Mehmas’s Minzaal Electrifies The Sprint Cup

Haydock missed the rain on Friday night and Saturday and so the depleted line-up for the feature G1 Betfair Sprint Cup needed a stimulant. It got that and then some in the form of Minzaal (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}), who came to the fore in scintillating fashion to become yet another in a long line of star sprinters operating in the Shadwell livery.

Looking ready for this career-defining moment when storming to success in Newbury's G3 Hackwood S. on a similarly fast surface over this six-furlong trip July 16, the 7-2 second favourite who had been second to Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in Deauville's G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest in the interim Aug. 7, was visually full of running covered up in mid-pack by Jim Crowley. Let loose approaching the final furlong, the Owen Burrows-trained 4-year-old piled it on to romp to a 3 3/4-length verdict over last year's winner Emaraaty Ana (GB) (Shamardal), who denied Rohaan (Ire) (Mayson {GB}) by a short head.

“That was impressive, but it's not a surprise because we've always held him in high regard,” Crowley said. “He won the Gimcrack at two and then he went wrong after that. He is a remarkable horse because he is so laid-back. He is like a boxer–literally the bell goes and he wakes up then. He is a real dude.

“He has been a bit slow away in the past, which has probably cost him a couple of races, but today he jumped nicely and they went a nice pace. I was always travelling very comfortably and as I got the split he was away and gone. He is equally effective on good-to-soft as he is on fast ground and the main aim would now be Champions Day, so we will try and nick another one with him.”

Having won the G2 Gimcrack S. and finished third in Newmarket's G1 Middle Park S. as a 2-year-old, Minzaal was off the track until Ascot's Listed Rous S. over five furlongs in early October and his effort when second there proved he had lost little effectiveness during his downtime. Third in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Sprint S. a fortnight later, he went into winter quarters with the chance of a clean run through the 2022 season and on his comeback ran into what looks to be the clear sprint division leader in Highfield Princess when third to her in the May 11 G2 1895 Duke Of York S. Apparently averse to cheekpieces when only 13th in the G1 Platinum Jubilee S. at the Royal meeting June 18, he was back in the groove without headgear in the Hackwood and Maurice de Gheest to set up this career-best.

Tracking the right rivals up the centre of the track in Flaming Rib (Ire) (Ribchester {Ire}) and Emaraaty Ana, the bay took a few strides to really engage top gear when brought between them approaching the furlong pole but stretched out willingly from there to forge a large opening on top-class opponents. The 3-1 market-leader Naval Crown (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) was disappointing as he beat only one of the 12 runners, with the five non-runners due to the fast ground including the leading contenders Kinross (GB) (Kingman {GB}) and Brad The Brief (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}).

Owen Burrows, whose record for Shadwell on big Saturdays is outstanding, was delighted his stable star had finally achieved what looked inevitable on that gloomy August day on York's Knavesmire two years ago. “He ran a big race in France last time and credit to Shaun his groom, who's been telling me that he's been in better form coming into this than he was for France and he was right. It was a big performance,” he said. “He's a pleasure to deal with, that's his one major attribute that he's got a temperament to die for as a sprinter. He's so laid-back about life, he just eats, sleeps and works and he's just lovely and a pleasure to train.”

“There was plenty of room so once he jumped and got a nice position behind the leaders–something which didn't quite materialise in France–I was happy and it's a massive performance,” he added. “I'm thrilled for him, he's been knocking on the door for some time and through no fault of his own he didn't get a chance last year to show what he can do and he's finally got to prove it. He'll go to Ascot next, all being well, Jim has been saying for most of the year that he'd appreciate a bit of juice but it didn't look that way just then!”

Emaraaty Ana's jockey Andrea Atzeni said, “He ran a blinder. It was very similar to last year in that he travelled beautifully through the race and when I let him down he really picked up for me, he just found one a bit too good on the day.”

Hollie Doyle said of Rohaan, “It was a great run and they went flat out, a lot quicker than at Newbury and I think that played into most of our strengths.”

