Grace Adler Headlines Chandelier

Grace Adler (Curlin) looks to take her record to three-for-three and provide Hall of Famer Bob Baffert with his 12th victory in Santa Anita's GII Chandelier S. Friday, a “Win and You're in Event” for the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies in November. A debut winner at Del Mar July 31, the $700,000 FTKSEL purchase already secured her spot in the gate for the World Championships with a dominant late-running score in the Sept. 5 GI Del Mar Debutante S., which she won by 11 1/4 lengths over Dance to the Music (Maclean's Music). The chestnut did get the perfect set up that day–with a trio of speedsters leading to a pace collapse–but there is enough speed signed on here to give her a similar set up. This is Grace Adler's first try around two turns, but she is bred to run all day and her performance last out over seven furlongs suggested added distance would be no issue. Baffert–whose 12 wins in this event include five of the last nine renewals–also saddles a maiden of three starts in Censorship (Tonalist), who was second to Desert Dawn (Cupid) last out going a mile at Del Mar Aug. 26.

Several flashy first-out winners take on the more accomplished favorite here, including 'TDN Rising Stars' Electric Ride (Daredevil) and Ain't Easy (Into Mischief). Trained by John Sadler, Electric Ride pressed the pace early and blew her rivals away in the lane for an 8 1/2-length graduation in her six-panel unveiling at Del Mar Aug. 28, earning an 85 Beyer Speed Figure. A $400,000 KEESEP acquisition, the Phil D'Amato-trained Ain't Easy bided her time in mid-pack early, circled the field turning for home and charged clear to don cap and gown by 5 1/4 lengths in her sprint debut in SoCal Aug. 21. D'Amato also sends out GII Sorrento S. winner Elm Drive (Mohaymen), who was part of the early pace duel in the Del Mar Debutante and paid the price, fading to seventh.

Dead Heat Propels Sadler To Second In Del Mar Trainer Standings

When Little Liliana and Kalon finished in a dead-heat for win in Saturday's fifth race at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club in Del Mar, Calif., it was a double-dip victory for John Sadler, who trains them both.

Not even the camera could separate Little Liliana, a Joe Turner homebred 3-year-old daughter of Square Eddie ridden by Umberto Rispoli, and Kalon, a 4-year-old Kentucky-bred daughter of Bernardini ridden by Florent Geroux, when they hit the wire in the five-furlong turf sprint for maiden fillies and mares.

It was the second career start for Little Liliana and the seventh for Kalon.

“I've been involved in lots of dead heats, but none with both of them my horses for the win,” Sadler said this morning. “That's really rare. That's like a lunar eclipse or something. I've never seen that.”

The double victory, and another in the opening race on the card from Electric Ride with Joe Bravo aboard, enabled Sadler to leapfrog Phil D'Amato, Bob Baffert, and Mark Glatt from fifth to second in the trainer standings. Peter Miller leads with 20 wins from 113 starters, Sadler has 11 from 68, while D'Amato (13/84), Baffert (13/53), and Glass (13/66) are next.

Sadler, who has three Del Mar training titles on his record, gets credit for four wins in three races from the finale on the Friday program to the fifth-race double.

Bravo notched his second consecutive victory when he guided Doncic home for Sadler in Friday's nightcap and made it three in a row, and back-to-backs for Sadler, in Saturday's opener.

Sadler had no representatives in the second, third or fourth races before doubling up in the fifth. The streak ended when Luvluv finished second in the ninth race, then Flagstaff finished third in the Pat O'Brien Stakes.

“We'll take it,” Sadler said.

Daredevil Filly Romps To ‘Rising Star’-dom at Del Mar

Electric Ride (f, 2, Daredevil–Why Oh You, by Yes It's True) stormed home through the final furlong to earn 'TDN Rising Star' honors on her Del Mar unveiling Saturday afternoon.

Sent off at odds of 23-5 beneath an in-form Joe Bravo, the Indiana-bred bay broke alertly and took up a pace-pressing position from second through an opening quarter-mile that was timed in :22.19. Appearing to have front-running Gritty Girl (Street Boss) when she wanted, Electric Ride poked her head in front at the five-sixteenths pole, was shoved on entering the stretch and widened at will before being taken in hand for the closing stages. The winning margin was 8 1/2 lengths over 7-5 favorite Valentina Ghada (Practical Joke). Captaire (Uncle Mo), the half-sister to Horse of the Year California Chrome (Lucky Pulpit), never landed a blow in finishing 20 lengths behind Electric Ride in fourth.

Electric Ride was the third most expensive of her sire's 28 yearlings reported as sold in 2020 after hammering for $130,000 at the Fasig-Tipton October Sale. Consigned to this year's OBS April Sale, she worked a furlong in a smooth :9 4/5 and was knocked down to owner Michael Talla for $250,000, the priciest of 19 of Daredevil's current juveniles to sell this year. Electric Ride is a maiden 'Rising Star' for her Lane's End-based sire.

Why Oh You, a winning half-sister to SW Amapola (Broken Vow), was bred to both Maximum Security and Tiz the Law in 2021.
