New Tattersalls Sale Attracts 197 Lots

Tattersalls has catalogued 197 lots for its inaugural March Sale, which was added to the calendar once it became apparent that the February Sale would have to be held online only.

A single session at Park Paddocks on Wednesday, March 31—two days after the easing of the British lockdown commences—is made up of 116 colts and geldings in and out of training, 640 broodmares and fillies, 12 yearlings and five 2-year-olds.

The David Loughnane-trained Dark Pine (Ire) (Dandy Man {Ire}) has won his two starts this year, his only outings since being being bought from his breeder Moyglare Stud for 27,000gns in October. The 4-year-old is catalogued as lot 120. Prior to that the Royal Studs will offer as lot 98 the once-raced Orchestral (GB), a 3-year-old son of Lope De Vega (Ire) and dual listed winner Set To Music (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}), who was previously in training with Roger Charlton.

Also catalogued is the progressive-looking Glentaneous (Ire), a 3-year-old son of Gleneagles (Ire) out of a winning full-sister to the high-class Youmzain (Ire) (Sinndar {Ire}). He will be offered as lot 129 by his trainer Brian Meehan, for whom he won a Lingfield novice race on his second start on Feb. 27.

“The addition of the Tattersalls March Sale to our 2021 sales calendar came in response to the COVID-related disruption to the February Sale and we have a catalogue which has all the ingredients to appeal to the customary mix of domestic and international buyers,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony.

“Strict COVID protocols will continue to be in place, but we are looking forward to welcoming registered participants to Park Paddocks for the March Sale, and those unable to attend in person will as ever be able to use our Live Internet and Telephone Bidding platforms.”

Frankel’s Dam Kind Dies From Foaling Complications

Kind (Ire) (Danehill-Rainbow Lake {GB}, by Rainbow Quest), the dam of the undefeated champion Frankel (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), passed away from foaling complications on Monday, Juddmonte announced. Also the dam of fellow Group 1 winner Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), the second generation Juddmonte homebred and listed winner was 20. Her final foal, a colt by Kingman (GB), was foaled on Mar. 2.

Stud Director UK Simon Mockridge commented, “I cannot thank the Rossdales and Juddmonte team enough for the tireless care they have given Kind. To many she will rightfully always be best remembered as the dam of Frankel and Noble Mission, to us at Juddmonte she will always be Kind by name and Kind by nature.”

Foaled Apr. 21, 2001, Kind was sent to the yard of Roger Charlton and won a brace of listed races during three seasons on the racecourse. Her best showing was a third in the G3 Ballyogan S. in 2005 and she was retired with a mark of 13-6-0-4 and $132,320 in earnings. However, it was as a broodmare that she truly flourished.

Overall, she produced eight foals, six runners and five winners. Bullet Train (GB) (Sadler's Wells), a winner of the G3 Derby Trial, was Kind's first foal. She visited the court of Galileo (Ire) in 2007 and her best performer, the outstanding European Horse of the Year Frankel was the result. Besides that G1 2000 Guineas hero, Kind also produced three-time Group 1 winner Noble Mission (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) and the multiple stakes winner and dual group-placed Joyeuse (GB). The latter is already the dam of the G1 Coronation S. third Jubiloso (GB) (Shamardal) and the MSP Jovial (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}). Her 3-year-old Galileo filly is named Chiasma (Ire) and is in training with John Gosden. Kind's name is also on the IFHA's International List of Protected Names.

Barring her latest foal, the other five colts out of Kind have all found their way to stallion barns, with Frankel showing the way at Banstead Manor Stud for Juddmonte with great success. Bullet Train stands at Woodfield Farm Stud and Proconsul (GB) (Galileo {Ire}) is at Annshoon Stud, both in Ireland. Noble Mission, after spending several season at Lane's End Farm in Kentucky, is standing his first season in Japan, while the winning Morpheus (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}) is at Haras de Toury in France.

