Five Fast Femmes Face Off Friday In Fiftieth Rancho Bernardo ‘Cap

Five extra quick fillies and mares will put the pedal to the metal at Del Mar Friday afternoon in the 50th edition of the Grade 3, $100,000 Rancho Bernardo Handicap at six and one-half furlongs.

Favoritism in the dash will be an interesting contest all its own. Three of the fillies are eligible to step into that role off recent efforts – LNJ Foxwoods or La Providencia's Scotish Star, Don Alberto Stable's Stellar Sound and Hronis Racing's Edgeway. All are 4-year-olds, all carry topweight of 123 pounds and all have shown exceptional “lick” in sprint races.

Scotish Star will be making her second U.S. start for Hall of Fame trainer Richard Mandella. The Argentinian miss by the Deputy Minister stallion Key Deputy won twice easily in her native land as a 2-year-old and then just missed in her six-panel North American debut at Del Mar on July 29. She gets leading rider Flavien Prat back in the boot for the Rancho Bernardo.

Stellar Sound, a gray by Tapit, beat Scotish Star in that July 29 race, getting up in the last jump to win by a neck. She's a three-time winner who has been stakes-placed on several occasions and trainer Mike McCarthy has designated rider Juan Hernandez to handle her once more Friday.

Edgeway is a daughter of Competitive Edge who has won four of her seven outings and banked $319,200. She captured the Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn Park in April and has the sort of speed that could put her on the lead as the fastest of the fast in this lineup. Trainer John Sadler has designated Joe Bravo as his filly's pilot.

Here's the full field in post position order with riders and morning line odds:

  1. Scotish Star (9/5)
  2. Hronis Racing's Candura (Umberto Rispoli, 10-1)
  3. Stellar Sound (2-1)
  4. Edgeway (8/5)
  5. Gem Inc or Kagele's Proud Emma (Mike Smith, 8-1)

The Rancho Bernardo goes as Race 6 on an eight-race card. First post for the day is the usual Friday 4 p.m. start.

Gamine Resurfaces in Great Lady M

Last year's GI Breeders' Cup F/M Sprint winner and Eclipse champion Gamine (Into Mischief) looms large in Monday's GII Great Lady M S. at Los Alamitos. The Bob Baffert-trained 'TDN Rising Star' has been perfect in two tries this year–she bested stablemate Qahira (Cairo Prince) by five lengths in Santa Anita's GIII Las Flores S. Apr. 4, and was a facile winner of the GI Derby City Distaff at Churchill May 1 ahead of three next-out stakes winners. The $1.8-million Fasig-Tipton Midlantic topper figures to be extremely tough to beat and will be a very short price, but she still faces some formidable foes, particularly a pair from John Sadler and Hronis Racing.

Edgeway (Competitive Edge) is four-for-six and has never been off the board, having paired up 94 Beyer Speed Figures in a Santa Anita optional claimer in February and the Carousel S. at Oaklawn Apr. 10. She defeated MGSW Frank's Rockette (Into Mischief) in the Carousel. Edgeway's stablemate Candura (Into Mischief) was also last seen in Hot Springs. A debut-winning juvenile at Del Mar, the now 5-year-old missed all of 2019 and 2020, but shook off the rust to annex a pair of optional claimers in April.

Edgeway Earns Initial Stakes Victory In Oaklawn’s Carousel

Prominent from the outset, Hronis Racing LLC's Edgeway got the jump on even-money favorite Frank's Rockette and cruised to victory in Saturday's $250,000 Carousel Stakes at Oaklawn in Hot Springs, Ark., giving the daughter of Competitive Edge her first triumph in a black type race.

Trained by John Sadler and ridden by Joel Rosario, Edgeway ran the six furlongs on a fast main track in 1:10.13 and paid $4.60 as the second wagering choice in the field of six fillies and mare, aged 4 and up.

Frank's Rockette closed to within three-quarters of a length of Edgeway at the wire to be second, with Casual another 1 1/4 lengths back third and Wildwood's Beauty fourth.

Edgeway, third to Kimari in just her second career start in the Purple Martin Stakes at Oaklawn last year, was coming off a Feb. 7 allowance win at Santa Anita, her first start since a runner-up performance in the Grade 3 Dogwood Stakes at Churchill Downs last June. She trained up to the Carousel at Santa Anita.

Mucho Amor jumped out to an early lead, with Edgeway to her outside, but that pair was quickly joined by Wildwood's Beauty who rushed up along the inside to put her nose in front. Those three raced as a team, with Edgeway three wide around the turn and Frank's Rockette track her while a couple of lengths further back. Early fractions were :22.54 for the opening quarter mile and :46.12 for the half.

Edgeway took command in the stretch, passing the furlong marker in :58.08 and sailed on to victory, her fourth in six starts.

Produced from Magical Solution, by Stormin Fever, Edgeway is a 4-year-old bred in Kentucky by Pope McLean, Valerie and David Blethen. She sold for $275,000 at the OBS April Sale of 2-year-olds in training in 2019, where she was consigned by Mayberry Farm.
