Daiwa Major Colt Stays Perfect in Niigata Nisai

Successful when unveiled at Chukyo in a newcomers' heat in June, Serifos (Jpn) (Daiwa Major {Jpn}) made it two on the bounce with a first black-type and group score in the G3 Niigata Nisai S. on Sunday.

Sent off as the 7-2 third choice, the Oiwake Farm-bred took advantage of his rail draw and saved every inch of ground against the fence in midpack through the early going as Otaru Ever (Jpn) (Leontes {Jpn}) showed the way. After a half in :48.50, he was sitting sixth as that rival continued to lead.

Dashing up the rail with three furlongs remaining down the long Niigata straight, he gradually subdued Otaru Ever, and appeared to be home free. The 9-5 favourite, Arrival (Jpn) (Harbinger {GB}), made a late run, but finished 1 1/4 lengths back on the line. It was three-quarters of a length back to Otaru Ever in third.

Pedigree Notes

By one of the increasingly rare active sire sons of Sunday Silence, Serifos is the 38th black-type winner and 18th group winner for the 2004 Japanese 2000 Guineas hero Daiwa Major, who stood at Shadai Stallion Station this season for a private fee. Serifos's broodmare sire Le Havre already has a pair of black-type winners in that sphere, this season's progressive G1 Coronation Cup winner Pyledriver (GB) (Harbour Watch {Ire}) and Des Ailes (Jpn), a Japanese Group 2 victress who is by the late Deep Impact (Jpn) (Sunday Silence).

The winner is the second foal and scorer for his dam, who won the Listed Prix Maurice Zilber at four and placed in the G3 Prix Bertrand du Breuil Longines at five. Serifos is the last reported foal for Sea Front, who was purchased for €135,000 out of the Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale in 2016 and sent to Japan.

Although Sea Front is the only black-type winner for her unraced dam, Freedom Herself (Fr) (Freedom Cry {GB}), the latter's half-sister Mediation (Ire) (Caerleon) won at the listed level in Ireland and placed at the group level there and Stateside. As a broodmare, Mediation has foaled GI Pacific Classic S. hero Go Between (Point Given), stakes winner Go Around (Medaglia d'Oro), the G2 Cherry Hinton S. third Extreme Beauty (Rahy) and the winning dam of GI Chandelier S. and GI Starlet S. third K P Dreamin (Union Rags).

Siyouni’s Mise En Scene Swoops For Prestige Triumph

Qatar Racing's unbeaten 2-year-old filly Mise En Scene (GB) (Siyouni {Fr}) backed up a four-length debut score at Haydock last month with victory on black-type bow in Saturday's G3 Tote Prestige S. at Goodwood and provided trainer James Ferguson with a landmark score in the seven-furlong fillies' test. The 7-1 chance went forward from the break and claimed a prominent slot along the rail behind the leading duo after the initial exchanges. Angled outside for a clear passage passing the quarter-mile marker, she was shaken up approaching the final furlong and produced a strong late burst to deny 7-2 favourite Daneh (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) by a neck in the dying strides.

“We've always really liked her at home and to get her from Sheikh Fahad, given her pedigree, was a real honour,” said Ferguson after securing the first pattern-race winner of his fledgling career. “She looks like she'll make a really nice 3-year-old to 4-year-old, but just came to hand ready for Haydock and she was impressive [on debut] there. That kept the dream alive for everyone at home and black-type was then the route. I knew she'd taken a step forward for her first run and it was great to see her finish out like that. I'll have to talk to Sheikh Fahad and the team before making a plan, but the [Oct. 8 G1] Fillies' Mile [at Newmarket] looks an option. She's obviously the best I've had and it feels brilliant.”

Mise En Scene, half-sister to a weanling filly by Zoustar (Aus), is the third of four surviving foals and lone scorer produced by an unraced half-sister to four black-type performers headed by G1 1000 Guineas heroine Speciosa (Ire) (Danehill Dancer {Ire}) and GIII Stars & Stripes Breeders' Cup Turf H. winner Major Rhythm (Rhythm). The February-foaled bay's second dam Specifically (Sky Classic), whose descendants also include G1 Irish Derby third Festive Cheer (Fr) (Montjeu {Ire}) and this term's stakes-winning G3 Prix Six Perfections runner-up (Zellie (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}), is kin to MG1SW distaffer Pride (Fr) (Peintre Celebre) and G3 Prix de Flore victrix and G1 Prix Ganay third Fate (Fr) (Teofilo {Ire}). Pride has produced two black-type performers of her own, namely G2 Grand Prix de Chantilly and G2 Prix du Conseil de Paris victor One Foot In Heaven (Ire) (Fastnet Rock {Aus}) and G3 Prix du Prince d'Orange and G3 Pride S. runner-up Queen (Fr) (Kingman {GB}).

