Juvenile Group 1 Heroine The Platinum Queen Added To Tattersalls December

Group 1 winner The Platinum Queen (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}) (lot1924B) will be offered as a wildcard entry during the Tattersalls December Mares Sale. Successful in the G1 Prix de l'Abbaye, the bay will be sent through the ring during the second Sceptre Session on Nov. 29. The first Group 1-winning juvenile filly to be offered during the Tattersalls December Mares Sale this century, she was also the first of her age and sex to take the l'Abbaye since Sigy (Fr) (Habitat) in 1978.

The Middleham Park Racing runner was bred by Tally-Ho Stud, who stands her sire, the G3 Trophy S. victor Cotai Glory. Offered by Tally-Ho at the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze-Up Sale, Middleham Park purchased the February foal and sent her to trainer Richard Fahey, where she won on debut at Ripon. A winner at York and Goodwood in July, she ran second to Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) in the G1 Nunthorpe S., and filled that position again in the G2 Flying Childers S. prior to her l'Abbaye victory. This is the extended family of group winner Tiger Royal (Ire) (Royal Academy).

Tom Palin of Middleham Park Racing said, “The Platinum Queen's breeze at the Rowley Mile back in April was unbelievably impressive and we were determined to buy her. She has been an absolute superstar for Middleham Park Racing ever since, taking us everywhere including Royal Ascot, Glorious Goodwood, the Ebor Meeting at York and ultimately to Group 1 glory in the Abbaye on Arc day at Longchamp where she achieved something which has not been done in more than 40 years. The Platinum Queen really is a special filly, a credit to Richard Fahey and the whole team at Musley Bank, and she has the physical scope to develop into an equally outstanding 3-year-old.”

Saxon Warrior Leads The Way At Goffs November Foal Sale 

Helped in no small part by the success of Victoria Road (Ire) at the Breeders' Cup and Auguste Rodin's (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}) emergence as a leading Classic contender from the same sire line, the progeny of Saxon Warrior (Jpn) played a starring role on day one of the November Foal Sale at Goffs.

Not only did Saxon Warrior top the session when Ballyhimikin Stud signed for a colt [lot 231] drafted by Kildallan Farm for €88,000, but he was also responsible for three of the top four foals on the day. 

The Monday session-topper is out of an unraced sister to black-type performer Impendor (Ire) (Holy Roman Emperor {Ire}) and led home a cracking days's trade for the Coolmore-based stallion who, off the back of an excellent debut season with his two-year-olds, had his 2023 fee increased to €35,000.

The second most expensive Saxon Warrior through the ring on the day was a colt [lot 78] from  Collegelands Stud who was knocked down to KCS Bloodstock for €65,000. 

He is out of an unraced New Approach (Ire) mare who has produced two winners from two runners; El C Wells (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}) and Wohileh (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}).

Ciara Carty of KCS Bloodstock said, “He's a nice colt and stood out today. He's got plenty going for him, he's from a nice pedigree and he's by a sire who has done well and is going to have global appeal going forward. This colt will be back for sale next autumn.” 

Rochestown Lodge Stud's colt [lot 135] by the sire sold for €62,000 and will chart a similar path with the yearling sales next autumn the ultimate aim. 

Marie McCartan of Ballyphillip said of the big-walking chestnut out of the dual winner Zagharit (Ire) (Sir Percy {GB}), “We're delighted to get him. He's a really nice horse and will come back to the sale next year. Saxon Warrior having the Breeders' Cup winner was a big help.”

Four colts by Saxon Warrior sold for an aggregate of €260,000 at an average of €65,000 at Goffs on Monday.

The overall trade was also strong. The aggregate was up 3% to €3,529,000 and the average also rose 6% to €20,399 while the median fell by 3% to €15,000. 

Stauffenberg A Dandy Man Fan

Philipp Stauffenberg signed up to the Dandy Man (Ire) fan club by snapping up a filly and a colt by the Ballyhane-based stallion as well as an Advertise (GB) filly on the day. 

But it was the lot 162, the Dandy Man filly out of Astonished (Ire), a dual winner by Sea The Stars (Ire), who led the way for the leading pinhooker at €85,000. 

On that purchase, he said, “She was one of the best physicals of the day. Joe Foley bought the half-sister by Night Of Thunder (Ire) for €160,000, so there's every chance that there will be an update there.”

Forenaghts Stud brought a small, but select draft to Goffs this week and manager Caoimhe Doherty revealed that the whole team was over the moon with the sale of the Dandy Man filly. 

She said, “We are thrilled. We thought she'd sell well but we didn't think she'd sell as well as she did. She was bought by a brilliant judge and underbid by another top judge in Joe Foley. 

“For her to make €85,000 is really beyond what we could have hoped for. We brought two very nice foals to Goffs this week so we're thrilled with how the week has begun.”

