Statistics Reflect Steady Growth In Irish Racing And Breeding

Most key statistics for the Irish Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry showed significant gains when compared to the pre-pandemic year of 2019, as the full-year statistics were released by Horse Racing Ireland (HRI) on Thursday.

In the areas of ownership (+17.1%, 4,757), horses-in-training (10,208, +14.1% on 2019), Tote betting (total Tote betting rose +18.3%), and bloodstock sales (€215.4m, +30.3% on 2019 and +17.8% on 2021), figures are well over 2019's. Owner retention rate is now 72.8%, with the number of syndicates increasing for the fourth consecutive year to 825 (+3.4% on 2021 and +24.2% on 2019). 2022 fixtures decreased to 388 from a record of 394 in 2021, but the first half of 2021 saw a readjustment to accommodate point-to-pointers on the racecourse. Suzanne Eade, CEO of Horse Racing Ireland, said, “A strong and stable racing industry reflects well on rural communities in every county on the island and a key driver of our success is the number of horses-in-training which leads directly to employment in the country's racing yards. While the overall number is down slightly on 2021, the figure of 10,208 is well ahead of the 2019 figure which bodes well as we start into a new year.

“Almost seven out of every 10 runners in Ireland (69.8%) won prize-money in Ireland in 2022, 5,686 horses in total, and that's the highest number we've ever reported in this category. It's an important indicator for us because we acknowledge the incredible loyalty displayed by owners to Irish racing during the Covid pandemic.

“While the cost of living continues to be an issue for all industries, we can be confident heading into 2023 that racing remains extremely popular in Ireland with attendances rallying strongly in the second half of 2022. Attracting more than nine out of every 10 people that went racing before the pandemic, back to the racecourse, is a tribute to the work put in by the tracks. It was encouraging to see such strong end-of-year crowds at Navan for Troytown Day and at Fairyhouse for the Drinmore meeting, at Naas, Punchestown and Down Royal to name just a few, and of course a very strong performance at the Leopardstown Christmas Festival. 2023 got off to a great start with an incredible day at a well attended Tramore.

“A number of strong public auctions helped push the overall bloodstock sales figure past the €200m figure for the first time and a return of €215.4m is 30.3% ahead of the 2019 figure and 17.8% up on 2021.”

Unique A’Ali Breeding Incentive Announced

A unique breeding incentive for multiple group winner A'Ali (Ire) was announced by Newsells Park Stud on Thursday.

Any breeders that send mares to the three-time Group 2 juvenile victor this breeding season will be entered into a prize draw to win two tickets to the G1 Dubai World Cup on Mar. 25, the Wimbledon Ladies' Singles Final on July 15, or the Oct. 28 Rugby World Cup Final in Paris.

Besides his Norfolk S. score, the son of the late Society Rock (Ire) also captured the G2 Prix Robert Pain and G2 Flying Childers S. at two. He then added both the G2 Sapphire S. and G3 Sprint S. at three and was third in the G2 Meydan Sprint as a 4-year-old. He stands for £5,000 Oct. 1 SLF. For more details on the breeding incentives to utilise A'Ali, please visit the Newsells Park Stud website.

Newsells Park Stud General Manager Julian Dollar, said, “A'Ali's partners were keen to highlight what a great sporting chance a mare had of producing quality, fast and precocious winners if she was covered by one of the fastest and most precocious sprinters of recent years. And what better way to do that than by offering great sporting prizes to the breeders themselves?  Not only could your mare be visiting the next Ardad (Ire) or Havana Grey (GB), but you could also be attending a memorable sports final.”

  • 25: Saudi Cup – King Abdulaziz Racecourse in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

  • May 20: Lockinge S. Day – Newbury Racecourse, UK
  • July 2: Irish Derby Day – the Curragh, Ireland
  • July 2: Deutsches Derby Day – Hamburg-Horn, German

The World Pool Moment of the Year has been extended to all global World Pool meetings and will reward stable staff with a total of over HK$1 million (approx. £103,000) in prizes, as well as a VIP trip to Hong Kong, thanks to additional funding from the HKJC, UK Tote Group, Racecourse Media Group (RMG) and Ascot Racecourse. For more information, please visit the World Pool website for more.

Michael Fitzsimons, Executive Director Wagering Products of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, said, “We were absolutely thrilled with the results from our 21 World Pool meetings in 2022 and are excited to be extending that offering to 25 days this year.

“Having Australia and Saudi Arabia on the fixture list of 2023 World Pool meetings is another important step in the globalisation of World Pool, while adding some high-profile British and Irish meetings to the schedule is another exciting advancement.

“To complement our expanding list of World Pool meetings are the Moment of the Day and Moment of the Year initiatives, which for the first time will reward winning stable staff from all countries hosting World Pool races.

“Last year's launch of the competition in the UK and Ireland was met with great feedback from yards across the region and we look forward to opening that up to our World Pool days in South Africa, Australia, Saudi Arabia and Dubai.”

Alex Frost, Chief Executive of the UK Tote Group, said, “We are looking forward to another World Pool season which now extends its reach across eight countries worldwide. For the UK and Ireland, it is welcome to see new additions to this year's schedule, with two races from Newbury's Lockinge Day added, along with Irish Derby Day, taking World Pool events hosted in the UK and Ireland to a total of 18.

“The ambitions for a global wagering platform are already being realised with over 20 pool betting operators now part of World Pool. Last year alone, the UK and Ireland saw record turnover of £521 million across 17 World Pool events, showcasing the best of our racing to a global audience, ensuring an improved value proposition for our own wagering customers and creating a more sustainable funding mechanism for horseracing in the future, with additional income for our racecourse partners.

“Our continued thanks go to our partners the Hong Kong Jockey Club, and in collaboration with RMG and Ascot, we are delighted to see Moment of the Day and Moment of the Year now extended to include all countries hosting World Pool races.”
