Horseracing Bettors Forum Meets With Minister On Gambling Act Review

Horseracing Bettors Forum (HBF) Chair Sean Trivass led a delegation from the HBF and met with Stuart Andrew MP, the minister with responsibility for the Gambling Act Review, on Wednesday.

Discussions included topics such as account closures and restrictions, the protection of funds, and terms and conditions, but focused primarily on affordability checks and their potential consequences for bettors and the horse racing industry in the UK. The HBF urged the minister to ensure affordability checks had no negative consequences on an individual's crediworthiness. Andrews was receptive to the suggestion that ordinary gamblers, who gain enjoyment from what is a hobby for them, should be included in future industry consumer groups, such as through the HBF itself.

Sean Trivass said, “We felt it was a positive meeting, with the minister seeming receptive to many of the points we made, not least about affordability checks, which are already taking place with undesirable consequences.

“HBF is very aware of the need to act to protect the small minority of punters who suffer harm through their betting, and is supportive of initiatives to improve their situation but this must not come at a significant cost to the many who enjoy a bet responsibly and for whom tackling the puzzle of horseracing is a hobby and a passion.

“We look forward to discussing matters further with the minister, and to continuing to put forward the views and concerns of the British horseracing betting public to him and others.”

New Record Top Price Set For No Risk At All Gelding At Goffs UK Yorton Sale

The fifth edition of the Goffs UK Yorton Sale featured a new record top price, with 2-year-old Brisky Dancer (Fr) selling to Ian Ferguson and Dai Walters for £165,000 on Thursday. The sale celebrated it's first Grade 1 alumi this year with Inthepocket (GB) (Blue Bresil {Fr}), who scored at Aintree's Grand National Festival.

Consigned as lot 5, the gelded son of No Risk At All (Fr) is a half-brother to Grade 3 winners Al Dancer (Fr) (Al Namix {Fr}) and Tzar's Dancer (Fr) (Tzar Rodney {Fr}). The previous record price was also set by a No Risk At All 2-year-old at £105,000, also purchased by Walters, in the sale's inaugural edition five years ago.

No Risk At All also sired the second highest price on the day, a 2-year-old filly (lot 18), who is a half-sister to listed winner Night Endeavour (Fr) (Shalaa {Ire}), with the pair being out of the listed winner Night Serenade (Ire) (Golan {Ire}).

A total of 36 horses sold, the same number as last year, for a clearance rate of 80% and a gross of £1,136,000. The average dropped a tick to £31,556, and the median decreased 7% to £28,000.

Yorton owner David Futter said, “This year marks the fifth year of this sale and it's great to see so many returning clients, along with a number of new faces. We take great pleasure in hosting this sale and we can't do it without the support of those who have attended and taken part in the auction–so to them we say a sincere thank you. We would also like to thank the Goffs team who have partnered with us since the launch of this sale in 2019.”

Goffs UK Managing Director Tim Kent added, “We are delighted to break another record here at Yorton Farm and we are very proud to partner with David Futter and his team for this wonderfully unique event, where there were some lovely horses on offer today. We look forward to seeing them appear on the racecourse or in the sales ring for new connections and we hope to see another Grade 1 winner from this sale in the coming season.”

Derby-Winning Rider Edward Hide Dies At 86

Edward Hide, who won the Derby aboard Morston (Fr) (Ragusa {GB}) for Arthur Budgett in 1973, has passed away at the age of 86.

Trainer Mick Easterby paid tribute to the three-time champion apprentice who was a regular rider for the stable and said, “It is with great sadness today that I heard of the passing of my great buddy Eddie Hide.

“Eddie Hide was quite simply one of the best Flat jockeys I have seen. In my career I have been fortunate to put up two of the finest jockeys. Sadly, 2023 has seen the passing of both Eddie and my former stable jockey Terry Lucas.

“In the 1970s I'd put Eddie up whenever I had a runner in any of the big races and he never let me down once. Eddie had it all. He was an intelligent man and he knew the formbook inside out.

“You could get rich quite quickly backing Eddie on my horses, because he only rode them when he knew they were going to win. I owe a great deal to Eddie Hide. He rode the biggest winners of my career and he helped put the stable on the map in the 1970s.”

Hide, who won the G1 1000 Guineas for Easterby on Mrs McArdy (GB) (Tribal Chief {GB}) in 1977, also was the regular rider of 1976 top sprinter Lochnager (GB) (Dumbarnie {GB}). The jockey also was awarded the 'Cock of the North' title 16 times.
