weanling filly, is the third of six foals and the lone scorer produced by a winning daughter of the dual stakes-placed Infinite Spirit (Maria's Mon). Her dam Falling Petals (Ire) (Raven's Pass) is thus kin to G3 Criterion S. third Huntdown (Elusive Quality) and to the dam of three black-type performers headed by G3 World Trophy S. and G3 Molecomb S.-winning sire Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). Saffron Beach's third dam, G3 Matron S. victrix and G1 Coronation S. runner-up Eternal Reve (Diesis {GB}), is kin to GI Hollywood Derby hero Eternity Star (Majestic Light) and the Group 1-placed sire Eternity Range (Majestic Light). They are out of a half-sister to G1 Prix de la Salamandre victor and leading sire Miswaki (Mr. Prospector).

Dark Angel’s The Antarctic Battles To Cabourg Triumph

Coolmore, Westerberg & Brant's G2 Prix Robert Papin second The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}–Anna Law {Ire}, by Lawman {Fr}), a 750,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 full-brother to Battaash (Ire), rebounded off that Chantilly defeat to secure a first stakes success in Tuesday's G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg at Deauville. The February-foaled grey had earlier backed up two early-season wins with a seventh in Royal Ascot's June 16 G2 Norfolk S. before hitting the board in June's Listed Tipperary S. in his last-but-one start. Missing a beat at the kick, the crowd's 6-5 pick soon recovered to race on the heels of the leaders in fourth. Shaken up and angled into clear either side of the two pole, he made his challenge at the furlong marker and was driven out by Ryan Moore in the closing stages to assert by a length from Manhattan Jungle (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}). Michael Bell trainee Kerindia (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) completed a sweep for the overseas raiders and finished 3/4-of-a-length adrift in third.

“The Antarctic had run so well last time out and he is a lovely, improving horse,” said Aidan O'Brien after bridging a 24-year gap back to his only prior winner of the contest, Hunan (Ire) (College Chapel {GB}), in 1998. “He has progressed with every run, he's gone very professional and is going the right way and we're very happy. Ryan [Moore] said the trip is no problem, from five, six or seven [furlongs], because he relaxes and quickens well. That's a good sign. He's got a great physique and a good mind. He relaxed very well today and had a good trip throughout. We will see what could be next, but he could be a horse for the [Aug. 21 G1] Prix Morny. That was the reason for coming here today and that's what we're thinking at the moment.”

Moore, who swept both juvenile pattern races and would later add the Listed Prix Carrousel for a successful afternoon's work, added, “He is a lovely sort, he is very well bred obviously, being a full-brother to Battaash, and he's a very easy horse to ride. He is uncomplicated and has improved with every run because he is just learning how to run. He has benefitted from the experience of racing.”

The Antarctic, the fifth of six foals, is one of two scorers out of Anna Law (Ire) (Lawman {Fr}), herself a half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G2 Champagne S. victor and G1 July Cup third Etlaala (GB) (Selkirk). His dam's first foal is multiple Group 1-winning speedster Battaash (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and her latest is a yearling filly by Lope De Vega (Ire). Descendants of the The Antarctic's second dam Portelet (GB) (Night Shift) also include multiple Group-winning dual Group 1-placed sire Tasleet (GB) (Showcasing {GB}).

Sydneyarms Chelsea A Stakes First For Sioux Nation At Deauville

Charles Hill trainee Sydneyarms Chelsea (Ire) (Sioux Nation–Wedding Dress {GB}, by Tamayuz {GB}) ran fourth in Deauville's July 10 Listed Prix Roland de Chambure last time and was back over the same seven-furlong strip to register a career high in Tuesday's G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing, whilst also providing her freshman sire (by Scat Daddy) with a first black-type success. She had previously snagged her May 31 debut at Newbury and posted a fifth contesting Royal Ascot's June 17 G3 Albany S. in her penultimate start. Isolated in third as those in front went clear, the 67-10 chance made continued progress in the straight to launch her challenge passing the furlong marker and was ridden out to subdue the other British raider Ipanema Princess (Ire) (Kessaar {Ire}) before holding the late threat of Roland de Chambure runner-up Terrestrial (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) by 3/4-of-a-length. Ipanema Princess finished a length back in third, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of 'TDN Rising Star' Gain It (GB) (De Treville {GB}), who raced too freely through the early fractions and was a spent force at the business end.

“She is still a big baby, but she's a very nice filly indeed,” commented Ryan Moore. “She had run a very good race over course and distance last time, but she does have a tendency to idle and pull up when she hits the front. She stuck at it today and finished off the race well.”

