Derby Winner Adayar Joins Hukum At Darley Japan Next Year

Godolphin's G1 Derby winner Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}–Anna Salai, by Dubawi {Ire}) will join Hukum (Ire) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) at Darley Japan for stallion duty in 2024, Darley announced on Thursday. Fees for the G1 King George-winning duo will be revealed later.

The first horse to win the Derby and the King George in the same year since his paternal grandsire Galileo (Ire), Adayar was retired in July.

The bay broke his maiden by nine lengths at Nottingham at second asking at two for Charlie Appleby, and was group-placed prior to winning the 2021 Derby at Epsom before adding the King George in his next start. In two starts at four, he was second in the G1 Champion S., and resumed this term with a victory in the G3 Gordon Richards S. in May. After a third-placed run in the G1 Prince Of Wales's S. at Royal Ascot, he concluded his career with a second in the G2 Princess Of Wales's S. at Newbury in July. Overall, he earned $2,553,575 and boasts a record of 13-5-4-1.

A full-brother to the stakes winner Military Order (Ire) (Frankel {GB}), Adayar is out of G3 Prix de la Grotte winner Anna Salai, who also ran second in the G1 Irish 1000 Guineas. His dam is a half-sister to stakes winners Iguazu Falls (Pivotal {GB}) and Advice (GB) (Seeking The Gold), who both placed at group level. He is also kin to G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere winner National Defense (GB) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), among others.

Hukum, a full-brother to the brilliant miler Baaeed (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}) won nine stakes races for his owner/breeder Shadwell, including the 2023 King George and the G1 Coronation Cup at Epsom. His female family features Shadwell blue hen Height Of Fashion (Fr) (Bustino {GB}).

Irish Classic Winner Westover To Yushun Stallion Station In Japan

Multiple Group 1 winner and Classic winner Westover (GB) (Frankel {GB}–Mirabilis, by Lear Fan) has been sold and will stand at Yushun Stallion Station in Japan next year, his owner/breeder Juddmonte announced on Thursday. The Irish Derby hero will be syndicated and a fee will be announced later.

Trained by Ralph Beckett, Westover won on debut at Sandown in August of 2021 and was listed-placed later that year. At three, he won the G3 Bet365 Classic Trial and was a good third in the G1 Derby prior to running off with the Irish Derby by seven lengths. Kept in training at four, he was second to the current Longines World's Best Racehorse Equinox (Jpn) (Kitasan Black {Jpn}) in the G1 Dubai Sheema Classic this March and ran second in the G1 Coronation Cup in June. Back in the winner's circle in the G1 Grand Prix de Saint Cloud in July, he would finish his career with a narrow second in the G1 King George VI And Queen Elizabeth S. and fill the same position in the G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. An injury sustained in the latter race resulted in his retirement in October. His record stands at 13-4-6-1 and $4,064,813 in earnings.

“Given his tremendously consistent race record, along with his beautiful conformation and pedigree, he is sure to make a successful contribution to the Japanese breeding industry,” Juddmonte said in a statement.

A full-brother to G3 Darley Club S. winner Monarchs Glen (GB) (Frankel {GB}), Westover is out of GIII Churchill Distaff Turf Mile S. heroine Mirabilis, who also won at stakes level in France, was second in the G3 Prix Miesque and G3 Prix du Pin and took third in the G1 Prix de la Foret. Second dam Media Nox (GB) (Lycius) claimed a pair of grade/group stakes in California and France, and then threw dual Group 1 winner Nebraska Tornado to the cover of Storm Cat.

Inns Of Court Filly Shines At Goffs Autumn

An Inns Of Court (Ire) half-sister to Group 3 winner Caught U Looking (Ire) (Harzand {Ire}) topped the first session of the Goffs Autumn Yearling Sale on Wednesday.

Part of The Castlebridge Consignment, the bay (lot 385) is out of Wild Mix (GB) (Mastercraftsman {Ire}) and sold to Johnny Murtagh and Linehan Bloodstock for €50,000. Since the catalogue was published, Caught U Looking won the G3 Park S. Under the second dam are group winners Double Or Bubble (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}) and Mix And Mingle (Ire) (Exceed And Excel {Aus}).

Lot 447, a colt by Sottsass (Fr) offered by Treadstone Bloodstock, brought €37,000 from Hana Polednikova to take second place on the leaderboard. He is a half-brother to the GIII Sweet Life S. third Nimbostratus (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}).

After the conclusion of the first day's trade, 173 horses sold of 246 offered (70%) for a gross of €1,367,600. Both the average and the median dropped by 16% and 17%, respectively. The average was €7,906 and the median was €5,000.

The sale continues on Thursday and begins at 10 a.m.

Big Up for Big Evs

ARCADIA, USA — Tom Marquand arrived at Santa Anita on Wednesday morning in the company of his wife Hollie Doyle, and while she has been ruled out of riding Bradsell (GB) (Tasleet {GB}) in the GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint through a suspension incurred at home, Marquand is relishing his participation aboard Big Evs (Ire).

The GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint favourite has shot straight to the top of the class among an exciting batch of first-crop runners for the top sprinter Blue Point (Ire). The son appeared to be made very much in his father's mould as he sped along the turf under Marquand as the sun was coming up, and the jockey was ebullient in his praise of the youngster on his return to the quarantine barn.

Marquand said, “It's my first time here and I've just been trying to take it all in. It's one of the most picturesque tracks in the world. I've always loved Goodwood, but this is a bit different. It's great to be here, especially with a horse like him. He looks in great shape and feels in great shape. He'll have to be fast but he is fast.”

Big Evs is also the first Breeders' Cup starter for his trainer Michael Appleby, who has prepared the colt beautifully for his debut season, in which he broke his maiden when winning the Listed Windsor Castle S. at Royal Ascot after finishing runner-up on debut at Redcar at the end of May. From Ascot he landed the G3 Molecomb S. at Glorious Goodwood before one disappointing run when down the field against his elders in the G1 Nunthorpe S. However, he bounced back three weeks later to post a decisive victory in the G2 Flying Childers S.

Appleby is set to appear at Santa Anita on Thursday morning, and Marquand's post-breeze report will surely have been music to his ears while he was en route to America.

The jockey added, “You almost want to try to pick a hole in a horse when you ride them, but to be honest you can't really. He looks to have taken the travel well and he's taken it all in his stride. He has a good draw and he'll have to be very good to win, but he is very good. That's the reality.

“Obviously we've a couple of days to go but he's absolutely where you'd want him to be.”
