Sea The Stars Filly Earns Rising Star Tag at The Curragh

She may have been a shade slowly into stride for Saturday's Irish Stallions Farms EBF Maiden at The Curragh, but Moyglare Stud Farm's 2-year-old filly Eclat de Lumiere (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) was motoring at the business end of the seven-furlong contest to earn TDN Rising Star status with a degree of panache and become the 12th 'TDN Rising Star' for her sire. Overcoming a dawdling getaway and an unfavourable outside draw to track the leaders in sixth after the initial strides, the 7-2 chance made smooth headway into contention approaching the quarter-mile marker and kept on strongly once launching her challenge passing the furlong marker to deny the promising effort of Benitoite (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}) by a half length.

“She's a lovely filly and she had been working nicely, but she's still a very big immature filly so whether I run her again this year or not is debatable,” said trainer Dermot Weld. “The ground was probably a shade softer than ideal for her and Colin [Keane] just thought she has plenty of pace. If I run her once more again it will be in a stakes race and that will be it. I'll discuss it with her owner Eva Maria Haefner. There is the [G3] CL Weld Park S., but I wouldn't the ground too soft as she's a very good actioned filly. She's a lovely filly for next year. She had the race won from a fair bit out today and is a lovely filly in the making.”

Eclat de Lumiere becomes the seventh scorer produced by a winning daughter of stakes-winning G3 Prix Penelope third Bellona (Ire) (Bering {GB}), herself a half-sister to three black-type performers headed by G3 Prix de Flore-winning matriarch In Clover (GB) (Inchinor {GB}). The April-foaled homebred chestnut, the latest foal for her dam, is a full-sister to G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victrix Listen In (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and a half to G1SW Hong Kong champion Dominant (Ire) (Cacique {Ire}), G2 Lennox S.-winning sire Es Que Love (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}) and Listed Midsummer S. winner Zhui Feng (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}).

Frankel’s Rumi Gets Up In The Nonette

It was as tight as it gets at the finish of the 10-furlong G2 Prix de la Nonette at Deauville on Saturday, with Rumi (Fr) (Frankel {GB}) inching out Penja (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) as the home-trained fillies came out on top again as they had been in the Calvados earlier on the card. Coming in off a break having finished sixth in the G1 Prix Saint-Alary at ParisLongchamp May 24 and ninth in the G1 Prix de Diane at Chantilly June 20, Al Shira'aa Farms' Apr. 11 G3 Prix Vanteaux winner tracked the pace closely on the inside as Gerald Mosse saved ground throughout. Challenging between rivals inside the last 50 metres, the 35-1 outsider had her nose down on the line to deny the G3 Prix de Psyche scorer Penja as Rougir (Fr) (Territories {Ire}) joined in with a flourish down the outside to be a short neck off them in third. “She had run only once as a 2-year-old and was moderate first time out this year, but in hindsight it was a little bit too early to be bringing her back,” trainer Carlos Laffon-Parias said. “After her fight in the group 3, she was maybe not prepared for all that and lacked freshness and experience in her next races. She wasn't really disgraced in the Diane and was running on at the end, so I gave her a good break and she'd been working well and was very fresh so it was probably what she needed. We'll target the [G1 Prix de l'] Opera [at ParisLongchamp Oct. 3]–we have seven weeks, so that's plenty of time and we'll see how she goes there before the owners decide if they want to keep her in training as a 4-year-old.”

Rumi, who cost €700,000 at the 2019 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale, is out of Secrete (Fr}) (Cape Cross {Ire}) whose first foal was the G3 Prix Noailles third Normandy Eagle (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}) and whose third is the Listed Bluebell S. scorer Solage (GB) by Frankel's sire Galileo (Ire). The second dam is the Wertheimers' Featherquest (GB) (Rainbow Quest), a half-sister to Groom Dancer who was responsible for the G1 Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud heroine Plumania (GB) (Anabaa) and the G2 Prix de Royallieu winner Balladeuse (Fr) (Singspiel {Ire}). Plumania produced three black-type performers headed by the G2 Prix du Muguet winner Plumatic (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}), as well as the dam of the Listed Prix Zarkava scorer and G1 Prix Saint Alary third Solsticia (Ire) (Le Havre {Ire}), while Balladeuse is also the dam a trio of that ilk including the G1 Prix Vermeille heroine and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Left Hand (GB) also by Dubawi. Secrete, who is also linked to the G1 Poule d'Essai de Poulains-winning sire Falco (Pivotal {GB}), has a 2-year-old colt by Galileo (Ire) and a yearling colt by Roaring Lion with the latter selling to David Redvers for €100,000 at this week's Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale.

