Penny Breakage, ‘Dynamic Morning Line’ Added to Emerald Downs Lineup

Emerald Downs will offer Penny Breakage on all wagers Emerald Downs commencing with its 55-day 2024 season that begins on Saturday, May 4.

Historically, wagers were rounded down payouts to the nickel or dime which made sense when most wagers were made with cash on track. However, the change was made because of the evolution of account wagering and vouchers on track. Emerald Downs estimates that penny breakage will return approximately $400,000 in additional payouts to bettors.

Also starting in 2024, Emerald Downs will offer a “Dynamic Morning Line.” The morning line, which is typically made 4-7 days prior to race day, will now be updated using the same system and formula before each race day to reflect scratches and changes. Then, beginning in the second race each day, the line will be updated approximately 20 minutes to post time. This update will reflect wagering in closed pools such as the Daily Double, Pick 3, and Pick 4.

The updated lines will be displayed on the track's simulcast broadcast.

“There have been effects to calculate live projected payouts, but Emerald Downs will be the first to update and use the morning line in a format that can be efficiently communicated to bettors,” explained track president Phil Ziegler. “If a 5-1 morning line horse has lower will-pays than a 3-1 horse, we will update the line to reflect this wagering which should help guide bettors.”

Emerald Downs will also assist players by keeping live odds displayed until the final horse enters the gate.

Emerald Downs offers a traditional 50 cent Pick 6 each race day featuring an 8% takeout, along with a Pentafecta (Super High 5) on the final race, also with an 8% takeout. All Win, Place and Show wagers will be at 16%, Exactas and Daily Doubles at 21% and all other wagers at 23%.

Frazier, White and Flag de Lune Join Washington Racing Hall of Fame

Jockey Basil Frazier, Grade I-winning mare Flag de Lune (Flag Officer), and racing writer/broadcaster Jon White will be inducted into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame this summer, Emerald Downs announced Wednesday.

Washington's Horse of the Year in 1984, Flag de Lune was a multiple stakes winner on dirt, including the inaugural running of the Longacres Lassies S., and became a Grade I winner on turf when she won the the 1984 Ramona H. at Del Mar.

A native of Spokane, Washington, Frazier rode in Canada and the United States, retiring in 1985 with 2,218 career victories. Frazier's crowning moment was a dramatic victory aboard Times Rush in the 1974 Longacres Mile.

Another native of Spokane, White has been a local and national force in racing media for over five decades. Beginning with Daily Racing Form as chart-caller at age 19, White has been a publicist, television host, morning-line maker and steward, his byline appearing in The BloodHorse, Los Angeles Times, Thoroughbred Record, Canadian Horse, and The Washington Thoroughbred, among others.

White currently writes a weekly column for Xpressbet.com, appears weekly on Steve Byk's national racing show, and produces morning lines for Santa Anita and Del Mar, including the morning lines for eight Breeders' Cups.

“What a tremendous honor it is for this Washington-bred to go into the Washington Racing Hall of Fame,” White said. “I consider it to be the pinnacle of my career in racing. I just wish that my father [Quentin White] was still alive to see this. As a lifelong racing fan, he'd be over the moon.”

The official induction ceremony will be held Aug. 10 at Emerald Downs. Also to be honored at the ceremony, longtime trainer and former NFL and University of Washington running back Junior Coffey will be presented with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement award.

Slew’s Tiz Whiz Earns Second Washington Horse of the Year Title

Slew's Crew Racing's multiple stakes winner Slew's Tiz Whiz (Slew's Tiznow) was named Washington's top racehorse for the second year in a row at the 2023 Washington Thoroughbred annual awards dinner held Feb. 24 at Emerald Downs. The 6-year-old gelding, bred by the late Karl Krieg, also earned the titles of champion sprinter and handicap horse. He is trained by Tom Wenzel.

Earning her third state title was Petra Lewin (Rainbow Meadows Farm) and trainer Charles Essex's homebred star Blazingbellablu (Grazen). Crowned Washington Horse of Year as a 3-year-old in 2021, the now 6-year-old earned champion older filly or mare titles in 2022 and 2023.

Gold Coast Racing III's Freightline (Coat Guard) was named champion 2-year-old colt or gelding and overall champion juvenile runner. Jeff Cissell's Special Diva (Misremembered) earned the juvenile filly title.

Three-year-old honors were divided between champion gelding Company's Dream (Jersey Town) and 2022 Washington 2-year-old filly champion Miss Dynamic (Dynamic Impact).

The 2020 Washington Horse of the Year Bodenheimer (Atta Boy Roy) earned his second champion turf horse title.

Special Racetrack Achievement Awards were given to rider Jose Zunino, trainer Justin Evans and Emerald Downs race starter Mark Gibson.

Also acknowledged with a Special Recognition Award were Wes Petree and Cy Labar, who have ably served in the Emerald Downs Television Department for over 20 years.

The Mark Kaufman Media Award went to retiring Daily Racing Form correspondent Randy Goulding.

For the third year in a row, Blue Ribbon Farm's Conveyance was named sire of the year, while Ron and Nina Hagen's Moscow Symphony, a first and second generation multiple stakes producer, was named broodmare of the year.

The Hagens (El Dorado Farms) were also named Breeders of the Year for the seventh time and John Parker, who was the state's TOBA Award winner in 2022 and has led the Emerald Downs' owner standings for six years (by wins), was honored as Owner of the Year.

Emerald Downs Releases 2024 Stakes Schedule

The 89th edition of the Longacres Mile headlines a 21-race stakes schedule worth $1,150,000 for Emerald Downs at the 55-day meeting from May 4 to Sept. 15. The $150,000 Longacres Mile anchors a stakes quadruple-header Sunday, Aug. 11. Billed as Championship Sunday, it co-features the $50,000 Emerald Distaff for older fillies and mares, $50,000 Muckleshoot Derby for 3-year-olds, and $50,000 Washington Oaks for 3-year-old fillies.

A total of 16 stakes are scheduled on Sundays with five set for Saturdays, including the $50,000 Seattle S. for 3-year-old fillies that kicks off the June 15 stakes schedule. The track's older horse division kicks off Sunday, June 23, with the $50,000 Budweiser S., followed three weeks later by the $50,000 Governor's S. Seven stakes are slated for 2-year-olds, highlighted by the $50,000 Gottstein Futurity at a mile and 70 yards on closing day.

In addition to 21 Thoroughbred stakes, Sunday, Aug. 18 features a pair of QuarterHorse stakes: $30,000 John Deere Juvenile Challenge Championship and $40,000 Bank of America Emerald Championship Challenge.

Opening day, Saturday, May 4, shares a spotlight with the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby. The stable area opens Friday, Feb. 23 with training getting underway Monday, Feb. 26.
