Lonsdale On Point In The Huxley

Coolmore and Westerberg's 575,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling and 'TDN Rising Star' Point Lonsdale (Ire) (Australia {GB}–Sweepstake {Ire}, by Acclamation {GB}) made a winning seasonal return in last month's G3 Alleged S. at the Curragh, having been on the shelf for almost a year after running seventh in last term's G1 2000 Guineas, and added to his tallies in 2021's G3 Tyros S. and G2 Futurity S. with a battling effort in Friday's G2 IRE-Incentive It Pays To Buy Irish Huxley S at Chester.

Positioned in second passing the judge first time, the well-backed 5-6 favourite came under increased pressure from halfway and stayed on in resolute fashion once gaining an edge into the straight to hold the late rattle of Mujtaba (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a neck, providing Ryan Moore with a record eighth renewal of the extended 10-furlong contest.

“He was a good 2-year-old who won a Listed race, a Group 3 and a Group 2, but he wasn't around for most of last year,” commented Moore. “It wasn't very pretty, but he's a real galloper and he probably hasn't been round a tight track like this before. He's only really been to the Curragh, Leopardstown and Ascot and he was just a bit unsure what to do with himself. Today's race was well up to standard and the track didn't suit him, but he has a great attitude, to be fair to him, and plenty of ability. It was a very good performance.”

Point Lonsdale, who also ran second in the G1 Vincent O'Brien National S. as a juvenile, is the ninth of 11 reported foals and one of five winners produced by the stakes-winning GIII Appalachian S. runner-up and G3 Princess Margaret S. third Sweepstake (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}), herself a half-sister to the stakes-placed Dustymour (Ire) (Azamour {Ire}) and to the dam of the stakes-winning Conformist (Hit It A Bomb). The March-foaled bay is a full-brother to G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud hero Broome (Ire) and to the hitherto unraced 2-year-old colt Diego Velazquez (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Silvestre de Sousa Banned For 10 Months By HKJC Over Betting Charge, Will Appeal

Decorated jockey Silvestre de Sousa has been suspended for 10 months by the Hong Kong Jockey Club after pleading guilty to a betting charge. 

The three-time champion jockey in Britain, who relocated to Hong Kong last year in search of better opportunities, pleaded guilty to the charge along with Vagner Borges, another Brazilian rider based in Hong Kong.

Borges was banned for 12 months by HKJC stewards. Both riders were found in breach of rule 59 (3), which says that “no jockey shall bet, or facilitate the making of a bet, or have any interest in a bet, on any race or any contingency relating to a race meeting”.

De Sousa, 42, achieved big-race successes in Britain aboard Farhh, Winter Power, Arabian Queen and more. 

According to a media release from the HKJC, he is reported to have “facilitated” Borges's bet on his mount, Young Brilliant, in a 1m1f handicap at Happy Valley on April 26.

The statement added that “there was no evidence before the stewards that Borges and De Sousa had ridden their horses in the respective race with any intention other than to obtain the best possible placing for their mounts”.

However, the stewards also underlined “it is fundamental to the integrity of racing that jockeys are not permitted to bet or to have an interest in a bet”.

Later in the day on Friday, De Sousa's solicitor, Harry Steward Moore, confirmed the rider would appeal, and said, “I'm instructed that he will be appealing it.”

Charles Byrnes Fined 6k Under Non-Triers’ Rule At Gowran Park

Trainer Charles Byrnes was hit with a massive €6,000 fine under the non-triers' rule following the running of Ellaat (GB) (Heeraat {Ire}) in a low-grade handicap on the Flat at Gowran Park on Wednesday evening.

He was found to have breached the Rule 212A (i) by the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) stewards who also slapped his jockey Gearoid Brouder with a 21-day suspension. Ellaat was also banned from running for 90 days.

It is not the first time the multiple Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer has felt the wrath of Irish racing's regulators in recent times. Back in January 2021, Byrnes had his licence suspended for six months after Viking Hoard was found to have tested positive for a sedative after a race at Tramore in which he was laid to lose for a substantial sum of money.

Ellaat, who races in the colours of Byrnes's son Cathal, flashed home to finish an eye-catching fourth under restrained riding (video). Brouder stated that his instructions for the race were to get his mount to relax, as the horse had made a noise previously, and do his best from there.

During the race, Ellaat was reported to have made a noise, hung right in the home straight and took some time to pull up after the finishing line.

The stewards at Gowran Park noted that Ellaat was observed by an IHRB Veterinary Officer and found to be coughing after the race but was otherwise normal and “not inconvenienced in any way at the time.” The betting patterns of the race were also referred on to a senior racing official for further investigation.

Swordlestown Little Team Say Soft Ground Key To Arrest’s Derby Claims

Swordlestown Little's Mariann Klay, who along with her husband Des Leadon bred the impressive G3 Chester Vase winner and new Derby favourite Arrest (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), says that soft ground will be key to the Juddmonte colt's Epsom challenge. 

Arrest, trained by John and Thady Gosden, shot to the head of the Derby market after sluicing up in his favoured testing ground at Chester on Wednesday. 

That prompted bookmakers to propel Arrest to Derby favouritism at odds of 6-1, usurping 2,000 Guineas disappointment Auguste Rodin (Ire) (Deep Impact {Jpn}).

Klay described breeding a Derby favourite from the brilliant bargain buy Nisriyna (Ire) (Intikhab) as a dream and said the success could provide inspiration for smaller breeders in the future. 

“It's wonderful–it's what everyone dreams of and, when it comes off, it's amazing,” she said after the race on Wednesday. 

“It's special because the odds are always stacked against you and so much can go wrong. It doesn't matter how well-bred they are or what trainers they are with, things can go wrong, so when it actually does happen, it really is special.”

Klay added, “Arrest loved the soft ground so, if Epsom came up soft, that would be great. I don't think he would run on anything other than soft ground but he is a very good horse, there's no doubt about it. The lovely thing is, he is a very good horse for the future, even beyond this year. He could be an exciting older horse.”

Nisriyna was snapped up for just €2,000 by Klay and Leadon at the Goffs November Sale in 2010. It has proved to be money well spent with the mare producing six individual winners, including three black-type performers who achieved ratings of 110 or more. 

Indeed, the standard in which Arrest was held in by Juddmonte was evident at Goffs last November when the internationally acclaimed owner-breeders snapped up a Wootton Bassett (GB) foal out of the mare for €340,000. 

Going back to the beginning of the success story, Klay said, “Des and I used to ride out at John Oxx's [where Nisriyna was trained but never raced], hence I knew Nisriyna's family, which allowed us to go for her at the sales. It was just one of those lucky days that we made a lucky call. 

“It doesn't always happen but I suppose it will give hope to small breeders as we only have five mares and it shows you don't always have to spend a lot of money.”

Nisriyna is also the notable producer of Dinozzo (Ire) (Lilbourne Lad {Ire}), a winner of over €1 million in prize-money in Hong Kong, and the talented sprinter Spring Loaded (Ire) (Zebedee {GB}). 

The 16-year-old darling of Swordlestown Little is reported to have a Dark Angel (Ire) colt foal at foot and, after scanning successfully in foal to Juddmonte's Kingman (GB), Klay and Leadon have ever more reason to dream.

Klay said, “She's actually in New England Stud as we speak. She has been scanned in foal to Kingman and has a nice colt by Dark Angel at foot. Obviously I can't wait to have her home! It would just be lovely if we could have a filly out of her now.”