Dubawi’s Space Blues Takes The City Of York

Godolphin's Saturday at York had started in ideal fashion and got better as TDN Rising Star Space Blues (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) came back to near his peak over his favoured trip in the seven-furlong G2 Sky Bet City of York S. Last year's G1 Prix Maurice de Gheest hero had needed his European return when fourth in Goodwood's G2 Lennox S. July 27 and was kept away from the frantic speed duel up ahead anchored towards the rear by William Buick. Making smooth progress wide to take control passing the two-furlong pole, the 11-8 favourite employed his superior speed from there to score by 1 1/2 lengths from Highfield Princess (Fr) (Night of Thunder {Ire}), with another Godolphin runner in Glorious Journey (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) a neck away in third. “He settles well in his races nowadays, but the loose ground on top was a bit of an unknown–it's shifting a bit beneath the horses–and he was struggling with it early on,” Buick explained. “When he changed gear and lowered himself, he really found his stride. The Lennox didn't work out as we hoped it would and he was entitled to come on for that run. I think he is quick enough for six furlongs, but I'm not sure that he is at his best over that distance. A stiff six on good or softer ground might suit but, when you look through his form, the best of it is over six and a half and seven.”

Space Blues, whose record at this distance reads seven wins from 10 starts, had continued his winning sequence in Riyadh's 1351 Turf Sprint Feb. 20 but lost his sheen of invulnerability when only ninth in the six-furlong G1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan Mar. 27. Charlie Appleby was happy to see him back to his smooth-travelling best here and said, “We were very pleased with Space Blues, who went into the race as the one to beat and did it nicely. The aim now will be to go straight to the [Oct. 3] G1 Prix de la Foret on Arc weekend. We have tried to get him to that race for the last couple of years, but hopefully we can get a clean run with him this time.”

The dam Miss Lucifer (Fr) (Noverre) was also at her best over seven furlongs, winning the G2 Challenge S. and Listed October S. at the trip. She is also responsible for the four times group-winning Shuruq (Elusive Quality), who is in turn the dam of the GIII The Very One S. winner and the GI Belmont Oaks Invitational S. runner-up Antoinette (Hard Spun) and the GIII Jimmy Durante S. runner-up Javanica (Medaglia d'Oro). This is the family of the G1 Premio Roma heroine High Hawk (Ire), who is renowned as the dam of the triple group 1-winning Breeders' Cup Turf hero and leading sire In the Wings (GB), the G1 1000 Guineas heroine Virginia Waters (Kingmambo) and the G1 Matron S. heroine Chachamaidee (Ire) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}). Miss Lucifer has the unraced 3-year-old filly Beautiful Future (Ire) (Night of Thunder {Ire}) and a yearling filly by Dark Angel (Ire).

New Bay’s Saffron Beach Bounces Back In The Atalanta

Yet another member of the cast from the G1 Falmouth S. to uphold the high standard of form of that July 9 Newmarket feature, Saffron Beach (Ire) (New Bay {GB}) who had scoped dirty after finishing 11th there came roaring back in Saturday's G3 Betway Atalanta S. at Sandown. Tracking the leading pair under Hollie Doyle, the May 2 G1 1000 Guineas runner-up was sent to the front approaching the two-furlong marker and stayed on strongly to take the mile contest by 2 1/4 lengths from Waliyak (Fr) (Le Havre {Ire}), with Ville de Grace (GB) (Le Havre {Ire}) half a length away in third. “I was surprised she went off the price she did, as on form figures she had the best in the race if she turned up and she did,” Doyle said of the 9-2 shot. “She settled beautifully today and that ground probably slowed her down a bit and she dropped her head. I knew she would get a bit further, so I committed two down and she ran through the line. I think she would get 10 furlongs, but ridden like that I don't see why she can't stay at a stiff mile.”

Successful in the seven-furlong G3 Oh So Sharp S. on soft ground at Newmarket in October, Saffron Beach found the speedier Sacred (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}) 3/4 of a length too strong in the G3 Nell Gwyn S. over the same course and distance on her return Apr. 14 before her stellar effort in the Guineas. Eighth when failing to stay in the storm-hit G1 Epsom Oaks June 4, the chestnut had a valid excuse for her Falmouth flop but had a class edge here as long as that experience had not left a mark. “She really enjoyed coming up the hill the last two furlongs,” trainer Jane Chapple-Hyam said. “We had our hiccup in the Oaks and a hiccup in the Falmouth, where she scoped dirty afterwards, and she has come back here as the filly we know that she is. It was important today, just because we believe in the horse and I had to drop her back to a group 3 just to get the horse's confidence back as much as anything. I'd love to have a little go at the [GI] E. P. Taylor [at Woodbine Oct. 17] as I love to travel. I made my decision in the Oaks and it was wrong, so I think I have to leave it to the owners.”

Saffron Beach's dam Falling Petals (Ire) (Raven's Pass) counts among her half-siblings the G1 Middle Park S. third Huntdown (Elusive Quality) and the latter's full-sister Continua, who in turn produced the G3 World Trophy S. and G3 Molecomb S.-winning sire Cotai Glory (GB) (Exceed and Excel {Aus}). The second dam is the listed-placed Infinite Spirit (Maria's Mon), while the third dam Eternal Reve (Diesis {GB}) annexed the G3 Matron S. and was runner-up in the G1 Coronation S. and is related to the leading sire Miswaki. Falling Petals' unraced 2-year-old colt by Cotai Glory's sire was bought for 120,000gns by Shadwell at the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale Book 2 and is named Eshkaal (Ire), while she also has a yearling filly by Australia (GB) due to sell at the upcoming Book 1 Sale and a 2021 full-brother to Saffron Beach.