 

 

 

The second foal to sell under the Forenaghts Stud banner is a Starspangledbanner (Aus) [lot 710] who goes through the ring on Wednesday.

The Dandy Man colt was consigned by Kellsgrange Stud and sold for €55,000. Out of an unraced daughter of Camacho (GB), he hailed from a good family, with his granddam Miss Philllyjinks (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) producing G1 Prix Marcel Boussac winner Tiger Tanaka (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}).

It has been a memorable year for Stauffenberg with his pinhooks. At Book 1 at Tattersalls alone, Stauffenberg Bloodstock sold five yearlings for 2,345,000gns, including a 550,000gns Night Of Thunder filly who was knocked down to Godolphin. 

Asked how he was planning on reinvesting at Goffs this week, he joked, “Hopefully wisely! We will know next year if it was wise or not.”

On buying the Advertise filly [lot 62] out of a dual-winning Dark Angel (Ire) mare [Prying Pandora (Fr)] earlier on in the day, he added, “The Advertise filly was lovely as well. She was a little bit light on the page but she was a very nice physical and we are hoping that Advertise will do something next year. I think we got one of the best physicals by Advertise.”

Doyle Delighted With King Of Change Colt

Ross Doyle paid a handsome tribute to King Of Change (GB), a horse the leading bloodstock agent knows well–given he won the G1 QEII on British Champions Day for Richard Hannon–after he secured a colt [lot 102] by the first-season sire for €50,000. 

King Of Change recently made the move to Micheál Orlandi's Starfield Stud in County Westmeath and Doyle described himself as being impressed with the first foals he has seen by the stallion. 

On lot 102, he said, “Peter [Doyle, the agent's partner and father] and Flash Conroy bought him and the plan will be to resell him as a yearling. He was as nice a foal as we saw here at Goffs today–a good physical with a very good walk.”

Doyle added, “Richard Hannon held King Of Change in very high regard, which is a big help. We have seen some nice foals by the sire. They are very nice types.”

Three of the four foals by King Of Change sold for an aggregate of €85,000 and averaged at €28,333. 

Arizona Off To A Solid Start

Some of the first foals by Arizona (Ire) were well-received with Peter Nolan snapping up a colt [lot 201] by the 2019 G2 Coventry S. winner for €60,000.

The Castlebridge Consignment also sold a colt by the stallion earlier in the day for €35,000 to Paula Flannery which went some way to cementing a rock-solid trade for the newbie, with six foals selling for an average of €25,500.

Nolan's purchase is a half-brother to the speedy Eldrickjones (Ire) (Cotai Glory {GB}), who reached a rating of 104 in his juvenile year, and the plan will be to re-offer the colt as a yearling. 

He said, “We just thought that the mare had produced two good ones by Pride Of Dubai (Aus) [three-time winner Moddy Puddle (Ire)] and Cotai Glory. He's a big, fine, good-looking colt and the stock looks good by the sire. They're nice. He'll be for re-sale.”

Yeomanstown Team Hope Shaman Can Lay Down Marker At Goffs

Dark Angel (Ire) and Invincible Army (Ire) may not be the only exciting stallions at Yeomanstown Stud with David O'Callaghan outlining his hopes that Shaman (Ire) can lay down a marker at Goffs this week when some of the Group 2-winning son of Shamardal's first foals go through the ring.

A colt foal by Shaman fetched €22,000 at the inaugural Tattersalls Ireland Sapphire Sale on Saturday and O'Callaghan thinks the best is yet to come from a sire who is due to have 22 foals go through the ring over the next four days at Goffs. 

It was at this sale last year where Yeomanstown enjoyed a fruitful start with Invincible Army. The Group 3-winning juvenile, whose first runners will hit the track next year, averaged a respectable €34,350 for 20 foals sold. 

Top of that list was Ballyduane Stud's colt by the sire who was knocked down to top judges Peter and Ross Doyle for €85,000. That same colt was then re-sold at Book 1 at Tattersalls last month for 100,000gns to leading breeze-up handler Robson Aguiar. 

O'Callaghan is hoping for a similarly fast start with Shaman, and said, “Goffs is always an interesting sale for the first-season sires-it's where they get to lay down a marker. We'll get an idea into how the progeny of the first-season sires will be received for the rest of the year this week. We have some very good Shaman foals at home and I hope that the ones at Goffs are similar. If they are, it will set a good benchmark. I think people will like them.”

He added, “Last year, Invincible Army had a good sale at Goffs. One after the other, they were like peas in a pod. People seemed to fall in love with the idea of using Invincible Army and followed them the whole way through to the yearling sales this year. We'd be hoping that something similar can happen with Shaman. He breeds nice horses so hopefully he can get the ball rolling.”

