‘Yell’ing With Joy As Group 1 Action Returns To Japan With Sprinters S.

On hiatus for the past several months, Group 1 action returns to the Land of the Rising Sun in Nakayama's 1200-metre Sprinters S. on Sunday. Sixteen horses have stood their ground, among them last out G2 Sankei Sho Centaur S. heroine Meikei Yell (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}). Leaving from gate 13, the 4-year-old filly and 2-1 morning line pick is aiming to become the first horse to complete the Centaur/Sprinters S. double since Tower Of London (Jpn) (Raven's Pass) in 2019. Trained by Hidenori Take, the Nagoya Keibo Co. Ltd colourbearer will have Kenichi Ikezoe in the irons.

Assistant trainer Kaname Ogino said, “Everything went to plan in her last race, and the jockey got the best out of her. She has returned to training again and seems relaxed, which is a good thing. There doesn't seem to be any change in her condition.”

 

Brilliance Their Stock In Trade

Something of a novelty in Japan, Sunday Racing's German-bred Schnell Meister (Ger) (Kingman {GB}), who scored his Group 1 win in the G1 NHK Mile Cup in 2021 and was runner-up in the G1 Yasuda Kinen all the way back in June, will fly the flag for his Juddmonte sire. Connections did take a gamble and send him to Dubai to start his season in March, but it did not pay off. Half a world away, others looking to give their Juddmonte sire a fruitful weekend at the highest level include 'TDN Rising Stars' Habana (Ger) (G1 Qatar Prix Marcel Boussac, 1400mT), and Kinross (GB) (G1 Qatar Prix de la Foret, 1400mT) on Arc Day. The day prior, fellow Rising Star Laurel (GB) and Mrs Fitzherbert (Ire) go to the post in Newmarket's one-mile G1 Royal Bahrain Sun Chariot S. for the 11-year-old, who sits ninth on the TDN Europe General Sires List this year. A victory by the 4-year-old entire at Nakayama would nudge Kingman up to seventh, after the $1,198,977 was added to his progeny earnings.

Trainer Takahisa Tezuka said, “His condition wasn't so good after Dubai, even though he did manage to finish second in the Yasuda Kinen. After his usual summer break at Northern Farm Tenei, he returned to the stable early in September. He looks his usual self, if not a little bigger, but has moved well enough in recent work.”

 

Age Before Beauty?

Second choice is Mutsuhiro Namura homebred Namura Clair (Jpn) (Mikki Isle {Jpn}) at 3-1, who sneaks into the field under a flyweight of just 117 pounds. Classic-placed over 1600 metres in the G1 Japanese 1000 Guineas this spring, the June 12 G3 Hakodate Sprint S. victress was third over this trip in the G3 TV Nishinippon Corp. Sho Kitakyushu Kinen on Aug. 21.

If she prevails, she would be the sixth Group or Grade 1 winner tracing to 1993 G1 Prix Morny/G1 Prix de la Salamandre heroine and blue hen Coup De Genie (Mr. Prospector) and first in Japan. Appropriately considering the international stakes on offer this weekend, one of that sextet, the now Japanese-based sire Bago (Fr) (Nashwan), claimed the 2004 G1 Prix de l'Arc de Tromphe among his many Group 1 victories.

Trainer Kodai Hasegawa said, “She has had a break at the farm with this race in mind. She has recovered well, and has been able to handle her training workload since. It has also been good to have had some time between races.”

Soumillon Handed Two-Month Ban After Elbowing Ryan Out Of Saddle  

Christophe Soumillon, one of the most decorated riders in the world, has been handed a two-month ban after elbowing fellow jockey Rossa Ryan out of the saddle at Saint-Cloud on Friday.

The Belgian native was riding Syros for Francis Graffard in the Group 3 Prix Thomas Bryon Jockey Club de Turquie when making contact with Ryan, who was aboard the Ralph Beckett-trained Captain Wierzba.

In what looked a deliberate elbow, Soumillon edged Ryan out of the saddle and, while he denied any malice to the incident, apologies on At The Races afterwards by saying it was “not a nice act” and that he had made “a misjudgement”.

Syros went on to finish second but was disqualified by the French stewards who gave Soumillon his lengthy ban. The rider will be free to ride on Arc weekend at ParisLongchamp as the two-month ban does not come into effect until next week.

