Tattersalls, Goffs Announce New Policies For Corticosteroids And Bronchodilators

Tattersalls and Goffs are to introduce new restrictions relating to the use of corticosteroids and bronchodilators, including Clenbuterol, for all yearlings, and horses in and out of training including breeze up 2-year-olds, sold at sales conducted by the two sales houses.

The new restrictions will be introduced with effect from the start of the UK and Irish yearling sales season beginning on Sept. 1 with the Goffs UK Premier Yearling Sale.

The new Conditions of Sale will allow buyers to have post-sale testing for corticosteroids and bronchodilators (Clenbuterol), with a positive test for undeclared use of corticosteroids, or any trace of bronchodilators (Clenbuterol) resulting in the subject horse being returnable to the vendor at the option of the purchaser under the Conditions of Sale.

The new conditions are in addition to long standing restrictions on the use of anabolic steroids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, as well as the ban on the use of Bisphosphonates introduced in 2019.

In a joint statement, Tattersalls chairman Edmond Mahony and Goffs Group chief executive Henry Beeby said:

“Both Tattersalls and Goffs are united in maintaining the highest standards of integrity and horse welfare at all of our sales and the new policies relating to the use of corticosteroids and bronchodilators reflect our shared commitment to addressing issues which threaten in any way to undermine confidence in the marketplace.”

Bonus winners include Group 1 winners Japan (GB) (Galileo {Ire}), Fairyland (Ire) (Kodiac {GB}), Line of Duty (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), and Palace Pier (GB) (Kingman {GB}).

“Darvel was very professional today and is another smart October Book 1 horse for Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum,” said trainer Kevin Ryan. “Our owners love the Tattersalls October Book 1 Bonuses for obvious reasons and it is the yearling sale we specifically target. We have now won eight £25,000 bonuses, and we will be back at Book 1 in October looking for more.”

Son Of Showcasing Leads Tattersalls July Sale’s Closing Session

Trade on the second and final session of the two-day Tattersalls July Sale continued in robust fashion with the clearance rate of 96 percent matching yesterday's remarkable figure.

The Tattersalls July Sale always attracts a broad cross-section of buyers from throughout the world and this year was no exception with purchasers from Australia, Bahrain, Hong Kong, Japan, Libya, Morocco, Pakistan, Turkey, the UAE and the U.S. all represented on the buyers sheets.

The top lot on the second day was last time out winner Pawpaw from Clive Cox's Beechdown Stables. The 3-year-old son of Showcasing was knocked down to Tattersalls marketing director Jimmy George for 62,000 guineas (US$82,192) on behalf of dual-purpose trainer Paul Webber.

“Paul has been up here all week doing the hard yards, I have just stood here and waved!” smiled George. “He should be a fun dual-purpose type for Paul.”

Pawpaw, who is out of a half-sister to the Group 1 winner Lend a Hand, won over 1 1/4 miles in June at Lingfield on his fifth career start.

Trainer Karl Burke's Wonderwork, who was owned by his wife Elaine, is bound for Dubai after being knocked down to Dubai-based assistant trainer Alessandro Marconi for 60,000 guineas (US$79,548).

“The horse has some very good form and Night Of Thunder is on fire,” said Marconi, adding: “But he comes from a very good trainer so it will be difficult to match! The horse will stay here for a couple of months and then head to Dubai.”

The 3-year-old gelding won on his debut as a 2-year-old. He has run three times this year and has won or placed on all three starts, and was offered with a 'Timeform' rating of 93.

It was an eventful few minutes for Burke whose star filly Dandalla won the Group 2 Duchess of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket five minutes earlier.

At the conclusion of the 2020 Tattersalls July Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“For a bloodstock sale conducted under normal circumstances to register a clearance rate in excess of 95 percent is quite an achievement. To do so in the current climate and with the prevailing government travel regulations preventing so many regular buyers from attending this week's sales is little short of phenomenal.

