Dubawi’s Philomene All Class In the Penelope

There was every reason to believe that a genuine future star of the 2021 Classic season was on display at Saint-Cloud on Tuesday as Godolphin, Ecurie des Monceaux and Ecurie Skymarc Farm's Philomene (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) made light work of the G3 Prix Penelope over the 10 1/2-furlong Prix de Diane distance. Off the mark by a short neck from the subsequent G1 Prix Marcel Boussac runner-up Tasmania (Fr) (Zoffany {Ire}) in a debutantes contest over a mile at ParisLongchamp in September, the Andre Fabre-trained half-sister to the G1 Irish Oaks heroine and G1 Prix de Diane runner-up Chicquita (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) and the G1 MacKinnon S. and G2 Ribblesdale S. heroine Magic Wand (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) was not asked an early question by Mickael Barzalona sauntering in fourth. Making up ground on the leaders with ease as they worked over to the stand's rail, the €1.625million 2019 Arqana Deauville August Yearling Sale topper drew alongside Incarville (Fr) (Wootton Bassett {GB}) and into the lead passing the furlong pole. Hand ridden to score ears pricked by 2 1/2 lengths from that rival, there was the same margin back to Philomene's Listed Prix Rose de Mai-winning stablemate Anasia (GB) (Intello {Ger}) in third to add ballast to the form. “I'm delighted with the way she has run–she had a lovely action and is a really nice filly,” Fabre said of the 4-5 favourite. “I will target the Diane with her and she will have a race in between, but it's too early to say where. She is the only one of the family to have won as a 2-year-old and while she was not that precocious, she has class.”

As the Godolphin website stated, the result also served as a landmark for Dubawi who was becoming the first British stallion to sire 200 stakes winners. Her jockey added, “I was very impatient to see Philomene back on a racetrack and I am very happy with the way she won today. I am sure she will come forward plenty for it. She is a good filly with a lot of class and is very easy to handle, so that will be a very good point in the big races. Andre Fabre knows exactly the way to bring these fillies along. Philomene broke her maiden last year, beating a promising horse, and we have our fingers crossed that she can keep on improving.”

Philomene was big news before she even set foot into the Deauville sales ring, being the eighth foal out of Skymarc Farm and Monceaux's Listed Prix de la Seine winner Prudenzia (Ire) (Dansili {GB}) who has achieved significant renown as a broodmare. Her first offering was an instant hit, with the high-class but also quirky Chicquita capturing the aforementioned Curragh Classic having found only Treve (Fr) (Motivator {GB}) too strong in the Diane. That effort followed a remarkable run-out into the hedge when a surefire winner in a conditions event at this venue, but there was no sign of that kind of wayward tendency as she matured. Eventually snapped up by Coolmore for €6million at the 2013 Goffs November Mares Sale, she went on to finish third in the G1 QIPCO British Champions Fillies & Mares S. and is now the dam of the G3 Silver Flash S. third Secret Thoughts (War Front).

Prudenzia's third foal was Truth (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), bought by Minster Stud for €580,000 at last year's Arqana December Breeding Stock Sale and the dam of Divertissement (Ire) (Shalaa {Ire}) who also contested this race but ran as if something was amiss in last. In 2015 she threw the amazingly consistent Magic Wand, who aside from winning the MacKinnon was also placed in nine other top-level races across the globe. Her next progeny was the G3 Prix de Royaumont third Je Ne Regretterien (GB) by Galileo, while her 2-year-old colt by that giant was the top-priced colt at last year's Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale when selling to MV Magnier for €2million.

Her half-sister Pacifique (Ire) (Montjeu {Ire}) took the G3 Prix de Lutece and was emulated in that feat by her daughter Paix (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}) last term, while another of her half-siblings is English King (Fr) (Camelot {GB}) who captured the Listed Lingfield Derby Trial last June before failing to hit the expected heights. The fourth dam Souk (Ire) (Ahonoora {GB}) is the ancestress of the Sadler's Wells sensation Alexandrova (Ire), who like Chicquita annexed the Irish Oaks having dominated the Epsom Classic, and the G1 Melbourne Cup hero Rekindling (GB) by that former Coolmore monarch's son High Chaparral (Ire).

