Al Quoz Goes To America’s Extravagant Kid

Extravagant Kid (Kiss the Kid) broke his group duck and became the first American-trained winner of the $1-million G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan on Saturday.

As soon as the gates flew, the field split into two groups–one in the centre of the course and one against the far rail–as favoured Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) got squeezed out of the back of the latter bunch. Under Ryan Moore, Extravagant Kid enjoyed clear sailing and shifted back toward the centre of the course with several rivals to make it three separate clusters across the track with a half-mile remaining. True Valour (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}) showed the most early dash and cut out fractions while closest to the grandstand.

He still held a narrow advantage as the centre group merged with the grandstand brigade at the 300-metre pole, but Godolphin runners Man Of Promise (Into Mishchief) to his right flank and Royal Crusade (GB) (Shamardal) on his other side both appeared poised to rally, as did a surging Acklam Express (Ire) (Mehmas {Ire}) on the other side of the course. Extravagant Kid, meanwhile, was also coming with his run, as was another Godolphin pair in Space Blues and Final Song (Ire) (Dark Angel {Ire}) to the eventual winner's immediate left.

Seizing command with 100 metres to travel, Extravagant Kid just held off the closing Final Song by a half-length, while Acklam Express was a neck back in third, 1 1/4 lengths to the good of Equilateral (GB) (Equiano {Fr}).

“What an unbelievable race,” said his owner David A Ross. “His trainer Brendan Walsh had a good feeling about him, he came into the race well, Brendan had him prepped well. He really liked the venue here and we thought we would take advantage. As an 8-year-old, what about that?”

“No credit must go to me, I just put the saddle on,” said Brendan Walsh, who was winning his second Dubai World Cup night feature after Plus Que Parfait (Point of Entry)'s victory in the 2019 G2 UAE Derby. “My lad here looked after him and he was very pleased with him.”

“It was a very messy race,” said pilot Ryan Moore, who was winning his first G1 Al Quoz Sprint. “The speed looked like it was going to be stands' side but we had to make a decision. Space Blues and Khaadem were going, they were the best horses and gave me a bit of toe. The horse ran a super race at Keeneland [in the Breeders' Cup]. He is a very talented horse. You'll have to watch out for Brendan when he comes back here.”

In action for seven seasons and still going strong, Extravagant Kid hadn't visited the winner's circle since an allowance win at Churchill Downs in May of 2020, but in his ensuing seven starts, he'd only been off the board twice. Fifth in the GII Shakertown S. at Keeneland in July, the gelding was only a neck behind Diamond Oops (Lookin At Lucky) in the GII Twin Spires Turf Sprint S. back in Louisville on Sept. 4 and was second yet again in the GII Woodford S. warming up for a run in the Breeders' Cup. Not disgraced after a wide journey, he made up some late ground to take fourth in Glass Slippers (GB) (Dream Ahead)'s GI Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint back at Keeneland on Nov. 7.

He kicked off 2021 with a neck second in the Listed Janus S. at Gulfstream Park on New Year's Day, the same spot he'd filled in 2018 and won outright in 2019. Another second, this time in the state-bred Sunshine Sprint S. on Jan. 16 on the dirt followed, and he was five lengths in arrears in the washed out Colonel Power S. at the Fair Grounds on Feb. 13.

Pedigree Notes

Extravagant Kid is the only black-type winner, and first group and Group 1 winner from limited opportunity for his sire, who won the GIII Cliff Hanger S. and GIII Appleton S., and was third in the 2008 GI Donn H.

Despite only making three starts, Pretty Extravagant reported home a winner at two and Extravagant Kid is her first foal. Her Treasure Beach (GB) 4-year-old filly Extravagant Rosie is a winner, as is her Itsmyluckyday 3-year-old gelding Uncle Pip. Her filly of 2019, Prettykeen (Keen Ice), is unraced and her most recent produce is a weanling colt by Bernardini foaled on Mar. 2.

Although Extravagant Kid is the only stakes winner under the first four dams, his fourth dam, Pretty Fresh (Forli {Arg}), is a full-sister to 1975 GI Hollywood Derby and 1976 GI United Nations H. victor Intrepid Hero (Forli {Arg}).

