King Gold Reigns Supreme In Deauville’s Maurice de Gheest

Nicolas Caullery trainee King Gold (Fr) (Anodin {Ire}–Miss Gandelia {Fr}, by Kingsalsa) made a breakthrough at black-type level with a first such victory in June's G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot at ParisLongchamp when last seen and made the leap forward to prevail in a thrilling renewal of Sunday's G1 Arc Prix Maurice de Gheest at Deauville. The 39-5 chance was alert from the gates before settling under cover off the pace with just one rival behind through halfway. Inching closer when nudged along passing the quarter-mile marker, he was ridden to engage British raider Spycatcher (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}) soon after passing the furlong pole and kept on strongly under a late drive to deny that rival by a short-head after a pulsating nip-and-tuck tussle. The Hollie Doyle-ridden Saint Lawrence (Ire) (Al Kazeem {GB}) closed fast and late to finish a neck adrift in third.

“What a day and what a race,” beamed trainer Nicolas Caullery after collecting a first prize at the highest level. “I have so many people to thank, especially owners and breeders Raymonde and Christian Wingtans. It has been so much work for them, for so many years, to finally win a Group 1 race with a horse they bred. They are my friends and they have always supported me. I must also thank my wife Marine, my son Charles and others who are not us with us anymore. And, of course, King Gold who made all this possible. He has always showed great potential since he was a 2-year-old, but he has had his share of problems. We had to go slowly with him as he wasn't really that precocious and needed time to mature. He ran this winter in Dubai, where he was twice unlucky, but that set him up perfectly for the European season and he has been almost perfect since. He has always been a warrior and he had to be one today. This is history now and the present is the moment to savour. All being well, he will return over his favorite course and distance [seven furlongs at ParisLongchamp] in the [G1] Prix de la Foret.”

 

Winning rider Stephane Pasquier added, “The whole Nicolas Caullery team deserves a huge pat on the back for the work they have done to make the horse what he is today. There's a lot of emotion involved. I had a perfect race, and the horse showed his fighting qualities to the bitter end. He gave of himself particularly generously and was incredible today.”

Reflecting on the effort of the runner-up, Highclere's Harry Herbert commented, “Spycatcher put in a great performance. We almost retired him last year, but our vet treated him and he was able to resume his racing career. All credit to trainer Karl Burke and his team for getting him back to this level. Winning a Group 3, and coming so close to winning a Group 1, couldn't have been envisaged a year ago. We'll certainly consider running him in the [G1] Sprint Cup at Haydock.”

King Gold, who becomes the first Group 1 winner for his sire, is the second foal produced by the unraced Miss Gandelia (Fr) (Kingsalsa), who is a full-sister to MGSP G2 Prix Robert Papin runner-up Queensalsa (Fr). Miss Gandelia is also a half-sister to Listed Prix des Jouvenceaux et des Jouvencelles victrix and G3 Prix du Calvados third Queen America (Fr) (American Post {GB}). Queensalsa, in turn, is the dam of Listed Prix Isonomy victrix Whip And Win (Fr) (Whipper), herself the dam of Listed Prix de Saint-Cyr victrix and GIII Kentucky Downs Ladies Turf S. third Pas De Soucis (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). King Gold's third dam Nadelia (Fr) (Nadjar {Fr}), who hails from the family of MG1SW sires Sulamani (Ire) (Hernando {Fr}) and Dream Well (Fr) (Sadler's Wells), is kin to the Listed Derby de l'Ouest third King's Winner (Fr) (Legend Of France). Miss Gandelia has the unraced 2-year-old filly Nadelia (Fr) (Spanish Moon) to come.

Diana Glory For Sea The Moon’s Muskoka

Sunday's G1 165th Henkel-Preis der Diana (German Oaks) at Dusseldorf went the way of Stall Golden Goal's G3 Hamburg Stuten-Meile scorer Muskoka (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}–Morning Mist {Ger}, by Peintre Celebre) as she mastered Kassada (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) in the 11-furlong Classic staged in heavy rain. Stepping up in trip having won at a mile, the Henk Grewe trainee was reserved early in mid division by Lukas Delozier with stamina unproven. Reeling in Kassada in the last 100 metres, the 5-1 shot asserted to score by a neck from that long-time leader, with the French raider Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) completing a fabulous trifecta for the Lanwades Stud-based sire and finishing 2 1/4 lengths away in third.

Sea The Moon becomes the first sire since Monsun (Ger) to sire the winner of both G1 Deutsches Derby and G1 Preis der Diana in the same season. Germany's lynchpin did so with Shirocco (Ger) and Amarette (Ger) in 2004. Fellow Henk Grewe trainee Fantastic Moon (Ger) initiated the double with a runaway triumph at Hamburg last month. Sea The Moon is also the first sire to notch a Preis der Diana trifecta since the Gestut Graditz-based Ard Patrick (Ire) (St. Florian {GB}) did so in 1910. Ard Patrick's feat was accomplished by Letizia (Ger), Lockung (Ger) and Regina Castra (Ger).

 

“She's an unbelievably good filly with an incredible heart and fights her way past every horse in front of her,” Grewe told GaloppOnline. “She is very uncomplicated, she's easy to handle and has a huge heart. There are plenty of options open to her and the owners already have goals in mind. There's a nice race for her on Arc weekend and the Breeders' Cup is also under consideration.”