Group 3 Winner Pollara, In Foal To War Front, Tops Second Day Of Keeneland November Sale At $975,000

Pollara, a Group 3 winner in France who is carrying her first foal by War Front, sold to Arthur Hoyeau, agent, for $975,000 during Tuesday's second session of the Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale, which was marked by international and domestic participation.

A total of 197 horses sold today for $27,690,000, for an average of $140,558 and a median of $100,000.

Through two sessions, 325 horses have grossed $77,465,000, for an average of $238,354 and a median of $135,000.

“Overall the market is strong,” Keeneland President-Elect and Interim Head of Sales Shannon Arvin said. “Five mares sold today for more than $500,000, which is pretty comparable to last year's session. Consignors have commented to us that they have been a little surprised at the strength of the market. So trade is strong.”

Keeneland Director of Sales Operations Geoffrey Russell agreed.

“Phil Schoenthal from Maryland brought Matt Dorman, who's developing a breeding operation, so they are here to fill up a farm,” he said. “Our international clients who came last year are back buying to lay down the foundations for their breeding operations. Keeneland is where the world comes to buy. If you look at the leading buyers at the end of the day. you have European, American and Japanese interests. There was a great mix of people today, and we hope that continues.”

Pollara, a 5-year-old daughter of Camelot, is out of the winning Storm Cat mare Brooklyn's Storm, a half-sister to French highweight and Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner Solemia. She is also from the family of French highweight and multiple Group 1 winner Silasol and group winners Prospect Wells and Prospect Park.

“She is going back to France,” said Henri Bozo, manager of Ecurie des Monceaux, about Pollara. “She is a very exciting mare. She is in foal to a very proven stallion. We try to breed classic winners. She stood out in Book 2.”

Pollara was consigned by Claiborne Farm, agent.

“She's such a nice mare, a group winner in France and in foal to the right horse,” Claiborne President Walker Hancock said. “Every single mare in the family is in foal to a world-leading sire. It's a very active family and they've all been bred to the best sires in the world. There are tons of upside to the family. When you have a page like that, a race record like that and in foal to the right sire the sky's the limit.”

Schoenthal, agent for Dorman's Determined Stud, paid $800,000 for Style and Grace, a winning, 4-year-old daughter of Curlin who is carrying her first foal by City of Light, and $600,000 for Vevina, a 5-year-old, stakes-placed daughter of More Than Ready who is carrying her first foal by Uncle Mo.

Style and Grace, a half-sister to Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile winner Furthest Land, was consigned by Lane's End, agent. Out of the Rahy mare Flagrant, she is from the family of Grade 2 winner Ready for Rye and Grade 3 winner Dynever.

Vevina, who was consigned by Kingswood Farm, is out of My Sugar Bear, by Giant's Causeway. She is from the family of Grade 2 winners Possible Mate and Guided Tour.

Determined Stud is a new breeding and racing operation that acquired several horses at Keeneland's 2020 September Yearling Sale.

“We're just buying quality,” Dorman said about Determined's broodmare purchases on Tuesday. “We have some stallion shares so we have some stallions in mind. The farm is in Boyds, Maryland. We are really looking for quality, so I think the band will be around the 15-horse mark and then we will go from there.”

Lane's End was the session's leading consignor, selling 31 horses for $4,716,000.

Woodford Thoroughbreds paid $575,000 for Grade 3-placed mare Hot Cash, a full-sister to Grade 1 winner Stately Victor carrying her first foal by Curlin. Consigned by Hidden Brook, agent, the 5-year-old daughter of Ghostzapper is out of Grade 1 winner Collect the Cash, by Dynaformer.

“She will be a good addition to the broodmare band,” said Lincoln Collins, who signed the ticket for Hot Cash. “No breeding plans yet; we will sit down and think about it. We knew she was going to be expensive but you never quite know what that means. It is a better market than I think any of us thought it would be. The horse business is alive and well.”

“She sold well. We are happy,” Hidden Brook's Dan Hall said. “She's a young mare who could run and she's in foal to the right horse. (Her sale is part of) a major reduction (for Adena Springs), getting the numbers way down. It makes sense right now. We have close to 90, between mares and weanlings, all in this sale. There has been a lot of interest at the barn at all levels.”

