Sixth CHOA Conference Held

The sixth China Horse Owners Alliance (CHOA) conference was held at Yulong International Hotel on Sept. 2. Zhang Yuesheng, who owns Yulong Horse Group, was reelected as the Chairman of CHOA. CHOA Secretary-General and Vice-Chairman Huang Quincai revealed that 60 million RMB/$9.3 million will be devoted to Chinese prizemoney over the next three years, with 10 million RMB for use in 2022, 20 million RMB set aside for 2023 and 30 million RMB allocated for 2024. There are also now 27 stallions in China whose progeny are eligible for CHOA races including Group 1 winner Sousa (NZ) (Galileo {Ire}).

Topping the Sept. 3 Yulong Autumn Sale, organised by Yulong and Zhongxin Auction, was a Sousa (NZ) yearling half-brother to dual Chinese Horse of the Year Hui Tong Tian Xia (Chn), who brought 600,000RMB ($93,000). After her full-sister Shen Qi Shi Zu (Chn) (Sousa {NZ}) won the 600,000RMB ($124,930) CHOA Breeders' Cup over 1000 metres on Sept. 4, a yearling filly was privately purchased by Wang Dequan, an Inner Mongolia horse owner and CHOA Vice-Chairman for 800,000RMB/$124,000.

Half-Sister to Poetic Flare Highlight of First ThoroughBid Catalogue

Mariora (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}), a half-sister to G1 QIPCO 2000 Guineas winner Poetic Flare (Ire) (Dawn Approach {Ire}), is one of 18 horses catalogued for the first ThoroughBid Online Sale. Featuring horses-in-training from the yards of Andrew Balding, Jamie Osborne and Fergal O'Brien among others, as well as broodmares across both codes, bidding will start at 10 a.m. on Sept. 12.

Selling as lot 8 from Joe Hanly, the 7-year-old mare was served by both New Bay (GB) and Mehmas {Ire}) this year and is also a half-sister to two-time stakes winner and dual Group-3 third Glamorous Approach (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}).

Another half-sister to a Group 1 winner is Jolie Comtesse (Fr) (Evasive {GB}) (lot 6). Offered by Dunraven Stud, she is a half-sister to G1 Goodwood Cup winner Trueshan (Fr) (Planteur {Ire}) and is in foal to Planteur.

There are also several noteworthy horses-in-training, including: dual bumper winner Leading Theatre (Ire) (Leading Light {Ire}) (lot 12) from the yard of Fergal O'Brien and the G2 Norfolk S.-placed Imperial Force (Ire) (Camacho {GB}) (lot 11) from Andrew Balding.

Tattersalls Somerville Sale Kicks Off on Tuesday

The first edition of the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, which is the rebranded Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale, will be staged at Park Paddocks on Tuesday. Also held in Newmarket in 2020 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the sale remains geared towards precocious youngsters and the catalogue features 292 lots. Despite its short existence, the sale already has 10 black-type winners just in the last two years, with the leading graduates being G2 Lowther S. victress Miss Amulet (Ire) (Sir Prancealot {Ire}) and G3 Molecomb S. hero Steel Bull (Ire) (Clodovil {Ire}). The 2020 edition has yielded a trio of stakes winners amongst its 41 winners thus far: Italian Group 3 winner Windstormblack (GB) (Brazen Beau {Aus}), Royal Ascot listed scorer Chipotle (GB) (Havana Gold {GB}) and Sept. 4 G3 Sirenia S. heroine Eve Lodge (GB) (Ardad {Ire}). The sale begins at 10 a.m.
