First Winner For El Kabeir as Son Don Chicco Graduates in Rome

1ST-CAPANNELLE, €13,200, Mdn., 5-9, 2yo, 1200m (AWT), 1:13.50.
DON CHICCO (GB) (128, c, 2, El Kabeir-Otrooha (Ire), by Oasis Dream {GB}), a distant second locally going 1000 metres over soft ground when unveiled on May 1, was tabbed the even-money pick in this quick return. Trying the all-weather surface for the first time, the bay battled with a rival for the advantage from the bell and sat a neck second on the far turn. He re-bid for the lead in upper stretch and forged clear to win by three lengths over Il Grande Gatsby (Ire) (Churchill). The winner is the first for his Yeomanstown Stud-based first-season sire. The son of Scat Daddy scored at the graded level at both two and three, taking the 2014 GII Kentucky Jockey Club S. as a juvenile, and adding the GIII Gotham S. and GIII Jerome S. as a sophomore. He also ran third in the 2015 GI Wood Memorial S. Don Chicco's dam was unraced, but he is the second winner from three to race for her. Otrooha's latest produce is a Massaat (Ire) yearling filly. Second dam Mumayeza (GB) (Indian Ridge {Ire}) is a half-sister to G2 Hardwicke S. hero Maraahel (Ire) (Alzao). Sales history: 10,000gns RNA Wlg '19 TATNOV; £8,500 Ylg '20 GOFSEP. Galileo’s Bolshoi Ballet Devastating In The Derby Trial

What had looked a match-up between Ballydoyle's TDN Rising Star Bolshoi Ballet (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and Coolcullen's returning G1 Futurity Trophy hero Mac Swiney (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) in Sunday's G3 Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown proved anything but as the former produced a devastating performance which is up with the best of his stable's previous 13 winners. Leading the main group as Ryan Moore kept it simple, the even-money favourite who had taken the G3 Ballysax S. over this 10-furlong trip here Apr. 11 was sent past the Bolger pacemaker Wexford Soil (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}) approaching three out and stretched out impressively to record a six-length verdict over stablemate Lough Derg (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), with Fernando Vichi (Ire) (Australia {GB}) half a length back in third and a neck in front of Mac Swiney. The winner was slashed to 2-1 for the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby.

Galileo’s Joan Of Arc Too Strong In the Guineas Trial

Making all in Sunday's G3 Irish 1,000 Guineas Trial over a mile at Leopardstown, Ballydoyle's Joan of Arc (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was in the process becoming a sixth pattern-race winner from seven foals for Coolmore's remarkable You'resothrilling (Storm Cat). Last seen finishing sixth in the seven-furlong G3 Ballylinch Stud 1,000 Guineas Trial at this track Apr. 11, the full-sister to Gleneagles (Ire) set an honest tempo under Ryan Moore and stayed on strongly to deny Flirting Bridge (Ire) (Camelot {GB}) by 1 3/4 lengths on a day when racing prominently seemed to offer an advantage. The 11-4 favourite also maintains her dam's 100% record of producing group performers, with the year-older Vatican City (Ire) the only one not to score in that company although he was second in the 2020 G1 Irish 2000 Guineas.

Sea the Stars’ Third Realm Takes the Derby Trial

There were shades of High-Rise (Ire) (High Estate {Ire}) at Lingfield on Saturday as Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's silks were carried to success by Third Realm (GB) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) in the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial. Winning the second blue riband prep within the week for his owner-breeder and the Roger Varian stable, the 14-1 shot who broke his maiden over an extended 10 furlongs at Nottingham Apr. 17 was held up early by David Egan before making his move downhill to the home straight. Getting first run on the 6-5 favourite Adayar (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) there, the homebred stayed on strongly to keep him at bay and score by 1 1/4 lengths. High-Rise was the winner of this in 1998 before going on to Derby glory and Third Realm was cut to around the 16-1 mark for the June 5 Classic afterwards.

Varian, whose El Drama (Ire) (Lope de Vega {Ire}) also races in these silks and captured Thursday's Listed Dee S. at Chester, was leaning towards targeting the June 5 G1 Epsom Derby. “I've yet to speak with the owner, so we'll not set anything in stone just yet and most importantly we need to see how the horse comes out of today's race,” he commented. “He ticks a lot of the boxes in that he's won a recognised trial, it looks like he'll get the trip and he's won on good-to-firm ground at Nottingham and in pretty testing conditions today. He's a neat, well-balanced colt who ought to handle the undulations of Epsom. It's the nature of the business that you're cautiously optimistic when you're going from a maiden to a recognised trial, but it isn't a surprise–he's a colt we think a lot of. He won nicely at Nottingham. I was worried about the ground, to be honest, but I thought if he handled conditions he'd be well up to running a nice race.”

Third Realm is a half-brother to this stable's G3 Bengough S.-winning sprinter Cape Byron (GB) (Shamardal), who also won on the afternoon at Haydock. Also a half to the G2 Prix Daniel Wildenstein scorer Ostilio (GB) (New Approach {Ire}), the G1 Prix Saint Alary third Imperial Charm (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the G1 Prix Jean Romanet heroine Ajman Princess (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), his listed-placed dam is a half to the G2 Celebration Mile winner and GI Arlington Million runner-up Afsare (GB) also by Dubawi. Her 2-year-old colt Triple Time (Ire) (Frankel {GB}) has yet to race, while she also has a yearling colt by Lope de Vega (Ire).