Kind's second dam, the group-placed Rockfest (Stage Door Johnny), joined the Juddmonte broodmare band as a private purchase out of the John 'Jock' Hay Whitney dispersal and subsequently threw the G3 Lancashire Oaks heroine Rainbow Lake (GB) to the cover of Rainbow Quest. In addition to Kind, Rainbow Lake foaled Irish champion and GI Arlington Million scorer Powerscourt (GB) (Sadler's Wells), three-time Group 2 winner Riposte (GB) (Dansili {GB}) and Group 3 winner Last Train (GB) (Rail Link {GB}), second in the G1 Grand Prix de Paris.

Duramente Colt Upsets Japanese Guineas Prep

Hiroshi Yamada's Titleholder (Jpn) (Duramente {Jpn}) scored an upset at 16-1 in the G2 Hochi Hai Yayoi Sho Deep Impact Kinen at Nakayama on Sunday. The 2000-metre race is a pointer for the G1 Japanese 2000 Guineas in mid-April.

Away to an alert beginning, the dark bay strolled to the lead and kept a measured gallop throughout while under minimal pressure from his rivals. He slowed the pace after the first few furlongs and the first half of the race went in 1:02.6. Held together expertly at the fence by pilot Hiroshi Yokoyama turning into the stretch, the duo braced for the challenges that were sure to come.

However, second choice Schnell Meister (Ger) (Kingman (GB)}), who had dogged the pacesetter in second the whole way around, was not quite up to the task as the winner had too much gas left in the tank and finished  1 1/4 lengths back in second. He is the second progeny of Juddmonte's high-class miler and young sire to feature in the top two in a major Japanese Guineas prep, as the filly Elizabeth Tower (GB) (Kingman {GB}) had deadheated for the win in the G2 Tulip Sho on Saturday.

Rounding out the trifecta was heavy chalk Danon the Kid (Jpn) (Just A Way {Jpn}), who had stalked from fifth for much of the Nakayama contest and closed to be a neck back of Schnell Meister.

Off the mark locally over 1800 metres in October, the Okada Stud-bred was second in the G3 Tokyo Sports Hai Nisai S. in November and fourth in the Dec. 26 G1 Hopeful S. In the latter two races, he finished behind Sunday's heavy favourite Danon the Kid.

Pedigree Notes

Titleholder is the second black-type winner and first group winner for young sire Duramente, who has his first 3-year-olds this year.

A five-time winner at 1200m, 1800m (twice), 2000m and 2600m, Mowen's best finish in stakes company was a fourth in the Listed Shion S. as a sophomore. Her first foal, the winning Melody Lane (Jpn) (Orfevre {Jpn}) was followed by a dead foal and Titleholder is her third offspring. She has no further produce, but was bred to Gold Ship for 2019, Victoire Pisa (Jpn) for last year and she was covered by Duramente last spring. Under the fourth dam is G1 1000 Guineas heroine On The House (Fr) (Be My Guest).

Yulong Looking For Luck In The Guineas

Yuesheng Zhang has built up an Irish stable with enviable horsepower while shopping with a relatively modest budget over the last few years. His stable star is undoubtedly last year's G1 Keeneland Phoenix S. winner Lucky Vega (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}), who looks to someday have a future at stud both in Europe and at Zhang's Yulong property in Victoria, Australia.

For now, though, connections have set their sights on the May 1 G1 2000 Guineas in Newmarket, with the colt preparing at Jessica Harrington's yard in good nick.

“I saw Lucky Vega last week and he is in great form,” confirmed Yulong's European Racing and Bloodstock Manager Michael Donohoe. “He's turned into a beautiful physical; he's after growing, getting strong and putting on nearly 40 kilos from his last race last year. Physically he's after developing a huge amount, which you like to see. We're hoping that bodes well that he will train on from two to three. Physically and in his work so far the guys are very happy with him. Shane [Foley] sat on him last week and he was very happy with him.”

“The main early season goal is going to be the Qipco 2000 Guineas in Newmarket on May 1,” Donohoe confirmed. “Rather than taking in a trial we'll probably head straight there, although that might change. No disrespect to the Irish or French Guineas–they may be an easier target–but Jessie is keen to go straight to Newmarket. Our only slight worry, and it's probably not a huge problem, is the trip. He's extremely strong and looks very much a sprinter physically, and there is plenty of speed in his pedigree. And we know Lope De Vega can get some very fast horses. He has shown a lot of speed in a couple of his races so it's just whether he gets the mile or not. We don't think he's going to stay any further than a mile with his running style.”