Galileo’s Magical Lagoon Swoops For Flame of Tara Success

Zhang Yuesheng's 2-year-old filly Magical Lagoon (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), who crossed the line first in a June 28 Dundalk barrier trial, shaped with promise on the front end when fourth to Albula (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) contesting an Aug. 2 one-mile maiden at Naas in her only official start and the Jessica Harrington trainee exacted revenge on that reopposing rival by swooping late for a career high in Friday's G3 Manguard Plus Irish EBF Flame of Tara S. over the same trip at The Curragh. The 9-2 chance made an alert exit from the inside stall and raced in a handy fourth through modest early fractions set by Kiss You Later (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). Shuffled back to fifth and under pressure with three furlongs remaining, she regained fourth spot entering the final furlong and kept on relentlessly under a continued drive to deny 4-5 favourite Albula by 3/4-of-a-length in the dying strides. Curragh maiden winner She's Trouble (Ire) (Fracas {Ire}) kept on well to finish best of the remainder, two lengths further adrift in third.

“She was just a bit clueless the last day [at Naas], she needed the mile and stayed on very strongly,” said Jessica Harrington. “She was good today and will probably have just one more run this year. She's in the [Oct. 8 G1] Fillies' Mile [at Newmarket] and might just go for that. She's a lovely filly, she's going to be a mile-and-a-half filly next year and I'm delighted for Mr Zhang, who now has a Group-winning 2-year-old this year.”

Magical Lagoon, the latest of 13 foals, becomes the fifth black-type performer produced by G3 Preis der Winterkonigin victrix Night Lagoon (Ger) (Lagunas {GB}), herself a half-sister to MSW G1 Deutsches Derby runner-up Night Tango (Ger) (Acatenango {Ger}) and one of three black-type performers out of Listed Dusseldorf-Preis winner Nenuphar (Ire) (Night Shift). Thus, the April-foaled bay is a half-sister to MG1SW G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S.-winning sire Novellist (Ire) (Monsun {Ger}), German Group 3 second Nuntius (Ger) (Dalakhani {Ire}), Listed Derby-Trial second Nerud (Bernardini) and the stakes-placed Ninfea (Ger) (Selkirk). Ninfea is the dam of last term's G2 Prix Chaudenay runner-up Nemean Lion (Ger) (Golden Horn {GB}) and the stakes-placed Nayala (GB) (Maxios {GB}).

Muhaarar’s Razzle Dazzle Another Rising Star at Newmarket

Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum's homebred 2-year-old colt Razzle Dazzle (GB) (Muhaarar {GB}) finished clear of the remainder when a promising debut second over Newmarket July's seven-furlong strip in his Aug. 6 debut last time and stepped forward to claim 'TDN Rising Stardom' with a most taking display in Friday's MansionBet Watch And Bet British EBF Novice S. back over the same course and distance. The Richard Hannon trainee and 10-11 favourite was swiftly into stride, despite jinking right at the break, and gained an immediate lead. In command throughout, he had all rivals on the stretch when bounding clear approaching the final furlong and extended his buffer under mild coaxing up the hill to outclass Unilateralism (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}) by an impressive 5 1/2 lengths.

“He is a lovely, big colt and I thought he would run well first time–and he duly did–and he would have improved for that,” commented trainer Richard Hannon. “He shaped with lots of promise first time and was still making up ground going to the line. I was even more pleased today, as he jumped out and was not keen, and he looked a very good horse out there in front. Let's see how he comes out of the race, he is in all the big races and has entries in the [G2] Champagne, [G2] Royal Lodge and [G1] Dewhurst. We will talk to Sheikh Obaid and decide what to do. It is all about next year with him, not about getting it while you can, as he is a long-term project.”

Razzle Dazzle, whose advance entries include an engagement in the Oct. 9 G1 Dewhurst S., is the sixth of seven foals and fourth scorer produced by an unraced granddaughter of G3 Prix du Bois victrix The Perfect Life (Ire) (Try My Best), herself a full-sister to MG1SW sire Last Tycoon (Ire) and the dam of G3 Gordon S.-winning sire Rabah (GB) (Nashwan) and G1 Cheveley Park S. third Najiya (GB) (Nashwan). The Perfect Life is also kin to MGSW sire Astronef (Ire) (Be My Guest) and to the dams of G1SW distaffers Immortal Verse (Ire) (Pivotal {GB}), Tie Black (Ire) (Machiavellian), Valentine Waltz (Ire) (Be Mu Guest) and Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch). The March-foaled homebred bay is full to a yearling colt.
