Emirates Poule d’Essai des Pouliches: Where Did They Come From?

by Heather Anderson & Brian Sheerin
Yeguada Centurion's Group 1 winner Blue Rose Cen has already prepped for this race with a 1 1/2-length victory in the G3 Prix de la Grotte in April, however Lindy ran second that day and reopposes on Sunday. The Coolmore partners run Never Ending Story in this fillies' Classic, and she, too, enters off a win–the G3 1000 Guineas Trial S. at Leopardstown.

SWINGALONG (IRE), Showcasing (GB)–Pilates (Ire) (Shamardal)
Owner: Sheikh Juma Dalmook Al Maktoum
Breeder: Mountarmstrong Stud
Trainer: Karl Burke
Sales History: 120,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2 yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The fourth winner of four to run from her dam, the G2 Lowther S. heroine was just two lengths back of Remarquee (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in the G3 Dubai Duty Free S. She lucked out with stall one, and could improve given the right conditions.

FANCY ME (IRE), Pivotal (GB)–Besotted (Ire) (Dutch Art {GB})
Owner: Cotton House Bloodstock
Breeder: C-Squared Investments
Trainer: Philippe Sogorb
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Out of a listed winner who was second in the G2 Prix de Sandringham, Fancy Me is the third  winner for her dam, herself a half-sister to 2006 Pouliches heroine Tie Black (Ire) (Machiavellian). Won the soft-ground G3 Prix des Reservoirs, but would need to find more on Sunday.

SAUTERNE (FR), Kingman (GB)–Salicorne (Aragorn {Ire})
Owner/Breeder: Jean-Pierre-Joseph Dubois
Trainer: Patrice Cottier
Sales History: €130,000 vendor buyback at Arqana August
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Sauterne is part of a quintet of scorers for Salicorne, herself a half-sister to the champion Stacelita (Fr) (Monsun {Ger}), who has thrown a pair of Japanese Classic-winning fillies. In with a chance if she can continue to build on her listed win in April.

LINDY (FR), Le Havre (Ire)–Llanita (GB) (Rock Of Gibraltar {Ire})
Owner: Ecurie Waldeck, Meridian International SARL Et Al.
Breeder: Ecurie La Vallee Martigny Earl
Trainer: Christophe Ferland
Sales History: €90,000 Arqana August yearling
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The most talented of three black-type horses from the multiple stakes-placed Llanita on paper, Lindy has been dominant in the French provinces. She was second to likely favourite Blue Rose Cen (Ire) (Churchill {Ire}) in the G3 Prix de la Grotte last month, but the waters are deeper here.

QUICKSTEP (FR), Wootton Bassett (GB)–Dance Toupie (Fr) (Dansili {GB})
Owner: Godolphin SNC
Breeder: Mathieu Daguzan-Garros
Trainer: Andre Fabre
Sales History: €120,000 Arqana December foal; 350,000gns Tattersalls October Book 2
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Dance Toupie has foaled a brace of group/graded-placed horses. Quickstep's granddam, Toupie (GB) (Intikhab) was second in the 2005 edition of this race. A winner over course and distance in soft going recently, this filly has yet to earn black type.

SHOWAY (FR), (Galiway (GB)–Show Gorb (Spa) (Caradak {Ire})
Owner: Gousserie Racing
Breeder: Guy Pariente Holding
Trainer: Patrice Cottier
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Fifth foal out of the Group 3-placed Show Gorb. One of the most experienced runners in the field with 11 starts under her belt already, including a narrow victory in the G3 Prix Imprudence at odds of 42-1 last time.

NEVER ENDING STORY (IRE), Dubawi (Ire)–Athena (Ire) (Camelot {GB})
Owner: Mrs John Magnier/Michael Tabor/Derrick Smith/Westerberg
Breeder: Coolmore
Trainer: Aidan O'Brien
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: First foal out of the classy Athena, winner of the GI Belmont Oaks, and half-sister to multiple highly-rated performers including Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}), and Wading (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}). She is also a daughter of Cherry Hinton (GB) (Green Desert), who is out of the legendary Urban Sea (Miswaki). Looked good in winning her Guineas trial at Leopardstown, the form of which has been boosted with the runner-up Matilda Picotte (Ire) (Sioux Nation) placing in the 1000 Guineas.

RITOURNELLE (FR), Camelot (GB)–Robanne (GB) (Paco Boy {Ire})
Owner: Jean-Claude Seroul, Haras D'Etreham & Riviera Equine Sarl
Breeder: Haras D'Etreham & Riviera Equine Sarl
Trainer: Jerome Reynier
Sales History: A €260,000 Arqana August Sale grad
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: The first winner out of Robanne, who won a maiden and was listed-placed for William Knight. Behind Showay in a trial last month and has a bit to find on ratings.

KELINA (IRE), Frankel (GB)–Incahoots (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB})
'TDN Rising Star'
Owner/Breeder: Wertheimer & Frere
Trainer: Carlos Laffon-Parias
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: Half-sister to the yard's listed-placed Ansilia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) out of the listed-placed Incahoots. Beaten just a neck by Quickstep on her return. Must have strong each-way claims on that basis.

BLUE ROSE CEN (IRE), Churchill (Ire)–Queen Blossom {Ire}) (Jeremy)
Owner/Breeder: Yeguada Centurion SL
Trainer: Christopher Head
Pedigree Notes/Form Analysis: First foal out of Queen Blossom, a Group 3 winner in Ireland and America. Arguably one of the most exciting fillies in training, she won the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac last term and returned with a dominant display to win a Group 3 here last month. Sets a high standard.

