Shadwell Draft Heads Final Session Of Record-Breaking Tattersalls Autumn Horses In Training Sale

The final day of the record-breaking Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale was dominated by the Shadwell Estates consignment which was responsible for the top five lots, including the session topping Laatansa who realized 250,000 guineas.

The strength of the earlier sessions continued into the fourth day with significant rises in all key indicators resulting in the sale recording a record turnover, average and median, all of which rose substantially compared with last year's sale.

The top price on the final day was 250,000 guineas for the 2-year-old Laatansa who has finished third on his last two starts for trainer Ed Dunlop. The son of New Bay was greeted by a packed sales ring and after some early brisk flurries, the bidding soon settled into a head-to-head battle between the Najd Stud team and Ronald Rauscher, with the former successful at what is the second highest price for the final session of this sale.

Najd Stud's Saad bin Mishraf had left Park Paddocks bound for Saudi Arabia, leaving Saudi-based trainer and consultant Saud al Qahtani in charge of bidding and taking instructions over the telephone.

“Saad called me and told me not to leave here without this horse. He is a beautiful horse and a lovely physical. He is by a very promising stallion, whose progeny are booming. He has a very good family and we hope he will be a very good horse next year.

“We have bought 14 horses here this week and they are of great quality. We will have a great race in Saudi Arabia at the end of February, our race will be the destination for all the very best horses from Europe and America, and our Jockey Club racing manager is doing a great job.”

Laatansa was third at Newmarket on his most recent appearance and was offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 86. He is out of the Listed placed Rock of Gibraltar mare Louve Rare, herself a half-sister to the Group 2 winner and triple Group 1 placed Loup Breton.

The Najd Stud and Peter and Ross Doyle Bloodstock team purchased fourteen lots this week totaling 2,791,000 guineas, whilst Shadwell Estates' consignment saw a total of 118 lots realise 5,238,500 guineas.

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“An extraordinary renewal of a unique sale. There is no sale in the world quite like the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale and there has never been one quite like the sale that has just taken place.

“Records for turnover, average and median are always notable landmarks for any sale, but when the record margins are so large it suggests that maybe new factors have come into play and to an extent that may have been the case this week. There is no doubt that the major consignment from the late Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum's Shadwell Estates has introduced a new dynamic. A consignment of that size and quality does not go unnoticed and the buyers have seized the rare opportunity to source horses from one of the finest owner/breeder operations in the world.

“Additionally, the numerous racing carnivals that now take place during the Autumn and Winter months throughout the Gulf region have had a huge impact on the sale. Buyers from the Gulf have been major contributors to Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sales for many years, but new racing opportunities have brought buyers from the region in even greater numbers than before and crucially, they have been active at all levels of the market.

“Equally important has been the sustained success-driven demand throughout the sale from Australian connections and this has been despite continued difficulties surrounding travel. There will be around 40 horses heading to Australia from this week's sale and that is in addition to the 30 or so yearlings which were purchased at the recent Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. The Australian buyers deserve huge praise for their collective commitment using every means possible to continue buying here despite being unable to travel and we look forward to them being rewarded with more success along the lines of recent Tattersalls Australian superstars Zaaki and Russian Camelot.

“The strong domestic demand we saw at our yearling sales has also been replicated and we can not only look back on a successful month at Tattersalls, but also take encouragement as we look forward to the Tattersalls December Foal and Mares Sale which, similar to this week, features outstanding consignments from Godolphin, Juddmonte Farms and Shadwell Estates.”

Having enjoyed a stellar year, Nick Bradley Racing will be offering a quartet of Group and Listed winning fillies in training headed by the Group 2 winning three-year-olds Dandalla and Fev Rover, both of whom also boast Classic or Group 1 form. They are joined by Listed winning Oaks runner up Mystery Angel, the Group 3 winning 2-year-old Corazon and the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes fourth Guilded.

The beautifully bred Group 3 Sceptre Fillies' Stakes winning 3-year-old Just Beautiful, beaten only twice in seven lifetime starts for trainer Ivan Furtado, is another filly with massive international appeal as are the Group 3 winners Axana, Have a Good Day, Lullaby Moon, Santosha, Stella Star and the Listed winning, Group 1 placed trio of Que Amoro, Measure of Magic, and Es La Vida.