“There have been four COVID-affected sales which have taken place at Tattersalls in the past three weeks and the clearance rate at every one of them has exceeded 80 percent. Not for a moment are we pretending that it has been plain sailing at all these sales, but they have all exceeded expectations and have all demonstrated an extraordinary resilience in the face of unprecedented challenges and an enduring appetite for British and Irish bloodstock at all levels of the market.

“Over the two days of the Tattersalls July Sale we have sold horses to buyers from nearly 20 different countries, most of whom have had to explore unconventional ways in which to participate at the sale. Our recently introduced live internet bidding platform has added a new dimension and has been consistently used by international buyers, with many others using the telephone bidding service provided by our team on the ground. While the catalog may understandably have lacked a little of the usual quality and quantity, demand for horses in training and in particular well-bred fillies and mares has given some cause for encouragement in uncertain times. We must thank vendors and purchasers alike, all of whom have shown a determination to keep the wheels of the industry turning in the face of considerable adversity.”

Excelebration Colt Tops Rescheduled Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale

Two lots sold for 100,000 guineas (US$132,471) or more at the postponed Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale. Alan King and Highflyer Bloodstock secured the top lot whilst 13 lots sold for 50,000 guineas (US$66,250) or more.

Highflyer Bloodstock's Anthony Bromley and trainer Alan King have been long standing supporters of the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale and the pair purchased four lots at this year's renewal for 258,000 guineas (US$341,854) including the sale topping Excelebration colt at 140,000 guineas (US$185,510).

“We don't go on times, but unfortunately he did a good time which increased interest in him, and pushed his price,” said Bromley. “We just like to look at them as individuals, their strides and general way of going.”

“This is the horse we really wanted and we had to really push the boat out to get him,” added the agent.

King, fresh from his three-timer at Royal Ascot, added: “Delighted and he is for two long-standing supporters of the yard in Max McNeill and Niall Farrell.”

The colt, who is out of the Mark of Esteem mare Open Book, was consigned by Meadowview Stables who purchased him at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale for just 18,000 euros (US$20,405).

Dolmen Bloodstock, the partnership of Justin Timmons and Danny O'Donovan, were celebrating after their Make Believe filly out of Olivia Pope was knocked down for 105,000 guineas (US$139,134) to Blandford Bloodstock's Richard Brown after he saw off the efforts of David Redvers. The filly received a significant boost on the weekend when her sire's son Mishriff won the Group 1 Prix du Jockey Club.

“It was massive!” commented Timmons on the classic victory on Sunday.

“She has an engine and we were very happy with her breeze. She has been very busy, but it is always hard to gauge,” said Timmons. “We had the right people on her.”

The Kildare-based Dolmen Bloodstock team enjoyed a mighty pinhooking touch, having purchased the filly out of the mare Olivia Pope for just 10,000 euros (US$11,335) at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale.

At the conclusion of the 2020 Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up Sale, Tattersalls Chairman Edmond Mahony commented;

“In the current climate we are all looking to accentuate the positives and I think we can reflect on solid if unspectacular trade at this year's renewal of the Tattersalls Guineas Breeze Up. This is, however, a year where 'solid if unspectacular' is a positive outcome and we would like to thank all those who have participated at today's sale for their contribution. The buyers have worked incredibly hard and the Breeze Up consignors have had to endure uniquely difficult conditions in the run up to the 2020 breeze up sales season, but ultimately everyone can look back on sales which have largely exceeded expectations.

“It has been challenging staging events of this nature with the prevailing COVID related regulations still in place but, despite continued travel restrictions, today's Guineas Breeze Up has seen demand from throughout the world including Australia, Bahrain, Dubai, France, Hong Kong, Italy, Kuwait, Qatar and Spain. The international demand has been accompanied by spirited bidding from the domestic British and Irish buyers and has resulted in some notable pinhooking successes, while the overseas buyers have made use of every possible means at their disposal to participate in the sale, including extensive use of our new live internet bidding platform as well as telephone bidding. It is a tribute to the resilience of the global bloodstock market that we continue to experience this level of international demand and we expect to see further widespread use of the live internet bidding platform at our two-day July Sale which commences tomorrow morning at 10 a.m.”