One of nine yearlings purchased in his crop by Donohoe for Yulong in Europe, the Kilcarn Stud-bred Lucky Vega was a €175,000 Goffs Orby yearling, having also been sold on the Co. Kildare grounds when bringing €110,000 as a foal. He broke his maiden at first asking on June 8 last year, the day Irish racing resumed after a 2 1/2-month absence in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, and though his owner was unable to travel to attend any of his races, Lucky Vega continued to go from strength to strength throughout the campaign. He was second to Law Of Indices (Ire) (Power {GB}) in the G2 Railway S. in July before turning the tables on that rival and the likes of The Lir Jet (Ire) (Prince Of Lir {Ire}) and G1 Dewhurst S. winner St Mark's Basilica (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) with a 3 1/2-length win in the Phoenix. He could finish only fifth after being repeatedly hampered in the G1 Goffs Vincent O'Brien National S., and regrouped to be a strong second in the G1 Middle Park S. behind Supremacy (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}).

“His win in the Phoenix, he was very good that day,” Donohoe recalled. “He was caught in a pocket and when he got out he showed some serious acceleration. The form of that race held up pretty well; Law Of Indices and St Mark's Basilica were behind him.

“You can draw a line through his run in the National S; he was extremely unlucky. It's just one of things, it wasn't jockey error, it's just racing. And then he ran against Supremacy [in the Middle Park] and was very good, and there were some proper horses behind them. We were very happy; we were very disappointed with the National S., and although we would have liked to have beaten Supremacy in the Middle Park, Supremacy is an extremely talented horse as well. It'll be interesting for them to match up again and we wouldn't mind taking him on again over six or seven furlongs. His run in the Middle Park reaffirmed our belief in him, that he's a very good horse.”

Donohoe noted that Zhang has moved his entire Irish stable, which numbers around 25, to Harrington, and that he has a handful of other 3-year-olds to look forward to.

“Aside from Lucky Vega there are a couple nice 3-year-olds that broke their maidens last year and look progressive,” he said. Those include Aussie Ace (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who broke his maiden at second asking at Cork before finishing down the field in the G2 Beresford S., and a “very nice” filly by Free Eagle (Ire) called Soaring Sky (Ire), who was bought for €15,000 from the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale. “She won her only start at Dundalk at the back end of last year and she looks like a progressive filly,” Donohoe said. “Mr. Zhang also has a nice 3-year-old by Footstepsinthesand (GB) called Deputy Sandy (Ire), and he looks quite progressive.”

Zhang added nine yearlings at the European sales last year, and with the addition of three homebreds has 11 juveniles to go into training with Harrington. Understandably, Zhang was keen to repeat the dose with Lucky Vega's sire.

“We were keeping a close eye on the Lope De Vegas and they were extremely hard to buy, but we have two nice Lope De Vega colts called Lucky Kuna and Lucky San Jore,” Donohoe said. “Lucky Kuna was bought in France at the Arqana [Deauville Select Yearling Sale for €150,000]. Lucky San Jore was bought from Book 2 in Newmarket [for 50,000gns] and he's very nice. He looks quite precocious even at this stage. I was talking to Shane Foley and he gave him a little half speed during the week and he thinks that he could be one for those early season races.”

Zhang isn't only concentrating on colts, however. His 2021 juvenile lineup includes a pair of well-bred Galileo fillies: a three-quarter sister to G1 Irish Derby winner Trading Leather (Ire) purchased for £185,000 at Goffs Orby last year and a half-sister to four-time Group 1 winner Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}) picked up for 305,000gns at Tattersalls.

“With Mr. Zhang's farm in Australia he's always on the lookout for some well-bred fillies and we bought two nice Galileo fillies,” Donohoe said. “So if lightning can strike twice we'll be happy.”

Zhang's Irish stable is completed by a handful of older reliable performers like Barbados (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), a 5-year-old gelding who was twice stakes-placed last year after being purchased privately from Ballydoyle; 2020 G2 Mooresbridge S. winner Leo De Fury (Ire) (Australia {GB}), who was gelded at the end of the season; and Ancient Spirit (Ger) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), a listed winner and twice group placed last year at five.