 

“I received a little bit of pressure from Rossa's mount on my outside trying to get a better position behind Ryan,” Soumillon said. “I was just behind Ryan at the time. And I put my elbow against him just to make him understand I wasn't going to the inside and unfortunately when I asked my horse to stay there and go a little bit to the right, I pushed him for one stride or two and he fell off.

“Straight away, I knew, I'd made a mistake. I'm terribly sad with what happened because I hate seeing stuff like this and when you are doing that it's even more terrible, so I want to apologise to everyone, not just only one person who owns the horse or trains the horse or even the jockey.”

He added: “I just saw him [Ryan] now and he's fine and the horse too so I'm happy for that, but for all the people loving racing it was not a nice act from my side and I am terribly sorry and I want to apologise for what I did today.

“I just received a big suspension from the France-Galop stewards. I'm going to be suspended for two months – 60 days of racing. So that's a very big thing. So unfortunately my end-of-season is now gone. But I accept the sentence for what I did, for the terrible mistake like I said.

“And for sure that sentence is an example to others then that's acceptable but for sure, I shouldn't do that. I didn't do it on purpose to make him fall off his horse. I was just trying to keep my position. But with the ground … I probably did with a little power. It was a misjudgment from my side.

“I wasn't trying to make him fall off his horse. Unfortunately he was side by side with me, his iron goes up and he goes over the horse. I don't really understand what happened in that moment because it's going really fast but it's a terrible thing for what I did. I know a lot of people are not going to excuse me, but I feel really bad at the moment for what happened.”

Ryan reported that he and his mount were fine after the incident. He said, “The horse is fine, I'm fine. That's the main thing. I'm 100 per cent.”

Pattern Race Success For Heart’s Cry In France

Aidan O'Brien trainee Continuous (Jpn) (Heart's Cry {Jpn}–Fluff {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) notched a landmark score for his sire (by Sunday Silence) when snagging an Aug. 20 maiden over seven furlongs at the Curragh and maintained his perfect record with a battling success in a controversial renewal of Friday's one-mile G3 Prix Thomas Bryon Jockey Club du Turquie at Saint-Cloud. The eventual winner occupied a slot behind the leaders in third and was safely clear of trouble to his outer when British challenger Captain Wierzba (GB) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) parted company with Rossa Ryan at halfway, the rider having been shoved from his mount by Christophe Soumillon aboard Syros (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}). Rowed along to reduce arrears soon after turning for home, the 2-1 favourite Continuous was ridden to go second approaching the final furlong and kept on strongly under urging in the latter stages to prevail by 3/4-of-a-length from the subsequently demoted Syros. Soumillon was sanctioned with a 60-day ban Oct. 14 through Dec. 12) for dangerous riding, but will be permitted to take his booked rides at ParisLongchamp this weekend.

“It was a very good performance for a horse who had just run once to win a maiden,” commented Coolmore representative Hermine Bastide. “Aidan [O'Brien} was quite confident he would have no problems staying the distance. Looking at his pedigree on his dam's side, it suggested he'd be capable of handling soft going and Ryan [Moore] said the ground was okay for him. Aidan will talk to the owners and he could come back here for the [Oct. 22 G1] Criterium International.”

Continuous, half-brother to a yearling filly by Lord Kanaloa (Jpn) and a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett {GB}), is the third of five foals and one of two scorers out of a winning full-sister to G1 Moyglare Stud S. heroine Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}, herself the dam of G1 2000 Guineas-winning sire Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). The March-foaled bay's dam is also a full-sister to dual Group 1-placed G3 Silver Flash S. victrix Promise To Be True (Ire). His stakes-winning second dam Sumora (Ire) (Danehill) is kin to G1 Oaks and G1 Preis der Diana (German Oaks) heroine Dancing Rain (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) from the family of multiple Group 1-winning sire Dr Devious (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}).

Ten Sovereigns Filly Fetches Record €300,000 At Sportsman’s Sale 

More records were broken at the Goffs Sportsman's Sale on Thursday as David Ryan went to €300,000, the highest price ever paid for a yearling at this sale, to secure a Ten Sovereigns (Ire) filly (lot 713) on behalf of Rabbah Bloodstock from Abbeville Stud.

Trade sky-rocketed at the Orby Sale on Tuesday and Wednesday and the opening session of the two-day Sportsman's Sale at Goffs was much the same.