Clement Lecoeuvre, rider of third home Sea The Lady, added, “Sea The Lady ran a great race, but the distance on this [soft] surface was just a bit too far for her in the end. She still ran really well and deserved her third-place finish.”

Muskoka, who becomes the fourth Group 1 winner for her sire, is the fifth of seven live foals and one of three scorers from as many runners produced by an unraced half-sister to G1 Poule d'Essai des Poulains and G1 Prix du Jockey Club-winning sire Brametot (Ire) (Rajsaman {Fr}) and G3 Walter Nilsens Minnelop runner-up Mulan (Ger) (Marju {Ire}). She is kin to the unraced 2-year-old colt Master Of Light (Ger) (Adlerflug (Ger) and a yearling filly by Reliable Man (GB). The April-foaled chestnut's second dam Morning Light (Ger) (Law Society) is a half-sister to the aforementioned MG1SW German cornerstone Monsun (Ger) (Konigsstuhl {Ger}) and hails from a family which also features GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Aunt Pearl (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) and G1 Prix du Cadran victrix Molly Malone (Fr) (Lomitas {GB}).

Deauville: Can Art Power Prevail In The Maurice De Gheest?

Always talented but frustratingly for King Power Racing just below what is required at the top level in his native England, Art Power (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) has made successful overseas raids his main business and the travel-hungry sprinter is a notable first-timer at Deauville on Sunday for the G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest. Five trips to Ireland have resulted in a 100% win record, with The Curragh's G2 Greenlands S. and G2 Sapphire S. among this year's tally so it will be fascinating to see if his debut outing in France yields the same return.

King Power's racing manager Alastair Donald said of the Tim Easterby-trained 6-year-old, “He's got his favoured ground and he's thriving at the moment. He seems to love travelling and in French conditions we feel six and a half furlongs shouldn't be a problem–he actually ran pretty well last year over seven at York. The style of racing in France should really suit us, as he might be able to dominate and this is possibly his best chance ever to win a Group 1.”

If Art Power's love of overseas travel is confined to Ireland, there are a few among the 70% British representation that could take advantage. They include the Karl Burke-trained G3 Pavilion S. winner Cold Case (GB) (Showcasing {GB}) and G3 Prix de Ris-Orangis scorer Spycatcher (Ire) (Vadamos {Fr}). The latter was impressive in that six-furlong contest here last month and Highclere Thoroughbred Racing's managing director Harry Herbert hopes they have spotted an opportunity with this being one of the weakest renewals in years.

“It's a rather unique race obviously, in that it's run over six and a half furlongs and that would be his ideal trip,” he said. “He's been such a fun horse, he was so impressive last time and having thought he might be retired last year with a little issue he had, he now seems to be better than ever. The turnaround has been incredible for his shareholders, he's been very well trained by Karl and it's amazing to be heading over to Deauville for a group one.”

 

A Wide-Open German Oaks

Also on Sunday, Dusseldorf stage the 165th running of the G1 Henkel-Preis der Diana with no obvious standout among the 14 protagonists. As ever, the draw will play a part with only two winners having come from double-figure stalls in the last 10 renewals. Gestut Rottgen's impressive G3 Hoppegarten Diana Trial winner Kassada (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) who was subsequently second in the G3 Hamburger Stutenpreis at Hamburg last month is drawn against the fence, while Stall Golden Goal's G3 Hamburg Stuten-Meile scorer Muskoka (Ger) (Sea The Moon {Ger}) is in four as she steps up markedly in trip. Gestut Ebbesloh's G1 Deutsches Derby third Weracruz (Ger) (Cracksman {GB}) has the major disadvantage of being in stall 13, while the French raider, the G3 Prix Vanteaux runner-up Sea The Lady (Fr) (Sea The Moon {Ger}), is in 11. Sunday's other key contest is the G3 Prix Daphnis back at Deauville, where Juddmonte's unbeaten Andre Fabre-trained colt Colombier (GB) (Kingman {GB}) reappears after a break having beaten his re-opposing subsequent Listed Prix de Saint-Patrick-winning stablemate Mr Moliere (GB) (Kingman {GB}) in a ParisLongchamp conditions event in May.

Royal Scotsman To The Sidelines Until 2024 With Bone Bruising

The Classic-placed Royal Scotsman (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who bears the colours of Mrs. Fitri Hay, will not race again this season due to bone bruising, co-trainer Paul Cole revealed on Saturday. However, the G2 Richmond S. winner will return next year.

“He's suffered from bone bruising, which is quite rare but not a long-term issue,” said Paul Cole, who trains with his son Oliver. “Sadly he won't run again this season.

“My intention is to win as many Group 1s over a mile as I can with him next year.”

Second in the G1 Dewhurst S. and third in the G1 2000 Guineas at Newmarket both times to Chaldean (GB) (Frankel {GB}), the bay has been unplaced in two additional starts this term. In both cases, the colt was beaten by star 3-year-old Paddington (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}), in the G1 Irish 2000 Guineas and the G1 St James's Palace S. in May and June.
