Noble Drama Rallies To Take City Of Dania Stakes

Harold Queen's Noble Drama called on his family's class to rally from far off the pace to win Sunday's $60,000 City of Dania, a rapidly run contest in which multiple Grade 1 stakes-placed Jesus' Team, the 7-10 favorite, was never a factor while finishing fifth in a highly anticipated return to action.

The City of Dania, a one-turn mile overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up, headlined an 11-race program that wrapped up a weekend of racing action that included Papetu's victorious comeback in the $75,000 Carry Back and Competitive Speed's return to winning form in the Hallandale Beach on Saturday.

Out of a half-sister to 2010 Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Big Drama and full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Sheer Drama, Noble Drama with Emisael Jaramillo collected his seventh career stakes victory at Gulfstream Park with a 1 1/2-length decision over pacesetter I'm a G Six.

“What a horse,” said trainer David Fawkes, who also campaigned Noble Drama's more famous family members.

Jesus' Team, who finished sixth in the $10 million Grade 1 Dubai World Cup March 27 after checking in second behind Knicks Go in the $3 million Grade 1 Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Jan. 23, raced evenly under Samy Camacho while proving unable to employ the stretch kick that powered him to a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile and a third-place finish in the Grade 1 Preakness Stakes.

“Samy said he felt good but that maybe he needed a race,” trainer Jose D'Angelo said. “I know he had a lot of weight. Now we just have to check him and make a decision.”

Jesus' Team carried 127 pounds as the starting highweight while conceding between five and 12 pounds to his seven rivals, including five pounds to Noble Drama.

The victorious 6-year-old gelding, who went to post as the 5-2 second betting choice, was coming off a late-rallying triumph in the My Name's Jimmy overnight handicap May 22 off a four-month layoff.

“That last race took a lot out of him but it gave him plenty of time to recover. This week while training he's been bucking and playing like a yearling,” Fawkes said. “He's so much fun. He shows up every time.”

I'm a G Six, who was coming off an impressive optional claiming allowance victory, was hustled to an early lead by jockey Rajiv Maragh and proceeded to set a blistering pace, putting up eye-catching fractions of :22.81 for the first quarter and :45.12 for the first half mile and 1:08.89 for six furlongs. Pro Quality chased the pacesetter into the stretch under Chantal Sutherland and briefly appeared on his way to victory inside the eighth pole, but Noble Drama loomed in full strike on the far outside and claimed the victory. I'm a G Six battled back to finish second, a neck ahead of Pro Quality.

Noble Drama ran the mile in 1:35.09.

Warrior’s Pride Goes Wire-To-Wire In Gulfstream Turf Sprint

Trainer Antonio Cioffi was understandably thrilled with Warrior's Pride's gate-to-wire victory in Sunday's $100,000 Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. but he was especially delighted to win a race named to honor the memory of the late and beloved racing official.

“I very happy to win this race, because when I came into this country Bob Umphrey helped me so much. At the time, he was the racing secretary at Calder,” said the Italian-born Cioffi, who emigrated from Venezuela in 2001. “I'm proud to win this race.”

The Bob Umphrey Turf Sprint, a five-furlong turf dash for 3-year-olds and up, wrapped up the Fourth of July Weekend stakes action that got underway on Saturday's Summit of Speed card, highlighted by Ce Ce's triumph in the $350,000 Grade 2 Princess Rooney Invitational and Miles Ahead's mild upset victory in the $200,000 Grade 3 Smile Sprint Invitational.

Warrior's Pride, a 3-year-old son of Poseidon's Warrior who was sent to post at 9-1, rocketed to the early lead as Caribou Club, the 8-5 favorite, and Ete Indien, the 7-2 second choice, got away slowly. The Cioffi trainee set fractions of :22.03 for the first quarter and :44.92 seconds for the first half-mile while maintaining a clear lead into the stretch under Emisael Jaramillo. Tiger Blood, the veteran turf sprinter with 19 career victories, made a late surge from off the pace but fell a neck short of catching the pacesetter. Yes I Am Free finished third, 1 ¼ lengths back.

Warrior's Pride earned a $25,000 'Win Only' bonus available to Florida-bred starters as well as the winner's share of the purse after running five furlongs in :57.30 over a 'good' turf course. The Umphrey score was Warrior's Pride's second turf victory in two starts on the grass. He captured the five-furlong Texas Glitter during the Championship Meet prior to finishing fifth in the 6 ½-furlong Roar on the main track.

“He's so speedy. This is the race for him,” Cioffi said.

Noble Drama, Caribou Club Make Victorious Returns At Gulfstream

Harold Queen's Noble Drama made a triumphant return from a four-month layoff, closing from last to eke out a victory in Saturday's $60,000 The Name's Jimmy Handicap at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Out of a half-sister to 2010 Eclipse Award-winning sprinter Big Drama and full sister to multiple Grade 1 winner Sheer Drama, Noble Drama showed his class while rallying off a pedestrian early pace to prevail by a nose over Glory of Florida in the mile overnight handicap for 3-year-olds and up.

“He gives you 150 percent every time,” said trainer David Fawkes, who conditioned Big Drama and Sheer Drama, both Queen homebreds.