Sydneyarms Chelsea, half-sister to a yearling colt by Zoffany (Ire), is the second of three foals and lone performer produced by a winning half-sister to Listed Prix des Lilas third Delhi (GB) (High Chaparral {Ire}). The February-foaled bay's second dam Dream Day (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) ran second in the G3 Fred Darling S. and is one of three black-type performers out of Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr victrix and G3 Fred Darling third Capistrano Day (Diesis {GB). Capistrano Day, in turn, is a daughter of GI Beverly Hills H. heroine Alcando (Ire) (Alzao).

Rothschild Clash Kicks off Deauville August

Deauville's four-week bonanza begins on Tuesday with an array of class across four pattern races headed by the G1 Prix Rothschild, which brings together two of Europe's leading fillies in Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) and Tenebrism (Caravaggio). While the former's stamina for this mile is assured and proven, TDN Rising Star Tenebrism has yet to confirm that the trip is within reach. Saffron Beach, who had already displayed her quality at this level when overpowering her rivals in Newmarket's G1 Sun Chariot S. in October, arguably performed to an even higher standard when making light of a five-pound penalty in Royal Ascot's G2 Duke of Cambridge S. on her 2022 European bow June 15.

Jane Chapple-Hyam has no concerns heading into this contest, which sits perfectly in the 4-year-old's program heading to the Breeders' Cup. “It is a small, competitive field, but I feel she is good enough for the task ahead,” she said. “She has turned into a really good traveller now. She was always a little bit sticky as a younger horse, but even when we do go to the Breeders' Cup, I won't be nervous about her travelling. If we have got go on and lead, we will do. She made all in the Sun Chariot and at Ascot, just about.”

Painting The Picture

With Saffron Beach the lead performer on form with stamina to go further, it would be no surprise to see William Buick turn this into a test from some way out. Whatever the obvious talent of Ballydoyle's Tenebrism, the fact remains that she has excelled over six furlongs in the G1 Cheveley Park S. and at seven in this venue's G1 Prix Jean Prat July 10 and has been out of the frame when tried at a mile in the 1000 Guineas and G1 Coronation S. Ryan Moore has to ensure he is not too far out of his ground as the British raider applies the pressure and this will provide the definitive test as to whether she stays or not. “She showed at Ascot that she gets a mile and I think we saw a much better filly last time, with the promise of more to come,” her rider said in his betfair blog.

Hidden Pearls?

Haras de Saint Pair's capable Pearls Galore (Fr) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), who has a trio of pattern-race wins in her native Ireland including the May 22 G2 Lanwades Stud S. at The Curragh, will be prominently placed to add pace pressure and this has been the target for some time according to Paddy Twomey. “It has been the plan all year,” he said. “Andreas Putsch's farm is in Deauville and she was born and reared in Deauville, so the plan is to take her back and go and win there.” Of the French, Yeguada Centurion's May 8 G2 Prix du Muguet winner Sibila Spain (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) could add another dimension if reverting to her old front-running tactics, while the Wertheimers' Goldistyle (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) is a daughter of Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) who turned this into her own private procession between 2008 and 2011. She has to improve markedly on her latest fourth in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil at Chantilly June 19, where she held every chance but weakened late.

A Fast Start

Deauville's opening card begins with the G3 Prix de Psyche Sky Sports Racing for 3-year-old fillies over 10 furlongs, where Andre Fabre holds a strong hand including Ecurie Ama Zingteam's Hidden Dimples (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Impressive when beating the subsequent G1 Prix de Diane runner-up La Parisienne (Fr) (Zarak {Fr}) in ParisLongchamp's Listed Prix de la Seine over 11 furlongs May 15, she was a well-beaten fourth trying a mile and a half on soft ground in the G3 Prix de Royaumont at Chantilly June 5. Next up is the G3 Prix Six Perfections Sky Sports Racing over seven furlongs for the juvenile fillies, where Flaxman Stables' July 10 Listed Prix Roland de Chambure runner-up Terrestrial (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) encounters Rashit Shaykhutdinov's TDN Rising Star Gain It (GB) (De Treville {GB}) who impressed with a seven-length success at Saint-Cloud July 16, and Avatara SA & Haras D'Etreham's similarly-unbeaten Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}). In the six-furlong G3 Darley Prix de Cabourg also for the 2-year-olds, Ballydoyle look for further success with their strong crop with the July 17 G2 Prix Robert Papin runner-up The Antarctic (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Jean-Claude Seroul's June 5 Listed Prix la Fleche scorer and July 10 Listed Prix Yacowlef runner-up Wootton City (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) is among his rivals and she is three pounds better off with Guy Pariente's Sivana (Fr) (Goken {Fr}), who beat her by a head in that five-furlong contest.
