Caravaggio Colt Tops Second Day Of Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale

The Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale continued in robust fashion during the second and final session with a son of Caravaggio lighting up the sale ring when selling for 240,000 guineas. The clearance rate remained a feature of the sale, finishing on 88 percent, whilst the turnover of 10,408,500 guineas was the fourth highest for the sale since 2008.

SackvilleDonald's Alastair Donald secured the attractive colt by first-season sire Caravaggio for 240,000 guineas after seeing off the efforts of Irish trainer Michael O'Callaghan. The son of the Galileo mare Bright Sapphire is a half-brother to the group-placed colt Wall of Fire.

“He is for a new Hong Kong client, he will go out to Hong Kong at the end of the season,” revealed Donald. “He will be pre-trained in England, he is a lovely big horse and he has a nice pedigree. He breezed well for a big horse and looks the type to do well in Hong Kong.”

Donald added: “They don't race until they are 3-year-olds, so don't want a 'here and now' horse. The sire looks like he has got a very nice 2-year-old already and this is the first I have bought by the sire. I did like the yearlings – they are particularly good walkers, and this horse's movement is very good.”

The colt was sold by Yeomanstown Stud, who bought the colt at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale for 155,000 guineas. Yeomanstown Stud's David O'Callaghan commented;

“He is a beautiful colt, he breezed really well and has a great attitude. We're very pleased, he was always a lovely horse and he hasn't missed a day.”

Kuwaiti buyer Sheikh Abdullah Almalek Alsabah bought the second highest priced lot for the day when going to 185,000 guineas to secure the Union Rags colt out of Careless Jewel. Named Tattered Flag, the February born colt was bought last September by Tom Whitehead of Powerstown Stud for $115,000 and was part of a three-horse draft that included lot 90, a colt by the fellow U.S.-based sire Practical Joke. He made 140,000 guineas and was bought by trainer Michael O'Callaghan.

“I am very pleased,” said Whitehead. “They are two nice horses, and the Union Rags will be a lovely horse later in the year.”

Whitehead's 2020 buying mission took place during the real depths of the COVID pandemic with travel restrictions and problems, but he is now obviously delighted that he managed to make the journey stateside;

“It was touch and go whether we'd get to the U.S. last year. That has been a great start, but we are only halfway there – we've another seven or eight to sell”

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls Craven Breeze Up Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“We introduced the £250,000 Craven Royal Ascot/Group 1 Bonus this year, in addition to the lucrative £15,000 Craven Breeze Up Bonus and it is clear that owners have embraced these unprecedented bonuses. We have seen solid and diverse demand at all levels of the market from start to finish which has produced the best Craven Breeze Up clearance rate since 2000 and key indicators which have held up well, especially when taken in the context of the COVID – related challenges and restrictions which we are all still grappling with and which continue to hinder international travel.

“Nevertheless, to hear consistently positive feedback from owners, trainers, agents and consignors about the bonuses has been gratifying, and reinforces our commitment to exploring as many innovative ways as possible to reward owners who buy at Tattersalls with extra prize money. There is no doubt that we will see plenty of this crop of Craven Breeze Up graduates performing at a high level and it would be even more pleasing than usual if the Royal Ascot and Group 1 bonuses were won in the coming months.

“Despite the prolonged difficulties with international travel, overseas buyers have again demonstrated their appetite for high class Tattersalls breeze up 2-year-olds. Buyers from America, Bahrain, Dubai, France, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and Singapore have all been active, many of them using the live internet bidding platform, and as well as paying tribute to the consignors who have as ever presented an outstanding collection of two year olds, we must again commend everyone for their patience with the regulations and determination to overcome the obstacles we continue to face. We are still having to conduct sales under strict guidelines, but as well as looking forward to the forthcoming Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale, we are also looking forward to returning to more normality in the not too distant future.”

The next chance to buy a 'breezer' at Tattersalls is at the Guineas Breeze Up and Horses in Training Sale which takes place from April 28-30, with all lots breezing on the Rowley Mile at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, April 28 before the sale on Friday, April 30.

New Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale To Be Held at Park Paddocks

Following the success of the 2020 Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale staged at Park Paddocks, the sale will now be a permanent fixture in Newmarket and will be renamed the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, in recognition of Somerville Tattersall.

The inaugural sale will be held on Sept. 7, combining the same emphasis on carefully selected, precocious yearlings as its Ascot predecessor and the unique advantages of the Tattersalls Park Paddocks complex in the “Home of Horse Racing.” All Tattersalls Somerville, yearlings will also be eligible for the ever-popular £150,000 Tattersalls October Auction Stakes.

Famously stepping up to the rostrum for the first time at age 22 during the 1885 July Sales when his ailing father's voice failed, Somerville Tattersall was the final member of the eponymous family to lead the company and was pivotal in shaping the modern Tattersalls.

Alongside the innovations that have transformed its physical home, the Tattersalls roster of sales has evolved in tandem with the wider bloodstock world and the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale was launched in 2017 to showcase a select offering of forward, athletic yearlings to purchasers. The sale has quickly established a reputation as a consistent source of top-class juvenile talent.

