Ferguson To Re-Offer $1m Worth Of Fillies At Magic Millions Sale

Everyone has done something they have almost instantly-regretted at one point in their life. Be it ordering a round of tequila shots at the end of night on the tiles or simply saying hello to a random stranger on the street because you mistook them for somebody else; we've all experienced such pangs.

However, Rob Ferguson took things to a new level when splurging on 22 fillies to the tune of $1 million over a three-hour period at the National Yearling Sale under the banner of Louis Bloodstock back in June.

Not one person had heard of Louis Bloodstock, named after Ferguson's dog, at the time but he sure made his mark that afternoon.

He has since revealed that he experienced a “medical episode” during the spending spree and will now offer all 22 unbroken 2-year-old fillies at the Magic Millions Online Sale between 5-9 September.

Ferguson, who suffers from a lung condition, was in the throes of being weaned off some strong steroids by his doctor when he went out and made a name for himself at the National Yearling Sale. Unbeknown to him, one of the side effects of this process are feelings of invulnerability and euphoria.

He explained, “It is like having been at the Magic Millions bar all day and then deciding to buy some horses. It felt like a great idea at the time.”

All horses have been paid for by Ferguson and, while he admits that he expects to “take a haircut” on each filly when he reoffers them for sale next month, he can at least see the funny side to the episode.

Ferguson said, “It was just one of those things that happened. I'll probably end up famous because of it. I have had some feedback from a few good judges who have seen the horses and they tell me that there are some nice fillies in the group. So, I may not have done too bad a job.”

He added, “One of the vendors has already offered to buy their filly back at what we paid for her, as they felt she was sold too cheaply. I didn't accept the offer, as I want the sale to be fair and transparent. We bought 22, so all 22 will be re-offered.”

Since the National Sale, all fillies have registered at Di Hannel's Warrandale Stud at Biddaddaba. A vet will carry out a clinical and a laryngoscopy examination of each horse on arrival at the Magic Millions complex, and the reports of the vet's findings will be posted on the Magic Millions sale pages.

Ferguson has decided to offer each filly with a reserve of 50% of their recent purchase price.

He said, “Obviously it looks like I am going to show a loss, as I'm willing to take a haircut on each horse. But it was never my intention to own these horses. When I purchased these fillies I am sure I made a lot of vendors happy. This time around I will probably be making a lot of buyers happy.”

All of the fillies will be available for inspection at the Gold Coast Sales Complex from 9am to 4pm on Tuesday 6th to Thursday 8th and 9am until sale closes on Friday 9th.

Golden Horn’s Botanik To The Fore In The Grand Prix de Deauville

Godolphin's homebred 4-year-old gelding Botanik (Ire) (Golden Horn {GB}–Autumn Lily, by Street Cry {Ire}) took his record to six wins from 11 starts when annexing this month's G3 Prix de Reux going 12 1/2 furlongs at Deauville and doubled his stakes tally with a decisive victory in Sunday's G2 Lucien Barriere Grand Prix de Deauville over the same strip back on the Normandy coast. The 2020 G1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud runner-up had been on the fringes during a sophomore campaign, which yielded two wins from three starts last term, and broke alertly to hold an early lead before accepting a tow in second for most of this stamina test. Shaken up to close off the home turn, the 6-5 favourite was ridden to challenge the pacesetting Japanese raider Stay Foolish (Jpn) (Stay Gold {Jpn}) entering the final furlong and stayed on strongly under continued urging once hitting the front with 100 metres remaining to deny that rival by 1 1/4 lengths for a career-high triumph. Last term's Listed Prix de l'Avre victor Fenelon (Fr) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) tracked the leading duo throughout and finished best of the remainder, 4 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“He was a top 2-year-old and was then off for almost a year, but he has retained all his quality as his record indicates,” said rider Mickael Barzalona. “He was in very good form coming into the race after winning his prep race here earlier in the month. He was slightly keen early on, but the strong pace helped. He then settled nicely and won very well indeed at the end.”

Reflecting on the effort of this term's G2 Dubai Gold Cup victor Stay Foolish, connections' representative Yukihiko Araki added, “We are delighted with his run and not disappointed at all. The horse arrived in Europe only two weeks prior to this race and hadn't done much in between. His target is the [G1 Prix de l'] Arc [de Triomphe] and he will come back stronger and fitter for that.”