Unraced since finishing second in the Jan. 16 Sunshine Classic at Gulfstream, the homebred 6-year-old gelding dropped back to trail the six-horse field as Pro Quality showed the way during a first quarter of a mile in 24.59 seconds on his way to half-mile in 47.85. Emisael Jaramillo asked Noble Drama for some run leaving the backstretch and the son of Gone Astray responded with a four-wide rally to enter contention at the top of the stretch. The Florida-bred veteran kicked in through the stretch to narrowly prevail over a rail-rallying Glory of Florida.

“Emisael said it took him a little time to get him moving, but where he was sitting going into the turn, I was comfortable, although he did have to go four wide,” Fawkes said. “I wasn't so comfortable right there [at the finish line].”

Noble Drama, the 6-5 favorite who carried highweight of 122 pounds, ran a mile in 1:36.39 to claim his sixth career stakes victory and boost is career bankroll over $700,000.

“Look at the weight he's gained. We gave him three months off, brought him in and breezed him four times, and he won,” Fawkes said. “He's such a neat horse.”

Glory of Florida, who was ridden by Samy Camacho, finished a neck in front of pacesetter Pro Quality and jockey Miguel Vasquez.

Caribou Club Returns a Winner in Sunny Isles
Glen Hill Farm's Caribou Club, coming off a year layoff, drove to the lead down the stretch to win Saturday's $60,000 Sunny Isles over Harry's Ontheloose. Tiger Blood was third.

Winner of the 2019 Baltimore-Washington International Turf (G3) in 2019, Caribou Club, a 7-year-old gelding by City Zip trained by Thomas Proctor and ridden by Edwin Gonzalez, covered a firm five-furlong turf course in :55.01.

Caribou Club, who raced only three times in 2020, has now won 10 of 26 starts on the turf.

Gulfstream Park: $650,000 Guarantee In Saturday’s Rainbow 6 Jackpot

The 20-cent Rainbow 6 jackpot pool will be guaranteed at $650,000 for Saturday's program at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

The popular multi-race wager went unsolved Friday for the seventh consecutive racing day since a March 27 mandatory payout. Tickets with all six winners were each worth $1,406.70.

The jackpot pool is only paid out when there is a single unique ticket sold with all six winners. On days when there is no unique ticket, 70 percent of that day's pool goes back to those bettors holding tickets with the most winners, while 30 percent is carried over to the jackpot pool.

Saturday's sequence spans Races 6-11 and includes maiden special weights on the turf. In Race 7 and 3-year-olds and up in Race 9. Trainer Christophe Clement has the program favorite in both heats, sophomore Vancouver colt Q F Seventy Five and 4-year-old City Zip colt Voodoo Zip.

The feature comes in Race 10, an entry-level optional claiming allowance for older females going a one-turn mile. Drawing Away Stable's Don't Get Khozy is favored at 8-5 on the morning line, winning twice at the distance in five starts during the recently concluded Championship Meet for trainer Antonio Sano.

There will also be a carryover of $2,063.56 in the $1 Super Hi-5 for Saturday's opener.

Kelsey's Cross, Sutherland Score In Friday Allowance
Sanford Bacon and trainer Patrick Biancone's Grade 2-placed Kelsey's Cross, exiting a string of 12 consecutive stakes, dropped into allowance company Friday and made her familiar late run down the center of the track to take the featured race at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden by Chantal Sutherland, her second win from eight starts at the spring-summer meet, Kelsey's Cross ($11) won for the first time since capturing the Ginger Punch over the Gulfstream turf last June. The winning time in second-level event for older females was 1:33.23 over a firm course.

“It feels awesome. We gave her a little break before the start of the season and we just thought, 'Wow, she's going to have a great year,'” Biancone's daughter and assistant, Andie Biancone, said. “She looks so good, and she just keeps getting so unlucky. She has all the talent but she's never had the right trip. Chantal just gave her the most perfect ride and we couldn't have asked for anything better.”

Shifty She, unraced since December 2019, and last out winner La Babia battled on the lead through testing fractions of 23.92 seconds for the quarter-mile, 46.47 for a half and 1:08.83 after six furlongs. Racing on the far outside, Kelsey's Cross came with a steady run through the stretch to edge 8-5 favorite Lashara by a half-length. Hotsy Totsy was third.

“She really needs that good trip, but once she has that spot, she's awesome,” Biancone said. “She's all try.”

Kelsey's Cross, 5, had been winless in six starts since the Ginger Punch, finishing off the board in her last three, including the Via Borghese and Sunshine Filly & Mare Turf during Gulfstream's Championship Meet. Third in the 2020 Hillsborough (G2) and 2019 Wonder Again, she was sixth last out in the Endeavour (G3) Feb. 6 at Tampa Bay Downs.

Biancone said the connections will explore all options for Kelsey's Cross' next start.

“Who knows? There's always some nice little stakes here this summer and we could always go up to New York. She loves New York,” she said. “We'll see what Patrick has planned.”

Notes: Jockey Emisael Jaramillo rode back-to-back winners Friday with Tellington ($11) in Race 6 and Lauda Speed ($6.20) in Race 7 … Edwin Gonzalez also doubled, aboard Shikaka ($2.80) in Race 3 and Serenade a Kitten ($9.60) in Race 9.