Subjectivist Romps To Gold Cup Glory

Dr Jim Walker's Subjectivist (GB) (Teofilo {Ire}) threw down a notable marker for some of the top staying contests in Europe this summer when running his rivals ragged to win the G2 Dubai Gold Cup by 5 3/4 lengths  in a new track record time of 3:17.77.

Taking his first ride at Meydan, Joe Fanning had the Mark Johnston-trained 4-year-old handy throughout, positioned just off the early leader For The Top (Arg) (Equal Stripes {Arg}) in the initial stages before making his intentions clear ahead of the final bend. Easing Subjectivist to the lead, Fanning asked him to stretch clear of his rivals, laying down a challenge which none could answer as the leader quickly put plenty daylight between himself and the chasing pack around the turn. Staying on resolutely over the two miles, Subjectivist's advantage only increased down the straight as he galloped home to seal a dominant victory.

Walderbe (Ger) (Maxios {GB}), trained by Ralf Rohne in Germany, was runner-up under Mickaelle Michel, finishing a head in front of Away He Goes ((Ire) (Farhh {GB}). Godolphin's Secret Advisor (Fr) (Dubawi {Ire}) had been sent off as favourite under William Buick but could never land a blow, eventually clinching fourth from Team Valor's Spanish Mission (Noble Mission {GB}).

The youngest runner of the field, Subjectivist was making his first start since winning the G1 Prix Royal-Oak at ParisLongchamp on Oct. 25.

“He's a good horse and there was a bit of juice in that ground, which suited him,” said Joe Fanning. “He settled well and I was always going so easy before the turn in. He stays very well. I rode him out here yesterday and thought the ground was good. I think he'll go on any surface. He's a good horse and has loads of ability and I think he's a better horse this year.”

The jockey added that it was “100 per cent” worth having to spend 10 days in hotel quarantine on his return to the UK.

Mark Johnston, who made the trip to Dubai with his wife Deirdre, almost certainly feels the same after cheering home his first winner on World Cup night for more than two decades.

“The horses have all run well here but frankly we haven't been bringing the right horses, it's a simple as that,” said Britain's winning most trainer. “So the is the first time I've come here thinking surely this horse is the one they all have to beat. He was a Group 1 winner in his last outing and he didn't have to improve on that, he just had to run up to his best.”

Johnston continued, “There were big doubts about the ground because he had won on from good ground to heavy ground—his Group 1 came on heavy ground—but he hasn't run on anything  faster than that. Joe Fanning, who has not ridden here before, was fascinated by the track when he went out on it yesterday. I walked on the track and I don't think I've seen a turf track in the world in better condition than this. So I was feeling that we had all our ducks in a row—there was no reason why he shouldn't perform up to his best on this, and he has done.”

Looking ahead to a top-class staying campaign back in Europe, Johnston added, “I never belittle the success of Stradivarius (Ire). We've come second to Stradivarius so many times with Dee Ex Bee (GB) and Nayef Road (Ire)—he's become a bit of a nemesis for us. But this year, going into 2021, we have this horse and we have his three-parts brother Sir Ron Priestley (GB), so we have some great ammunition to take on Stradivarius with.”

Pedigree notes
Inbred 3×3 to Danehill, Subjectivist is a graduate of Barry and Susan Hearn's Mascalls Stud and is the third foal of the mile maiden winner and listed-placed Reckoning (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}). The 12-year-old mare is a grand-daughter of Aspirationl (Ire) (Sadler's Wells), herself a full-sister to leading National Hunt sire Sholokhov (Ire) and half-sister to the dam of another, Soldier Of Fortune (Ire).

All three of the mare's winners are trained by Johnston in Yorkshire and they have all gained black type. As mentioned above, Sir Ron Priestley (GB), by another son of Galileo (Ire), Australia (GB), is now five and was runner-up to Logician (GB) in the St Leger after winning five races at three, including the G3 March S. Their 3-year-old half-sister Alba Rose (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) is also owned by Dr Walker and was third in the G2 Rockfel S. having won a seven-furlong novice race at Thirsk last season. She holds an entry for the Irish Oaks.

Reckoning's 2-year-old filly by Ulysses (Ire) was a vendor buy-back at 140,000gns at Tattersalls last October. The mare also has a yearling colt by Roaring Lion and was covered last year by Too Darn Hot (GB).