For the second day, a colt from the first crop of undefeated 2018 Triple Crown winner Justify was the session's top-priced weaning. On Tuesday, M.V. Magnier paid $475,000 for the first foal of Grade 3-placed winner Inchargeofme. Nursery Place, agent, consigned the colt, who is from the family of Group 1-placed Johann Straus.

“He's a beautiful-looking horse, and Justify is making very good foals,” Coolmore's David Wachman said. “We're just excited to be able to buy a very nice horse by him. Across the board, they're very good, and he's a very smart horse, that horse. We're happy to have him.”

Yeguada Centurion of Spain led buyers by spending $3,127,000 for 17 horses.

Arc Promise Initiative Earns Over €60,000 in Donations

The Arc Promise, a new fundraising initiative based on the “Breeders’ Cup Pledge, was launched by Au-Dela des Pistes ahead of Arc weeekend. After the results were tabulated, over €60,000 was raised by the connections of every runner that opted to donate a fraction of their earnings in the event of a win or place by their horse(s). The donations will go toward racehorses retired due to injury that need additional support before they can be retrained.

Ecurie des Monceaux donated 30% of its breeders’ premiums, which resulted in a donation of €24,300. Arqana donated €1,000 per winner of its sales graduates, good for €6,000. Other entities that contributed include the Aga Khan Studs, Godolphin SNC, Haras de la Gousserie, Al Asayl, Wertheimer et Frere, China Horse Club, and Ecurie Meiohas, as well as jockeys, jockey agents and trainers. Siyouni’s Sottsass Prevails In the Arc

It was a home success in Sunday’s G1 Qatar Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe as Peter Brant’s Sottsass (Fr) (Siyouni {Fr}) realised his owner’s longtime dream when providing him and Jean-Claude Rouget with a first renewal of the showpiece as Enable (GB) (Nathaniel {Ire}) failed to fire in sixth. Third in 2019, last year’s G1 Prix du Jockey Club hero had stayed slightly under the radar as he was geared towards his second attempt but there were signs that he was nearing a peak when fourth in the G1 Irish Champion S. at Leopardstown Sept. 12. In an ideal spot throughout racing in a close-up third on the rail as Persian King (Ire) (Kingman {GB}) held the lead setting a moderate gallop, the 7-1 shot was delivered by Cristian Demuro to take control with a furlong remaining. Staying on strongly as In Swoop (Ire) (Adlerflug {Ger}) emerged on his inner, the chestnut held on by a neck as Persian King ended up 1 3/4 lengths away in third. “Just after the race last year, I stated that this was his race,” Rouget commented. “I’ve been waiting to win this for such a long time. I always thought he was a horse made for this and it was his only target. The result is there today.”

Only 1 1/4 lengths behind Enable in this last year, Sottsass had started his 4-year-old campaign with an uninspiring fourth in the G2 Prix d’Harcourt over a mile and a quarter May 11 before narrowly denying Way To Paris (GB) (Champs Elysees {GB}) in the 10 1/2-furlong G1 Prix Ganay at Chantilly June 14. Failing by a neck to give six pounds to the high-class Skalleti (Fr) (Kendargent {Fr}) in Deauville’s G2 Prix Gontaut-Biron back over 10 furlongs on heavy ground Aug. 15, he was shaping like a true mile-and-a-half performer when closing steadily on Magical (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), Ghaiyyath (Ire) (Dubawi {Ire}) and the surprise package Armory (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) in the Irish Champion.

With the expected pace having disappeared with the absent Ballydoyle contingent, it was left to PC to make the running on the G1 Prix du Moulin de Longchamp winner Persian King but he was never going to over-do things on a proven mile star. With Olivier Peslier opting to ride a race on Stradivarius (Ire) (Sea the Stars {Ire}) and slot back alongside Frankie on Enable, there was a real possibility that this Arc would favour those closest to the pace and so Demuro deserved credit for keeping Sottsass so prominent. Little changed until the two-furlong pole, when the previous dual winner and 9-10 favourite looked to be going well enough as Frankie started to move.