Shaman was bred and raced by the Wertheimer family. He won five times in France for Carlos Laffon-Parias, the highlight coming in the Group 2 Prix d'Harcourt at ParisLongchamp where he had Way To Paris (GB) and subsequent Arc winner Sottsass (Fr) behind him. 

He also showed enough precocity to win his maiden over seven furlongs on debut as a juvenile and won a Group 3 and was twice a runner-up at the highest level as a three-year-old. 

For those reasons, O'Callaghan says that he thinks Shaman, who will stand for €5,000 next season, has been priced fairly and is backing him to be a success. 

“He covered over 100 mares in his first crop. People bought into the idea of him. He went in at small money, standing at just €6,000, but he is a very good-looking horse by Shamardal and won a Group 2 over a mile-and-a-quarter and is multiple Group 1-placed.” 

O'Callaghan added, “He has an excellent pedigree. He was just shy of being a top-class racehorse and was priced appropriately. Between his physical, his sire and his damsire, and his race record, there's no reason why he won't make it. He ticked an awful lot of boxes without winning a Group 1. He has a lot going for him so fingers crossed.”

With El Kabeir sold to join the stallion ranks in Italy, Yeomanstown's four-strong roster for 2023 is completed by G1 Middle Park S. winner Supremacy (Ire), whose first foals will arrive next year. That's not to say that the O'Callaghans have not been trying to add to that roster.

O'Callaghan explained, “El Kabeir was literally just sold last week. It's very hard to buy stallions. The reason is not just got to do with the marketplace but also it comes down to who owns these top-class horses. The way it worked out this year, Shadwell and Godolphin had control of pretty much all of the stallion prospects. On top of that, the Aga Khan had Vadeni (Fr) (Churchill {Ire}) and it was a rare year where Coolmore did not have any top three-year-olds to retire. They had Luxembourg (Ire) but he is staying in training. It was a rare year with nothing in independent hands.”

He added, “You could say that we are somewhat victims of our own success at times. It's important for us that there is a strong market when it comes to selling yearlings but, when the big boys buy these horses, like Shadwell and Godolphin have been doing for years, then they are the ones who get to reap the rewards with the stallion prospects. They breed a lot and they buy a lot. The big outfits have control of all the top horses and they deserve to because of all the investment that they put into the game. It just means that there are less and less of these potential stallion prospects to go around for independent stallion farms like ourselves. We are always looking but there was nothing on our radar this year.”

One stallion the O'Callaghans will be hoping can continue for many more years to come is Dark Angel (Ire), who at the age of 17, sired his first Classic winner this season courtesy of French 1,000 Guineas winner Mangoustine (Fr). 

“God bless him. He has quite a lot of foals in the next couple of weeks and we'll buy a few of them ourselves. Hopefully they sell well for their breeders. He's had another great year with a top five finish in Europe and he's just uber-consistent. He's been in the top five sires list in Europe for the past eight years and hopefully he will keep going that way. 

“He's rock solid and gets good two, three and four-year-olds, sprinters, milers, colts and fillies, it doesn't really matter. He's just a great sire. He is 17 years of age but looks better than ever. He doesn't shuttle and he's very fertile so he has an easy life. He spends his summer out in the field with the cattle and comes in at the end of October to get ready for the season.”

Dark Angel will be represented by 21 foals at Goffs this week while fellow Yeomanstown Stud-based sire Invincible Army has a massive representation of 30. The sale kicks off at 10am on Monday.

French Gaming Police Ask For Soumillon’s Licence To Be Withdrawn “Indefinitely” Or That His Ban Be Lengthened

According to information obtained by Jour de Galop, France's Gaming Police mailed a letter to France Galop earlier this week requesting that suspended jockey Christophe Soumillon's licence be withdrawn indefinitely or that his ban be lengthened, the paper writes in its Sunday edition. Soumillion was suspended for two months after elbowing fellow jockey Rossa Ryan out of the saddle during the running of the G3 Prix Thomas Bryon on Sept. 30.

“The fall (of Rossa Ryan) was not accidental, but was caused by Christophe Soumillon. This behavior is voluntary and dangerous,” the Gaming Police writes in the letter, according to the JDG. They report that the letter goes on to say that in May, they had asked Soumillion to modify his behavior, which they described as “risky” for other jockeys. “Instead,” the letter reads, “the deliberate, dangerous behavior of Mr. Soumillon, in the middle of the race and at a high speed in the stretch, presents a serious risk to the public order within horse racing.”

The JDG reports that the letter goes on to say that the incident garnered international attention, which portrayed French racing in a bad light. The police ask that France Galop either increase his suspension to a maximum of six months, or to withdraw his license altogether pending further investigation. The Jour de Galop notes that they have followed the same procedure used to ban jockey Pierre-Charles Boudot this past Tuesday.