Siyouni Colt Brings 1.2 Million Euros at Arqana Breeze-Up

Lot 145, a son of Siyouni (Fr) and the Lope De Vega (Ire) mare Isabel De Urbina (Ire), became the most expensive yearling of Saturday's Arqana Breeze-Up session to that point, when selling for €1.2 million to Oliver St Lawrence on behalf of Bahraini buyers. Consigned by Brendan Holland's Grove Stud, the bay colt's dam won twice at listed level, and is a full-sister to dual group winner Manuela De Vega (Ire), who was also second in the G1 Grosser Preis von Bayern. Grove Stud picked up the Merriebelle Irish Farm-bred for €200,000 at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2022.

Military Order Seals Lingfield Trials Double For Godolphin

With match fitness an advantage leading into Saturday's Listed Fitzdares Lingfield Derby Trial S., it was Godolphin nominee and G1 Betfred Derby entry Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Anna Salai, by Dubawi {Ire}) who stepped forward for a career high in the 12-furlong test.

He set the seal on a Lingfield Trials double for the Godolphin-Appleby-Buick triumvirate with a 1 1/4-length success from impressive Newmarket winner Waipiro (Ire) (Australia {GB}), with The King's Listed Newmarket S. runner-up Circle Of Fire (GB) (Almanzor {Fr}) trailing home 4 1/4 lengths adrift in third.

The even-money favourite slipped from an early third passing the judge first time to race fifth along the backstraight. Seizing an opening and quickening smartly to gain a narrow advantage rounding the home turn, he was tackled by Waipiro at the top of the straight and stayed on powerfully under a late drive to defeat that rival in ultimately snug fashion.

Prior to winning on seasonal return at Newbury last month, Military Order backed up an Oct. 1 debut fourth at HQ with a breakthrough score back there later that month in the second of two juvenile outings.

It was a first success in the contest for Charlie Appleby, who said, “I was delighted with that, he learnt plenty today and it was a great ride by William [Buick]. We were going in there today with confidence based on what he had achieved to date. It was a mile-and-a-half and he saw it out well. He has a pedigree and a profile that is coming along very nicely into, hopefully, a Derby horse. I know he has now gone joint-favourite [in betting lists for the Derby] and deservedly so. We will obviously now be keeping an eye on what happens next week in the [G2] Dante [at York], but I was very pleased with him. I'm just delighted to see Military Order confirm he is the horse we feel he hopefully is going forward.”

Buick added, “He did everything I asked him, he's come through that really well and will have learnt plenty. Today was a different test to Newbury, but when I asked him to quicken into a gap running downhill he didn't hesitate. He was totally relaxed and beautifully balanced.”

Military Order, the fifth of six live foals, is one of two scorers produced by GSW G1 Irish 1000 Guineas runner-up Anna Salai (Dubawi {Ire}), the other being G1 Derby and G1 King George hero Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Adayar ran second in the 2021 renewal of this contest on the turf. The April-foaled homebred bay is also half to an unnamed 2-year-old filly by Exceed And Excel (Aus). Anna Salai is kin to three stakes performers and to the dams of G1 Prix Lean-Luc Lagardere-winning sire National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) and stakes-winning G1 Woolavington 2000 third Dubai Gina (Aus) (Dubai Destination).

Godolphin’s Eternal Hope Subdues Lingfield Oaks Trial Rivals

Godolphin's Eternal Hope (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}–Voice Of Truth {Ire}, by Dubawi {Ire}) does not possess a ticket for next month's G1 Oaks, but qualifies to be one of the first in line for the supplementary stage after a stylish victory in Saturday's Listed Fitzdares Oaks Trial at Lingfield.

She had yet to make a start on the turf and continued that trend after the day's stakes contests were switched to the track's synthetic surface. The homebred chestnut, untested as a juvenile, followed up a Feb. 13 debut third tackling an extended nine furlongs at Wolverhampton with a Feb. 25 breakthrough over 10 furlongs at Chelmsford in her only other start.

Eternal Hope was steadied to stalk the pace in fourth through halfway in this stakes bow. Inching closer with three furlongs remaining, the 9-4 second choice made headway under pressure off the home turn to challenge passing the furlong marker and was driven out from there to subdue Ballydoyle's 6-5 favourite Be Happy (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by an ultimately comfortable 1 3/4 lengths.

It was a day of breakthroughs for Charlie Appleby, who took his first renewal of a contest won by just one subsequent Oaks winner, Anapurna (GB) (Frankel {GB}) in 2019, this century. “She had experience on the synthetics and travelled round there well,” he said. “She picked up well and saw it out well, so I was really pleased with that. What sort of strength of depth was in there, we will have to wait and see. In terms of supplementing her for an Oaks, we didn't run her in the [Listed] Pretty Polly at Newmarket because of the ground, so that would have to be something we keep an eye on. The likelihood is we will look more towards the [G2] Ribblesdale [at Royal Ascot] with her, but I'm not saying we won't supplement. We will be keeping an eye on the Oaks picture.”

Eternal Hope is the second of four foals and lone winner from two runners produced by a winning half-sister to MG1SW sire Rio De La Plata (Rahy), G1SW sire El Expresivo (Arg) (Candy Stripes) and GSP sire Epsilon (Arg) (Acceptable). She is full to a yearling filly and a half to the unraced 2-year-old filly Word's Out (Ire) (Blue Point {Ire}).