Tattersalls October Strong To The End

A fortnight of selling at Park Paddocks came to a close on Saturday with an abbreviated, single-session Book 4 bringing the curtain down on the 2021 edition of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. From 98 yearlings catalogued, 74 went through the ring, with the 46 sold adding 184,200gns to the coffers. Topping trade was Throckmorton Stud's Ardad (GB) filly (lot 2004) who was the choice of Con Marnane at 18,000gns.

While Book 4 featured a much more modest level of trade than that seen over the past two weeks, it nonetheless continued the trend of strong trade seen throughout the sale. It marked just the second time in seven years that the average exceeded 4,000gns (it was 4,004gns), and the median of 3,000gns was the session's highest since 2017.

Book 1 set a strong tone for the sale, its figures well clear of its 2020 pandemic-impacted edition, in particular the median of 160,000gns, which was the highest at Book 1 since 2018 and third-highest ever. The continued strength of the middle market was on display at Books 2 and 3; Book 2 set records for aggregate, average and median and surpassed a turnover of 50-million guineas for the first time. Book 3 likewise set records across the board by a long way.

At the conclusion of the 2021 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony said, “Last year's Tattersalls October Yearling Sale was hailed as a story of remarkable resilience in the face of uniquely challenging circumstances. This year it should be hailed for the sustained demand from start to finish at all levels of the market.

“We work hard to attract international buyers every year and the overseas contingent, most notably from America, Australia and throughout the Gulf region, has made a huge contribution throughout the past two weeks, but without doubt the most encouraging feature of the 2021 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has been the domestic British and Irish demand which has been a revelation.

“Book 1 set the ball rolling with a show of strength that saw significant gains in all of the key indicators and gave a hint of things to come with a record number of six figure transactions which demonstrated the depth and diversity amongst the buyers. Books 2 and 3 followed suit with unrelenting competition amongst extraordinary numbers of buyers and records for turnover, average and median which can only inspire confidence for the industry going forward. Similar to Book 1, the number of yearlings at Book 2 selling for 100,000 guineas or more was unprecedented, as was the number of yearlings reaching the 50,000 guineas mark in Book 3.

“We have a magnificent product and the last two weeks at Tattersalls have showcased so many of Europe's finest yearlings to a global audience. The consignors and breeders have shown huge faith in the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale and they have been spectacularly rewarded. Park Paddocks has been teeming with life over the last two weeks and after the ordeals of the past 18 months it has been a real pleasure to see the sales grounds, the bars and the restaurants alive with activity again, reinforcing Newmarket's status as the hub of the European Thoroughbred industry.

“We now have an Autumn Horses in Training Sale of real quality to look forward to, followed by exciting catalogues for both the December Foals and Mares Sales and after the success of the past two weeks we can approach the remainder of the 2021 season at Tattersalls with a degree of optimism.”

Extraordinary Trade Fuels Record Breaking Book 2 At Tattersalls October Yearling Sale

Trade at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale continued in record-breaking fashion with turnover of 17,016,000 guineas on the final day pushing the sale turnover past 50 million guineas for the first time in the sale's history whilst the average and median also recorded new highs. The clearance rate for the sale was a remarkable 88%.

A Time Test colt out of the Rainbow Quest mare Aurelia became the latest successful pinhook for John Foley's Ballyvolane Stud when knocked down for 400,000 guineas to Alastair Donald of SackvilleDonald, following a prolonged bidding duel with trainer Richard Hughes. Ballyvolane Stud has enjoyed significant pinhook success at Book 2 in recent years, selling colts by Lope de Vega and No Nay Never for 325,000 guineas in 2018 and 2019 respectively.

The top-priced foal by his sire in 2020 when purchased for 56,000 guineas at the Tattersalls December Foal Sale, the Time Test colt became the stallion's highest-priced horse sold in the ring to date. He is a half-brother to Harlequeen, who finished third in both the English and Irish Oaks, and comes from the family of Grade 1 winner Forte Dei Marmi.

