Coolmore and Westerberg’s FRILL (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is a half-sister to G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest-winning sire Garswood (GB) (Dutch Art {GB}) and one of three representing Aidan O’Brien in this debut. The 900,000gns Tattersalls October Book 1 yearling encounters 15, including twice-raced stablemate Madonna (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is a full-sister to G1 Moyglare Stud S. winner Maybe (Ire), herself the dam of MG1SW sire Saxon Warrior (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}); and Joseph O’Brien trainee Absolutely (Ire) (Uncle Mo), who is a Coolmore homebred daughter of G1 Irish Oaks heroine Bracelet (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}).

One of three contenders for Ballydoyle, Susan Magnier’s LORD OF THE MANOR (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) is a hitherto unraced full-brother to ill-fated MG1SP G1 Epsom Derby runner-up Cliffs of Moher (Ire). His one dozen opponents include stablemate and fellow newcomer Interpretation (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is out of a half-sister to G1 Dubai Sheema Classic victress Dolniya (Fr) (Azamour {Ire}).

6.15 Dundalk, Mdn, €14,000, 2yo, f, 7f (AWT)
Coolmore’s hitherto unraced JOAN OF ARC (IRE) (Galileo {Ire}) sidestepped a heavy-ground engagement for Aidan O’Brien at The Curragh earlier in the week and encounters 13 rivals in this rescheduled debut. The homebred bay, out of G2 Cherry Hinton S. victress You’resothrilling (Storm Cat), is a full-sister to six stakes performers headed by MG1SW sire Gleneagles (Ire) and MG1SW G1 1000 Guineas and G1 Irish 1000 Guineas third Happily (Ire). Opposition features Donnacha O’Brien trainee On Tiptoes (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who is out of G1 Coolmore Stud S. victress Nechita (Aus) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}); and Trevor Stewart’s Holly Golightly (Ire) (Gleneagles {Ire}), who is a daughter of G1 July Cup runner-up Cassandra Go (Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), from the Ger Lyons stable.

Almanzor Share Tops Arqana Online Auction

Six stallion shares and breeding rights were available during the Arqana Online sale on Wednesday, and the top lot was a 1/50th share of European highweight Almanzor (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) that went for €310,000. The share, lot 6, was purchased by Elwick Stud and allows two nominations annually. The Haras d’Etreham resident, whose oldest foals are yearlings, sits second by average on the TDN European First-Crop Sires Sales Statistics page, with 14 yearlings sold for an average of $119,463.

A breeding right in leading first-season sire Mehmas (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) was knocked down to Haras du Mont-dit-Mont for €200,000. Mehmas (lot 4) is already responsible for 42 winners and four stakes-winners including G1 Middle Park S. hero Supremacy (Ire) and G2 Gimcrack S. victor Minzaal (Ire).

Stephen Hillen snapped up a 1/50th share (lot 2) in Le Havre (Ire) (Noverre) for €175,000. The sire of 40 black-type winners, the dark bay celebrated the win of Wonderful Tonight (Fr) in the G1 British Champions Fillies & Mares S. last month, one of five Group 1 winners for the 14-year-old.

Lot 5, a breeding right in Group 1 sire Showcasing (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), was sold to Broadhurst Agency for €130,000. His Mohaather (GB) saluted in the G1 Sussex S. earlier this year, giving the stallion three Group 1 winners among his 45 black-type winners.

A share in NH stallion No Risk At All (Fr) (My Risk {Fr}) (lot 3) went to Racing D for €60,000. The sixth lot was a 1/50th share in successful sire Siyouni (Fr) (Pivotal {GB}) (lot 1) which was bought back for €850,000.

TBA Announces Devonshire and Dominion Award Winners

The winners of the Devonshire and Dominion bronzes were announced by the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association on Wednesday. Prominent owner/breeder Anthony Oppenheimer was awarded the Andrew Devonshire Bronze, which is awarded for outstanding achievement and contribution to the British Thoroughbred industry. The owner of Hascombe and Valiant Stud, Oppenheimer has celebrated homebreds the likes of G1 Epsom Derby hero Golden Horn (GB) (Cape Cross {Ire}) and MG1SW Cracksman (GB) (Frankel {GB}), as well as G1 Irish Oaks heroine Star Catcher (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), just to name a few.

“It is a great honour and I am absolutely amazed,” said Oppenheimer, who is a past TBA chairman. “It was not something that ever entered my mind that I could possibly win. I was chairman of the TBA for four years, and even then it never entered my mind that when awarding it to all of these famous people, that I would actually get this honour. It is tremendously exciting.

“I never had the ambition of winning this award but now I have won it, it is just fantastic and I am really honoured by it. My father would be absolutely thrilled if he could look down, this is very much the highlight of my life.”

Ruth Quinn received the Dominion Bronze in recognition of her contribution and long-term commitment to the improvement of the Thoroughbred through her work in race programming. Through Quinn’s efforts, there is now a revitalised staying programme, more race opportunities for Flat fillies and the creation of a comprehensive jump mares’ programme.

“It’s an honour to receive the Dominion Award,” said Quinn, who is also the BHA’s Director of International Racing and Racing Development. “Horseracing is, and has been my life and the driving, ever present reason for that is the thoroughbred. Anybody who knows me well would recognise just how strongly and passionately I feel about our collective responsibilities towards the long-term health of the thoroughbred breed.”

Added TBA Chairman Julian Richmond-Watson said, “This year’s recipients are two very worthy winners of the award. The board of trustees agreed that their long-standing contribution and commitment to the improvement of the breed should be justly rewarded and recognised. The TBA is committed to the long-term future of the industry and pays tribute to Anthony and Ruth who have dedicated considerable time and effort to the British thoroughbred.”

New INS Students Announced for 2021

The students for the 2021 Irish National Stud Thoroughbred Breeding Management course have been revealed, with 24 students representing seven countries set to take part. The class begins at the County Kildare stud in January 2021. The students are as follows: Patrick Campion (USA), Shea Connolly (Ireland), Marianne Gay (France), Hortense Huet (France), Suzanne Hyland (Ireland), Sarah Kelly (Ireland), Eathan Leonard (Ireland), Conor Mahon (Ireland), Olivia Marnane (Ireland), Hannah Moriarty (USA), Alexis Navet (France), Mairead O’Riordan (Ireland), George Prince (UK), Lauren Robinson (Ireland), Mehdi Saci (France), Jake Scott Campbell (Ireland), Ben Shoare (UK), Charlie Sweeney (Ireland), Niamh Walshe (Ireland), Elinor Wolf (USA), Normarie Santiago (Puerto Rico) recipient of the Gerry Dilger Equine Scholarship, Nathan Trumper (New Zealand) recipient of the NZTBA scholarship, Lachlan Pethica (Australia) and Alyssa Pickles (Australia) recipients of the Thoroughbred Breeders Australia, Basil Nolan Jr. scholarship.

“The 24 students were selected through a rigorous and thorough application process and this year’s class comprises of a remarkable and accomplished group of individuals,” said INS Education Development Manager Anne Channon. “2021 is going to be an exciting year for the I.N.S as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the programme, our community of over 1,200 graduates spans over 30 countries an achievement that we are

all very proud of.”