In the last two years, the sale has produced an impressive nine group/listed performers led by the Group 2 Lowther Stakes winner Miss Amulet and the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes scorer Steel Bull in 2020. The roll of honor also features Group 2 winner Shadn, Group 3 winner Liberty Beach, and five further listed winners including £2,000 purchase Summer Sands, who was subsequently resold as a 2-year-old at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale for 625,000 guineas.

Underpinned by the success of its graduates, the sale has enjoyed remarkable growth year-on-year and last year's renewal posted a record average, median, top lot and turnover with 17 lots selling for 30,000 guineas or more.

Commenting on the new Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony said;

“The catalyst for launching the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale at Park Paddocks was the extraordinary vibrance of last year's relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale. The new Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale will benefit not only from the outstanding facilities at Park Paddocks, but also from Newmarket's unique infrastructure and we are confident that the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, named in honor of one of the central figures in the history of Tattersalls, will harness the momentum established by its predecessor.”

Nominations are currently open for the 2021 Tattersalls Yearling Sales and will close on March 26.

Tattersalls Ascot Sale Renamed; Moved To Park Paddocks

After a successful 2020 renewal of the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale at Park Paddocks that returned records for average, median, top lot and turnover, Tattersalls announced on Wednesday that the sale would become a permanent fixture in Newmarket and be renamed the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale. The first renewal of the sale in its new guise will take place on Sept. 7.

The sale, which has developed a reputation for turning out precocious runners, is named in honour of Somerville Tattersall, who began auctioning at the 1885 July Sales and was the last member of the Tattersall family to lead the company.

The last two years, the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale has produced group-winning 2-year-olds Miss Amulet (Ire), Steel Bull (Ire), Liberty Beach (GB) and Shadn (Ire).

“The catalyst for launching the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale at Park Paddocks was the extraordinary vibrance of last year's relocated Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale,” said Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony. “The new Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale will benefit not only from the outstanding facilities at Park Paddocks, but also from Newmarket's unique infrastructure and we are confident that the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, named in honour of one of the central figures in the history of Tattersalls, will harness the momentum established by its predecessor.”

We Are Ninety Tops Tattersalls Online March 23 Sale

The Tattersalls Online 23rd March Sale, the third online sale to be held by Europe's leading bloodstock auctioneers, saw solid trade headed by the final installment of the complete dispersal from the late Peter Magnier's Brittas House Stud and attracted bidders from a remarkable sixteen different countries.

The Brittas House Stud dispersal provided the top five lots in the sale, led by the listed winner We Are Ninety, who sold in foal to the Group 1 Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Sottsass and with her Calyx filly foal at foot. The 8-year-old mare is out of a full-sister to the Group 1 winners Listen and Sequoyah, and proved to be the star turn in the sale, selling to Michael Donohoe of BBA Ireland for 75,000 guineas.

Commenting on the purchase of the three-in-one package, BBA Ireland's Michael Donohoe said;

“We Are Ninety was an obvious pick; she was a smart performer herself from a very good family, she has a nice foal and it's an exciting cover. The Tattersalls Online platform worked seamlessly and it's a format we are all becoming increasingly comfortable with.”

Also attracting spirited competition were the well-bred Galileo mare Zee Zee Gee, a daughter of a Group 1 winner in Zee Zee Top and a sister to another in Izzi Top, and her yearling filly by No Nay Never, who were purchased by BBA Ireland and Whitehall Stables for 48,000 guineas and 45,000 guineas respectively. The dual winning Zoffany filly Combine was the fourth lot from the Brittas House Stud dispersal to realize in excess of 40,000 guineas, selling to De Burgh Equine for 42,000 guineas.

Percy Willis, a 3-year-old son of Sir Percy offered by Eve Johnson Houghton's Woodway Stables, was another lot to attract plenty of attention with Middleham-based trainer Jedd O'Keeffe seeing off a number of bidders to secure the progressive gelding for 28,000 guineas.

“I was very pleased with the Tattersalls Online sale,” commented Eve Johnson Houghton. “The timing worked perfectly for my two horses and they both sold very well. Today's sale has definitely given me the confidence to use the Tattersalls Online platform again.”

The Tattersalls Online 23rd March Sale recorded the highest level of engagement for a sale on the Tattersalls Online platform yet, with well over a hundred registered bidders from sixteen different countries including Australia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Kuwait, Sweden and the U.S.

After the conclusion of the Tattersalls Online 23rd March Sale, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“The final installment of the Dispersal from the Late Peter Magnier's Brittas House Stud always looked set to be the highlight of the Tattersalls Online 23rd March Sale and so it proved. We were delighted at the confidence placed in the Tattersalls Online platform and each of the six Brittas House Stud lots attracted widespread interest and competitive online bidding. This is only the third Tattersalls Online Sale and the positive response from both vendors and purchasers is encouraging for the future development of Tattersalls Online Sales which have already clearly demonstrated their appeal to domestic and international buyers.”