Grand National-Bound Balko Des Flos Tops Goffs March

Grade 1 winner Balko Des Flos (Fr) (Balko {Fr}), who holds an entry for the Randox Health Grand National on April 5, topped the Goffs Online March Sale with a bid of €110,000 from Peter Molony.

Acting on behalf of racehorseclub.com, Molony indicated that the former Gigginstown House Stud campaigner, who won the G1 Ryanair Chase at the 2018 Cheltenham Festival, would remain in training with Henry de  Bromhead.

He said, “Balkos Des Flos is being aimed at the National. He has been bought for an exciting new venture about which there will be further news announced in the coming weeks.”

Molony added, “I found the Goffs Online site and timed auction format extremely user-friendly. I bid on my phone while halfway up a mountain in the middle of Land Rover Sale inspections.”

Held as a timed online auction, the session featured young jumping stock, breeding stock and horses in training, with 32 horses sold for a total of £557,600 and an average of £17,425.

At the conclusion of the day's trade, Goffs Group Chief Executive Henry Beeby said, “This was Goffs' second timed online auction, following the Doncaster January Sale which was moved online, and to see both sales topped by six figure sales— £110,000 and £300,000 respectively—is a great endorsement of the role Goffs Online now plays in our overall offering. This method is never the first choice, but time after time since the Covid 19 pandemic began a year ago, Goffs Online has proven to be an invaluable vehicle for our clients with over €8.6 million of business successfully conducted so far.”

He added, “Following the January Sale we reviewed the timed format with vendors and purchasers, and launched a number of improvements to the site prior to today's sale. Since the catalogue was released, over 4000 unique viewers visited the online catalogue, and we accepted 197 bids from buyers in Ireland, the UK and France whilst feedback from clients was overwhelmingly positive in relation to usability and the opportunity to trade that the sale provided.”

Mystic Guide Draws Six For Dubai World Cup

Godolphin's Mystic Guide (Ghostzapper), the current favourite to give Sheikh Mohammed a tenth victory in the Dubai World Cup, has drawn gate six for Saturday's $12 million contest.

His trainer Michael Stidham, who his making his Dubai debut, was clearly delighted with his 4-year-old's starting position. He said at Wednesday's draw at Meydan, “It's perfect. I couldn't be happier.”

Mystic Guide is one of three runners for the owner each trained in different countries, with the Andre Fabre trainee Magny Cours (Medaglia d'Oro) having drawn 12 and Saeed Bin Suroor's representative Gifts Of Gold (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}) widest of all in 14.

Recent GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational runner-up Jesus' Team (Tapiture) will jump from stall nine and will have Sleepy Eyes Todd (Paddy O'Prado next to him in 10.

Jose Francisco D'Angelo, trainer of 4-year-old Jesus Team, said, “When I saw post position nine I was happy because it's in the middle. He doesn't need to make an aggressive move at the beginning. I like the number nine, and I am very sure [about my horse]. It was a relief. In the Breeders' Cup Mile he had to start from gate 11. He can move fast to find a good spot.”

Great Scot (GB) (Requinto {Ire}), who took third behind Mishriff (Ire) and Charlatan in the Saudi Cup last month, has the assistance of Frankie Dettori from his inside draw in stall one, with locally-trained Hypothetical (Ire) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) drawn alongside him in two, just inside Japanese raider Chuwa Wizard (Jpn) (King Kamehameha {Jpn}).

Ryuji Okubo, trainer of the latter, was also satisfied with the outcome. He said, “It is a good draw. I didn't want a wide gate because [the start] is close to the first turn.”

The Fawzi Al Nass-trained Salute The Soldier (Ger) (Sepoy {Aus}) takes his place in the Dubai World Cup line-up on the back of consecutive victories in rounds two and three of the Al Maktoum Challenge. The 6-year-old has drawn 11, while Military Law (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), who returns at Meydan following his sixth-place Saudi Cup finish, is in five.

Completing the field are Title Ready (More Than Ready) in gate four, Ajuste Fiscal (Uru) (Ioya Bigtime) in gate 13, Thegreatcollection (Saint Anddan) in eight, and Capezzano (Bernadini) has been drawn in seven.
