Deauville Legend On Target For Melbourne Cup Bid

Deauville Legend (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a dual group winner in the UK this season, is firmly on course for the G1 Melbourne Cup Down Under in November and enters quarantine “a week on Monday” according to trainer James Ferguson. Second in Royal Ascot's King George V S. in June, the 3-year-old gelding franked that form with a narrow victory in the July 7 G3 Bahrain Trophy S. at Newmarket. Runner-up to the subsequently G1 Cazoo St Leger-placed New London (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) in Goodwood's G3 Gordon S. on July 28, the K K Ho colourbearer rebounded to win the G2 Great Voltigeur S. at York in mid-August.

“He's still on course for Melbourne,” said Ferguson. “He goes into quarantine a week on Monday and I think the form is working out very nicely. It is straight to Flemington.”

Mill Reef At The Centre Of Saturday Action

It is all about the 2-year-olds in Europe on Saturday, with Newbury's G2 Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef S. enjoying the prestige bragging rights. A week after celebrating Classic glory, KHK Racing, Roger Varian and David Egan combine again with the exciting 'TDN Rising Star' Sakheer (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}), who is a warm order following his six-length Haydock novice rout at the start of the month. “He has looked of good ability throughout the summer,” commented Varian, who also has Nurlan Bizakov's Charyn (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}). Clive Cox may have something to say about the outcome, having won this twice in the last six years including with Harry Angel (Ire), but Jason Goddard's Aug. 19 Salisbury novice scorer Heroism (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) has a leap to make. “He's a horse we have always liked and because of the exceedingly dry summer, he hadn't been on the grass since the spring when he won first time,” he said of the descendant of The Queen's Highclere (GB) and relative of Deep Impact (Jpn).

All About Me

Of the seven other group races across Britain and France on Saturday, three are for the juveniles with Ayr's Gold Cup meeting including the six-furlong G3 Virgin Bet Firth of Clyde Fillies' S. in which Jaber Abdullah's Aug. 18 G2 Lowther S. runner-up Queen Me (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) bids to continue the winning momentum for Kevin Ryan here. Ryan Moore heads to Chantilly to partner Ballydoyle's Victoria Road (Ire) (Saxon Warrior {Jpn}) in the G3 Prix de Conde over nine furlongs, with his mount in pole position having beaten the subsequent G3 Prix d'Aumale winner Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in Deauville's Listed Criterium du Fonds Europeen de l'Elevage Aug. 20. He may have most to fear from the Wertheimers' Precious Sea (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), a daughter of the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac heroine Indonesienne (Ire) (Muhtathir {GB}) who had the subsequent G2 Prix du Calvados scorer Wed (Fr) (Profitable {Ire}) back in second in a seven-furlong conditions event at La Teste de Buch July 13. In the six-furlong G3 Prix Eclipse, an intriguing contender is Stall Ritterbusch's impressive Aug. 4 Deauville winner Bodyman (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) from the Andreas Suborics stable.

Principles Of Animal Welfare In Ireland’s Horse Racing Industry Launched

A booklet, titled Principles of Animal Welfare in Ireland's Horse Racing Industry, was launched by Horse Racing Ireland on Friday. Created with input from people who work in a variety of roles in the horse racing and breeding industries in a co-design process, the booklet's objective was to put current best-practice science into language, principles and criteria which are real and coherent with four principles detailed as underpinning equine welfare in Ireland–Good Feeding, Good Housing, Good Health, and Good Well-being.

John Osborne, HRI's Director of Equine Welfare and Bloodstock, said, “We had robust discussions with a large and diverse group of industry participants which was very productive. Our core objective is to be in a position to verify that the standards of care for our horses are high and measurable.

“We should not take for granted what some might call the basics, but which are in essence the cornerstones of a good welfare profile for any horse. We have a responsibility to our horses, and everyone plays a part in delivering a good life to the centrepieces of our industry.”

The booklet is available in soft copy on the HRI's website and from HRI's Equine Welfare division, email Siobhan at sgriffin@hri.ie.

Paddy Walsh to Retire as Chief Executive of AIR

Paddy Walsh, the chief executive of the Association of Irish Racecourses, is to step down from his role early next year after two decades at the held.

AIR is an independent, not-for-profit entity which represents those who own and operate Ireland's 26 racecourses. He will retire in March 2023.

He said, “I will be officially retiring on March 31, 2023. In the interim, there are a few months of important work ahead of us. In order to find the best possible candidate for the position, we have decided to make this announcement sooner rather than later and get the recruitment process started well in advance of my departure.”

Following receipt of proposals from executive recruitment firms, Principal Connections (www.principalconnections.ie) has been appointed by the Association of Irish Racecourses to handle the search for their next chief executive.

Principal Connections is part of Agilium Worldwide LLC, ranked one of the world's top global executive search groups. It is intended that the position will be advertised in the media and on the AIR website in the coming weeks.