Instead of spurting forward, Enable laboured and there was a melee involving her and Stradivarius soon after with neither able to take the gap as the 33-1 shot Gold Trip (Fr) (Outstrip {GB}) loomed on the outside and Sottsass switched to the left of Persian King. Leading the sprint for home, the White Birch Farm colour-bearer had slipped out of reach of the G1 Deutsches Derby hero In Swoop, whose forward momentum ultimately made it a closer call than it looked destined to be moments earlier. An inquiry was called into the scrimmaging, which in the older days of French stewarding may have seen a change in the outcome but which resulted in no altering to the placings.

“With the pandemic, his preparation had been far from ideal and the race in Ireland did him a lot of good,” Rouget added. “When we ran in Deauville he was a bit fat and Skalleti is a very good horse. He is a group one horse on soft ground, but we had to run in that race instead of going to York [for the Juddmonte International]. The choice to go to Leopardstown was tough, too, but we chose to run him over a shorter distance to give him speed. I think that was a good choice. He had given us the right signs lately that he was back to his best and at least at the same level as last season. He’s fulfilled those expectations and was a very nice winner. Sottsass is owned in association with Coolmore. I do not know if he will run again, but it is not the question for today. Whether the horse retires is not my decision.” Peter Brant’s racing manager Michel Zerolo said, “We’re all very proud and hopefully he’ll come out of this well and got to the [GI] Breeders’ Cup Turf. Whether he’ll stay in training is a question I can’t answer now.”

In Swoop’s trainer Francis-Henri Graffard said, “Nobody ever remembers the second, but he’s run a very good race. The pace was not very strong and it didn’t suit, as he travelled really nicely compared to usual but like he did in the Grand Prix de Paris he finished strongly in the last 200 metres. He is an improving horse and is proving one of the best 3-year-olds in Europe, so he’s had a good season and we look forward to next year. He has a lot of class.” Fabrice Chappet said of Gold Trip, “He has run a great race, but I feel that on this heavy ground a mile and a half is a shade too far. He made a big move and hung at the end, but it was a great performance.”

Teddy Grimthorpe said of Enable, “Frankie said the ground was too deep. Anyway, she’s given so much to the sport and to Juddmonte and who could have any complaints? We’ll see how she comes out of this and discuss with Prince Khalid whether she can run one more time in the Breeders’ Cup Turf.” John Gosden added, “It turned out be a French-style dash in the straight and it didn’t work out for us and neither horse liked the deep, holding ground. They didn’t have a hard race and they weren’t blowing, so it was like an elaborate journey to go for a nice piece of work up the Longchamp straight! Mr Nielsen is keen to go for a fourth Gold Cup and Prince Khalid will make the decision on Enable. Frankie never touched her with the stick and both were looked after in that ground, so they are looking bright after the race which is extremely good news. Enable’s been amazingly consistent and has been extraordinary in her mental lstrength, so it’s a pity it wasn’t good-to-soft ground and an even gallop today. We were lucky to have that in the other Arcs we ran in and today’s race didn’t play to her strengths at all.”

Sottsass is one of three group winners from as many foals for Starlet’s Sister (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}) and one of two at the highest level after the four-times grade I-winning Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Turf heroine Sistercharlie (Ire) (Myboycharlie {Ire}). The second dam is the G3 Prix Chloe runner-up Premiere Creation (Fr) (Green Tune), who also produced the G3 Prix Cleopatre winner Leo’s Starlet (Ire) and the Listed Prix Isonomy winner and GI Clement L. Hirsch S. runner-up Anabaa’s Creation (Ire) (Anabaa). She is in turn the dam of the stakes winner Create a Dream (Oasis Dream {GB}), while the third dam Allwaki (Miswaki) is also the ancestress of the G3 Prix de Lieurey scorer Sandy’s Charm (Fr) (Footstepsinthesand {GB}) from the family of the G1 Sussex S.-winning champion miler and sire Noalcoholic (Fr) (Nonoalco). Starlet’s Sister’s as-yet unraced 3-year-old colt by Charm Spirit (Ire) is named Radiant Child (Ire), while she also has an unraced 2-year-old colt by Fastnet Rock (Aus) named Parliament (GB). Her yearling filly by Dubawi (Ire) topped the Arqana Deauville September Yearling Sale when selling to Oliver St Lawrence for €2.5million.
