Agave Will Skip The Cazoo Oaks

Group 3 winner Agave (GB) (Dubawi {Ire}) has been removed from the G1 Cazoo Oaks field, leaving 18 fillies in the hunt for the fillies' Classic, following the release of the current acceptances on Friday. The Juddmonte homebred won her first three starts, including the G3 Prix Penelope on Apr. 2, but she was last seen running second in the G2 Prix Greffulhe at Saint-Cloud this past Sunday. Impressive G3 Tattersalls Musidora S. victress and 'TDN Rising Star' Emily Upjohn (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), for John and Thady Gosden, remains the market leader.

Another filly out of a Classic is Group 3 winner Hermana Estrella (Ire) (Starspangledbanner {Aus}), who will miss the G1 French 1000 Guineas on Sunday and instead point for the Irish equivalent on May 22, as trainer Fozzy Stack deemed the underfoot conditions to be too dry for his filly. Although she has only made one start, the Paul Smith, Joe Poulin and J. Carthy colourbearer made it count, taking the G3 Coolmore Stud Irish EBF Fillies Sprint S. at Naas last May.

“It was just the weather forecast,” he said. “The forecast is very dry and very hot for the weekend in Paris–around 28C or 29C–and so we are just going to wait for the Curragh on the following Sunday. She is in good form.”

Dubawi’s Alfred Munnings A New TDN Rising Star

Aidan O'Brien trainee Alfred Munnings (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}–Best In The World {Ire}, by Galileo {Ire}) was all the rage for Friday's seven-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden at Leopardstown and justified market support, and then some, with a dominant debut performance, earning a TDN Rising Star rosette by 4 1/2 lengths on his birthday. The stable had won the contest in recent years with G1 Dewhurst S.-winning sire War Command (War Front) and G2 Vintage S.-winning sire War Decree (War Front) and also prepared Gleneagles (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) to finish fourth in 2014. The eventual winner was away sharply and shadowed the leader in a close-up second through halfway. Sent to the front off the home turn, the 8-11 favourite quickened beyond recall soon after passing the quarter-mile marker and maintained a high tempo under minimal encouragement in the latter stages to easily outclass Segomo (Ire) (Zoffany {Ire}) by daylight.

“Aidan [O'Brien] was very happy with that and the plan is to go for the [Listed] Chesham [S. at Royal Ascot],” revealed Ballydoyle representative Chris Armstrong. “He was very professional, he knew his job and delivered on the promise he's shown so far. He's a good mover and has the pedigree behind him. Fingers crossed now he has a good chance in the Chesham. Hopefully, it's a proper maiden and he's won it very impressively.”

Alfred Munnings, half-brother to a weanling colt by Wootton Bassett (GB), is the third of four foals and second winner out of G3 Give Thanks S. victrix Best In The World (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), the first being last year's runaway G1 Epsom, G1 Irish and G1 Yorkshire Oaks-winning sensation Snowfall (Jpn) (Deep Impact {Jpn}). Best In The World is a full-sister to three pattern-race winners, namely MG1SW G1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe-winning superstar Found (Ire), GSW G1 Epsom Oaks and G1 Irish Oaks placegetter Divinely (Ire) and G3 Noblesse S. victrix Magical Dream (Ire). Found's first foal is G2 Vintage S. victor and GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf and G1 St James's Palace S. placegetter Battleground (War Front). The May-foaled bay's second dam is G1 Matron S. and G1 Lockinge S. heroine Red Evie (Ire) (Intikhab).

UK Thoroughbred Industry Economic Impact Study Begins

A third UK Thoroughbred industry economic impact study began on Friday, following confirmation of funding support from the Horserace Betting Levy Board (HBLB). The third study of its kind was commissioned by the Thoroughbred Breeders' Association (TBA), with additional financial support from the Racing Foundation, and will provide an up-to-date audit of the British market, analysing the impact of wider economic and political factors to identify emerging challenges and opportunities. PwC has been appointed to conduct the study. The wider racing ecosystem will also be explored in the study, including the source and size of its horse population, international trade and subsequent impact on the future racing programme.

Claire Sheppard, TBA Chief Executive, said, “We are incredibly grateful to the Levy Board and the Racing Foundation for their support of this vitally important piece of work. The previous studies enabled us to firstly assess the environment in which thoroughbred breeders were operating in, but also provide evidence to build our long-term strategies. Both the emerging and more established trends in these reports demonstrated areas of the sector at risk, which were subsequently addressed by the introduction of initiatives to influence market behaviour and assist the industry.

“This third study will give us an up-to-date overview of the market and allow us to monitor the influence of industry incentives such as the Great British Bonus Scheme.  It will also examine the supply of thoroughbreds to British racing and the effects of global trade and competition on the sport. Crucially, the results of this project will show us if our areas of focus remain key priorities for the future or if there is evidence that we should re-align parts of our strategy to new, emerging threats and opportunities.”

Balmoral Show Returns To Regular Calendar Slot

The 2022 Ulster Bank Balmoral Show returned to its usual spot on the calendar, the middle of May, on Friday. The Irish Thoroughbred Breeders' Association sponsored the Race Horse to Riding Horse Class, which featured guest judges WP Mullins and retired champion National Hunt jockey Richard Johnson. The winner was Felicity McConnell aboard Easy Pleased (Ire) (Mahler {GB}). The 5-year-old gelding was bred by Brendan Nolan.

ITBA's Kerry Ryan said, “ITBA has proudly sponsored this class since 2017 as part of its welfare initiative. It's wonderful to see retired racehorses being given a second career and for them to be so clearly enthused about rising to the challenge and enjoying the opportunity awarded to them.”