Botanik, one of his sire's two Group-race winners, is the second of five foals out of a multiple-winning half-sister to G1 Lockinge S. runner-up and G3 Prix de Cabourg-winning sire Alexandros (GB) (Kingmambo). The March-foaled bay's G1 Premio Roma-winning third dam High Hawk (Ire) (Shirley Heights {GB}) produced a quartet of Group winners by Sadler's Wells (Northern Dancer) headed by multiple Group 1-winning sire In The Wings (GB). High Hawk's half-sister High Tern (Ire) (High Line {GB}) is the dam of G1 Derby winner High-Rise (Ire) (High Estate {GB}) as well as being the second dam of G1 Oaks d'Italia heroine Zomaradah (GB) (Deploy {GB}). Zomaradah, of course, is the dam of Dubawi (Ire) (Dubai Millennium {GB}). Botanik's dam Autumn Lily (Street Cry {Ire}) has a 2-year-old filly by Shamardal and a yearling colt by Golden Horn (GB) to come.

Holy Roman Emperor’s Jadoomi Notches Goodwood Triumph

Coming back off an extended sabbatical, 2020's G1 Criterium International third Jadoomi (Fr) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}–South Sister {GB}, by Sakhee) registered a stakes breakthrough in last month's Listed Prix du Pays d'Auge at Clairefontaine when turning up for just his second outing in almost two years and continued on a rapid upward trajectory with victory in Saturday's G2 William Hill Celebration Mile at Goodwood. The 10-3 chance recovered from an early stumble and shadowed the pace in second for the most part. Scrubbed along to reduce arrears approaching the quarter-mile marker, he was unable to subdue stablemate Finest Sound (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) until late in the day and kept on relentlessly under continued rousting to deny that tenacious rival by a neck in the dying strides.

“Both of them ran a huge race, I'm absolutely delighted and couldn't be happier,” said trainer Ed Crisford. “Jadoomi loved that ground and just outstayed them at the very end. We've got races like the [G2] Prix Dollar on Arc weekend and he is also in the [G2] Boomerang S. at Leopardstown, so I think we'll just see how he is and go from there. He likes this softer ground, so I think we'll follow the rain.”

Jadoomi becomes the 53rd pattern-race winner for his sire (by Danehill) and the first for South Sister (GB) (Sakhee), herself a winning full-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains hero Tin Horse (Ire). He is kin to a 2-year-old colt by Gleneagles (Ire), a yearling filly by Shalaa (Ire) and a weanling colt by Invincible Spirit (Ire). Territories’s Hoo Ya Mal Snags Career-High Win At Goodwood

Acquired by connections for £1.2-million at Goffs' London sale in June, former Andrew Balding-trained G1 Derby runner-up Hoo Ya Mal (GB) (Territories {Ire}–Sensationally {GB}, by Montjeu {Ire}) celebrated a first victory in six starts since annexing York's Convivial Maiden last term with an impressive tally for trainer George Boughey in Saturday's G3 William Hill March S., staged in memory of John Dunlop, at Goodwood. The G1 St Leger, G1 Irish St Leger and G1 Melbourne Cup entry tanked forward to track the tempo in second after the initial exchanges of this 14-furlong marathon. Under wraps until shaken up soon after passing the two pole, the 3-10 favourite quickened to the fore approaching the final furlong and lengthened clear of Perfect Alibi (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) to defeat that pacesetting rival by 2 1/2 lengths in impressive fashion. Animato (GB) (Ulysses {Ire}) finished 6 1/2 lengths further adrift in third.

“The thing we learned was he was stepping up to 14 furlongs, which defies his pedigree,” said George Boughey. “William [Buick] said he's a horse who doesn't feel like he'll stay, but then he does stay. He has that class edge and on ratings he was expected to win, but he didn't do a huge amount today. I just wanted to see him relax and hit the line. It was softer ground and a trip he'd never run over before, so William was delighted and it's good to have ticked a box. It's pretty late at night or early morning in Australia and I'll speak to Gai [Waterhouse] and Adrian [Bott] on the way home. We'll let the dust settle and the [G1 St] Leger is the logical step for him.”

Hoo Ya Mal becomes the second pattern-race winner for his sire (by Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and the first for Sensationally (GB) (Montjeu {Ire}), who has six scorers from as many runners to her credit.