Of the 245 yearlings offered, 217 found new homes, representing a clearance rate of 89%. However, what was most impressive was the amount traded, with the €6,094,500 that exchanged hands through the ring representing a 54% increase on last year's turnover.

The average and the median were also up. The average was €28,085, a 32% increase on last year, while the median was up 50% to €24,000.

Haunting Melody (Ire) (Danetime {Ire}), sold here in 2007 for €240,000, was the most expensive horse sold at the Sportsman's Sale prior to Thursday.

Despite having to pay a record price for the Ten Sovereigns filly, Ryan, manager at Kilfrush Stud, revealed the sum was pretty much where he expected to go.

He said, “She's for Rabbah Bloodstock and will come back to the farm in Kilfrush before we decide who trains.”

Ryan added, “She really should have been in the Orby as she was a standout on the day. Especially the way the fillies were selling in the Orby.

“I know that Ten Sovereigns is a first-season sire and is unproven but it has worked before with No Nay Never. She was always going to make good money.”

 

Foley Lights The Touch Paper

The Sportsman's picked up pretty much where the Orby left off when Joe Foley went to €62,000 to bag the first horse through the ring, the Newlands House Stud-drafted Bungle Inthejungle (GB) brother (lot 521) to black-type performer Funny Money Honey (Ire), on behalf of The Bronte Collection.

Foley, who has been one of the biggest players on the European yearling sale circuit so far this season and spent over €1 million on eight horses at the Orby, also revealed the colt would be trained by Karl Burke.

Foley said, “He has been bought for the Bronte Collection. I bought the Lowther S. winner Living In The Past (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) off Paddy Burns and I'm delighted to be able to go back to him. I liked the cross and he looks fast. He'll be trained by Karl Burke, who also trained Living In The Past.”

The proud Carlow man went on to snap up a Le Brivido (Fr) filly (lot 633) from Churchtown House Stud for €42,000 later in the afternoon.

 

Gladwell Still Going Strong

Those hoping to make hay while the Americans were away suffered something of a blow when Torie Gladwell, who picked up two yearlings at the Orby, remained for the long haul and added a colt by Invincible Army (Ire) (lot 535) and a filly by Ten Sovereigns (lot 653) for €70,000 apiece.

All of Gladwell's additions, signed for under the banner of Top Line Sales, will return to Ocala Florida, where she is based, with the long-term plan being to prepare them for a breeze-up sale.

She said, “We bought two in the Orby and two today and all will come back to America to breeze. We came to Europe to get a sportier, earlier type of horse. The Invincible Army colt is nice and, with the filly, we thought that she would mix well with the American bloodlines in time.”

Top Line Sales secured a Calyx filly (lot 8) for €85,000 and a Cable Bay filly (lot 339) for €100,000 in the Orby Sale and Gladwell's business in the Sportsman's took her total spend to €325,000.

 

Condon Comes Up Trumps For Territories Filly

In G1 Prix de l'Abbaye-bound Teresa Mendoza (Ire), Ken Condon has one of the best progeny of Territories (Ire) in his stable, and the Curragh-based trainer added another filly (lot 702) by the Dalham Hall-based stallion to his string for €80,000.

Consigned by Hollyhill Stud, the Territories filly ranked highly on Condon's list, and the trainer's confidence was boosted by the fact one of the most respected judges in racing was the underbidder.

He said, “Territories is a sire we're obviously very familiar with and Teresa Mendoza will run in France this weekend. She came well-recommended and is from a good nursery but she recommended herself.”

Condon added, “She's a very nice type. She has a bit of substance to her and has a lovely attitude. You'd take great heart from the fact that such a good judge like Kevin Prendergast was the underbidder.”

 

Dubai Calling?

Progeny of Catholic Boy in Europe are just about as rare as hen's teeth and lot 556, a colt by the dual American Grade I winner who stands for $20,000 at Claiborne Farm, was knocked down for €65,000 to top breeze-up consignors Mick and Sarah Murphy of Longways Stables.

Gerry Hogan signed for the colt, who was consigned by Arglo House Stud, and he boasted one of the more interesting pedigrees on day one at the Sportsman's.

Given his page, one would wonder if the colt, out of maiden mare by Muhaarar (GB) and from the family of multiple black-type performers in America, could rock up at the Goffs Dubai Breeze-Up Sale next March. Watch this space.