A delighted John Foley commented:

“He has been very popular this week, he had 20 vets. He is an amazing horse, he has never missed a beat all week. Since we have had him he has been amazing. He is a special horse, the best we have ever had. His attitude, his presence, he is a 'wow' horse.

“He was a lovely, quality, straightforward foal and very well produced by the National Stud – there is a reason he was the dearest Time Test foal. There are some that are nice foals who come back as nice yearlings, but he has done better than we thought. He has developed and he has improved the whole way through.”

Foley had signed for the colt as 'Otilia' last December and revealed: “Otilia is myself and three friends, it is the first one we have pinhooked together. We wanted to take a punt on the stallion, we knew that this lad as foal would cost a few quid and, if he did not work out, we thought with three of us involved the pain wouldn't be too much. It was a fair throw for him as a foal, we were taking a punt on him as a stallion, but sons of Dubawi have done well.

“Time Test has had a great year, he looks very good. His stats are good and I will definitely be using him next year! He will be very popular with breeders.”

Foley continued: “It is amazing to get a result like this as we all work hard – this is a very tough business and there are more hard days than good days. We have great help at home, Donnacha Higgins helps me at home and gives me a hand with the yearlings, and John, my dad, who is 77, mucks out six or seven boxes every day. We have great staff here too, and everyone is doing their best – it makes a huge difference when you have staff who want it to do well, and when it works out it is great.”

Ben McElroy has already demonstrated his admiration for the progeny of Kodiac this week and struck again at 285,000 guineas for a son of Tally-Ho Stud's star stallion. The Croom House Stud consigned colt is out of the Born to Sea mare Taste the Salt, whose first foal Cashew is a winner at two this year. Taste the Salt is a half-sister to the Group 2 Norfolk Stakes winner Baitha Alga.

“For me he is the best colt in the sale, if not maybe the best horse I have seen since I have been at European sales,” enthused the U.S.-based bloodstock agent.

“That's my quintessential horse there. He is a great mover, he has plenty of scope, and the way he behaved out the back, I am delighted to get him. A bit like the filly yesterday, I was worried what he'd cost. I could see him making 400,000 to 500,000 just as easily, but I really think he is a special horse. He goes to the States. There is a bit of stamina there too as the second dam is by Fantastic Light, and goes back to a nice family.”

Of staying in Newmarket for Book 2, McElroy added: “I am done now. I stayed for Book 2 last year, and I just said I'd take a look around and see what was here and I obviously really liked the filly last night and this colt. They were worth staying for. I have bought a wide range of prices, all similar types, but horses in different price ranges.”

The purchase of the Kodiac colt, and a filly by the same sire for 340,000 guineas during Tuesday's session, in addition to five lots purchased during Book 1 brought McElroy's total spend during the October Yearling Sale to over 2 million guineas.

At the conclusion of Book 2 of the 2021 Tattersalls October Yearling Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“At the end of Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale last week we referenced the depth and diversity of the demand, and the momentum established at Book 1 has been very much sustained throughout the three days of a record – breaking Book 2.

“New record turnover at any sale is always an achievement, but for Europe's largest yearling sale to reach new levels as we all strive to return to normality after 18 months of turmoil is pretty extraordinary. Only ten years ago Book 2 of the October Yearling Sale had turnover of a fraction over 25 million guineas and an average price below 40,000 guineas. This year's October Book 2 has broken the 50 million guineas mark for the first time, produced a record average in excess of 80,000 guineas and also an unprecedented median.

“Similar to Book 1, international buyers have again made a massive contribution to the market, with notable participation from American and Australian interests as well as from Hong Kong, Japan and throughout the Gulf region, but perhaps the most encouraging feature of the record – breaking sale has been the domestic demand. British and Irish trainers have been the backbone of the sale and to see such a voracious appetite for quality yearlings, not only at Books 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sale, but also at our Newmarket based yearling sales last month, has been fantastic.

“As ever, we are hugely indebted to the consignors from Britain, Ireland and further afield, who make Books 1 and 2 of the October Yearling Sale the showcase for so many of the finest yearlings to be found in Europe. Consistent quality is the key to attracting the buyers in such numbers and we now turn our attention to Book 3 of the October Yearling Sale where buyers will continue to find yearlings of the highest caliber.”

Book 3 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale starts at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14.