Exceed And Excel’s Mischief Magic Impresses At Kempton

Back in the spotlight after administering a 6 1/2-length trouncing to overmatched rivals in a six-furlong novices' heat at Newmarket last month, Godolphin's homebred 2-year-old colt Mischief Magic (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}–Veil Of Silence {Ire}, by Elusive Quality) was in similarly destructive mood in Saturday's G3 Unibet 3 Uniboosts A Day Sirenia S. at Kempton. He had earlier debuted with a third behind subsequent G2 Richmond S. victor Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}) over Goodwood's sharp six furlongs in May before breaking through, tackling the same distance, at Newmarket towards the end of July in his penultimate start. The eventual winner was drawn widest of a reduced field of 10 and found a comfortable rhythm in rear, with just one behind, through halfway. Nudged along to close approaching the quarter-mile marker, the 11-5 favourite engaged turbo down the outside and powered by all but one of his rivals in impressive fashion to win, going away, by two lengths from Believing (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) for a career high.

“It was a great ride by Pat [Dobbs] and the horse is going the right way,” commented Charlie Appleby. “The [G1] Middle Park [at Newmarket] will be the next step all being well.” Dobbs added, “He didn't jump brilliantly so I didn't have much option but to drop in. I was always travelling, but when I gave him a squeeze there was plenty of horse left and we got there too soon. He's got a very good turn of foot and we picked them off quickly. He's got a good head on his shoulders, he's relaxed and will get seven furlongs. I'm not sure how far he can go, but he's definitely going in the right direction.”

Magic Mischief is the 10th of 11 foals and one of six scorers out of an unraced half-sister to three stakes performers, headed by G1 Racing Post Trophy hero Ibn Khaldun (Dubai Destination), and to the dam of G2 Park Hill S. victrix and G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. second Silk Sari (GB) (Dalakhani {Ire}). He is a full-brother to G3 Prix Eclipse victor Sound And Silence (GB) and a yearling filly. The February-foaled homebred bay's second dam, G1 Fillies' Mile and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Gossamer (GB) (Sadler's Wells), is one of six black-type performers produced by G1 Prix de la Foret victrix Brocade (GB) (Habitat) and thus a full-sister to G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and GI Breeders' Cup Mile-winning sire Barathea (Ire). Long Layoff No Problem For Frankel’s Triple Time in Superior Mile

Taking all of the money in this scratched-down field of four, Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Reem Three {GB}, by Mark Of Esteem {Ire}) did not let his backers down and ran home a handy winner of the G3 Best Odds On The Betfair Exchange Superior Mile S. at Haydock on Saturday. It was the first start of the year for the Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum homebred after he suffered an injury training up to the G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas in April.

A winner of a Haydock novice last August and the Listed Betfair Exchange Ascendant S. one day shy of a year ago Saturday, the Kevin Ryan runner was slowly away and raced last of the quartet as Marie's Diamond (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) cut out the running over the good to firm course. With a half-mile remaining, the latter was still on top, but Andrea Atzeni had the 13-8 favourite going through his gears and he began his bid in earnest, as Perotto (GB) (New Bay {GB}) took over from the frontrunner inside the final quarter mile. In front at the furlong pole, Triple Time fended off a late rally by Tacarib Bay (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) to win by 1 1/4 lengths for a new career high. Marie's Diamond was a half-length back in third, a short head in front of Perotto in fourth.

Ryan said of his one-time Guineas hope, “This is a very good horse, he's special. I was devastated when he had a setback before the Guineas, I thought he had a real chance. He'd actually done a great piece of work at Newmarket and came back with a bit of lameness. He had a little tiny stress fracture so we gave him lots of time.

“You can see he's a big horse and he got very heavy and this was a bit quick on him. I'd have loved to have had another fortnight and another gallop in the end but he's obviously very fresh and keen. They don't usually win races when they're doing that, he's a big talent.

“He's typical of a top-class horse, he's got an abundance of natural speed and you could probably run him over six furlongs. He'll probably end up getting 10 furlongs as he relaxes in his races, he was probably just a bit exuberant today.

“We're already thinking about next year, that's the thing with Sheikh Mohammed Obaid, he starts to plan and it didn't faze him at all [after the setback], he was always thinking about next year and he gave him as much time as he wanted. It's great to get him back.

“I think he could be very versatile as far as the ground is concerned, he's a very lightly-raced horse and I wouldn't mind running him on soft ground or quick ground. I'll have to discuss all of our options and we'll make a plan.”

Andrea Atzeni told ITV Racing, “That was very impressive really as he hadn't run since this meeting last year. We thought he was going to be a Guineas horse but he picked up an injury and that's why he has been off for so long.

“He has won on this ground before but would probably appreciate a bit more juice. He's a big-striding horse and when I let him down he picked up. He should come on for the race and is a nice horse. Having not run for a year, it was all about today and finding out if he still had it. It was a great training performance by Kevin and all the team to get the horse back here in top shape.”

The 72nd group winner for his sire, Triple Time's stakes-placed dam Reem Three enjoyed a busy day at the races with her progeny. Her juvenile Lope De Vega (Ire) colt, Captain Winters (GB), finished third in the aforementioned Listed Ascendant S. that Triple Time won in 2021. A little later on Saturday, the duo's 4-year-old half-brother Third Realm (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a dual listed winner and third in the G3 Gordon S., ran sixth in Kempton's G3 Unibet September S. Besides that trio, Reem Three also has G1 Prix Jean Romanet heroine Ajman Princess (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), the G3 Bengough S. victor Cape Byron (GB) (Shamardal), Ostilio (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), successful in the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein, and the G1 Prix Saint Alary third Imperial Charm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) to her credit. Her latest foals are a pair of fillies born in 2021 and 2022 by Kingman (GB) and Night Of Thunder, respectively.

Reem Three's half-brother Afsare (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) won the G2 Celebration Mile, as well as the G3 Sovereign S. and was runner-up in both the GI Arlington Million and the G1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica. Under the G1 French Oaks-winning fourth dam Dunette (Fr) (Hard to Beat {Ire}) is the GI Rothmans International H. victor French Glory (Ire) (Sadler's Wells).

Teofilo’s Naval Power Stretches Unbeaten Run

   Sent off at 1-3 to extend his winning sequence in Saturday's Listed Ascendant S. at Haydock, Naval Power (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) overcame some trouble in running to add to Charlie Appleby's enviable recent tally in juvenile black-type races. With the stable dominant in the G2 Gimcrack S., Listed Stonehenge S., G3 Solario S. and G3 Prestige S. in the past fortnight and soon to garner the G3 Sirenia S. later in the afternoon, any other result than an easy success for the 6 1/2-length Listed Pat Eddery S. winner would have been a major disappointment.

For a brief period inside the final three furlongs, that looked a possibility after William Buick had been intent on finding cover early and therefore found himself trapped in a pocket against the fence. As the leader Lion Of War (GB) (Roaring Lion) tired in front, Dancing Magic (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) held the homebred there until he was able to get out a furlong from home. From there, he readily drew away for an ultimately comfortable 1 1/4-length verdict over the latter.

Appleby has the G2 Royal Lodge S. at Newmarket as the next port of call for Naval Power and said, “That was another good learning day for him–Will got him into a nice box seat there and he's had to fight for his gap,” he said. “He brought experience into the race and the one thing I was pretty confident he was going to do was see it out well, so once the gap came his stamina came in and it kicked in at the right time. The plan if all had gone well today was to head to the Royal Lodge S. The Futurity Trophy would be talked about, but he's a horse that loves a sound surface so he's more likely to go for the Royal Lodge and if we're lucky enough to win that we'll put him away for next year.”

“On pedigree, he should be able to stretch out to a mile and a quarter and hopefully beyond but for a horse with that pedigree he has a lot of natural pace as well,” his trainer added. “He was very impressive at Ascot over the seven doing what he did and today was a different surface and he showed great courage and a bit of class. He's been hard to assess, as he's not a flashy worker and was leading a lot of the 2-year-olds early on. He's a straightforward horse who has done nothing but progress on the racetrack rather than at home.”

Naval Power, who beat the Gosdens' well-regarded Alzahir (Fr) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) on debut at Yarmouth May 26 before following up at Leicester June 23 and in Ascot's Pat Eddery on the King George card, is out of a daughter of the GI Spinster S. winner Asi Siempre (El Prado {Ire}) who produced the stable's GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf-winning sire Outstrip (GB) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}). The dam, who was bought by Blandford Bloodstock for just €18,000 at last year's Goffs November Breeding Stock Sale, has a yearling filly by Harry Angel (Ire) who proved a snip at only €11,000 when purchased by John Madigan at this year's Goffs February Sale. She also has a filly foal by Raven's Pass.
