Locked, Victory Avenue Scratch From Fountain Of Youth

'TDN Rising Star' and GI Breeders' Futurity winner Locked (Gun Runner) has scratched from Saturday's GII Coolmore Fountain of Youth S. along with Victory Avenue (Arrogate) according to social media posts from each horses' respective connections along with a release from Gulfstream Park Saturday morning. Locked was 5-2 on the morning line while Victory Avenue was 4-1.

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners noted on X that, “Locked will scratch from today's Fountain of Youth…but still has his eye on the prize. We'll regroup and come up with a game plan.”

“He's [Victory Avenue] a high energy horse and he didn't eat his food and is mouse quiet today,” Ramiro Restrepo told Gulfstream media. “That's totally uncharacteristic.”

Oscar Performance’s Set Runs Them Off Their Feet in Debut

12th-Gulfstream, $70,000, Msw, 2-24, 3yo, 7 1/2fT, 1:27.11, fm, 5 3/4 lengths.
SET (c, 3, Oscar Performance–Three Am Tour {Ire}, by Strategic Prince {GB}) broke well and was quick into stride to show the way from the fence through :24.01 and :47.31 early splits. Never under any threat as 1:10.07 flashed up, it was a race for second place once they hit the stretch as the Mark Casse trainee drew off from the field to win as easily as he pleased by 5 3/4 lengths. Stakes-placed Typhoon Fury (Mitole) had to settle for a well-beaten second.

A half-brother to SP Busy Morning (War Dancer), Set is the most recent to the races for his dam, who was a winning racemare on two continents. Three Am Tour has also produced a yearling colt by Galilean. She visited both Oscar Performance and War Dancer for this spring. Sales history: $150,000 2yo '23 OBSAPR. Anisette Proves Far Too Strong In American Oaks

Crunched into 3-5 favoritism to complete the Southern California turf Oaks double, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Anisette (GB) (Awtaad {Ire}) sat the perfect trip just behind the pace and quickened up decisively in the final eighth of a mile to stamp her authority on Tuesday's GI American Oaks at Santa Anita.

The dark bay, who swept the GII San Clemente S. and GI Del Mar Oaks over the summer, was content to lay third against the rails as Irad Ortiz, Jr. tried to make all the running aboard 'TDN Rising Star' Be Your Best (Ire) (Muhaarar {GB}), who got away with some pretty cheap fractions on the engine. The Mike Ryan colorbearer was given every conceivable chance to finish the task at hand once heads were turned for home, but the chalk pushed away from the fence beneath Umberto Rispoli in upper stretch, easily gathered up the front-runner at the eighth pole and ran out a facile winner. Be Your Best settled for second, while pace-pressing Musical Mischief (Into Mischief) re-rallied for third after appearing destined to finish off the board. It was the second win in the race in the space of three years for Aron Wellman's operation, who campaigned 2021 winner Queen Goddess (Empire Maker) in partnership in a race rained onto the main track.

Though this race, the brainchild of longtime bi-coastal racing office maestro Martin Panza, was celebrating just its 22nd running, Anisette is the second to complete the Del Mar/American Oaks double, joining Lady of Shamrock (Scat Daddy) in 2012, when the races were run back-to-back and in reverse order in July (at original host site Hollywood Park) and August.

“She's the goods,” said winning trainer Leonard Powell. “Aron Wellman and I have chosen to give her plenty of time in between races and that's probably the key of keeping her at the top of her game. She is happy and healthy, so that is the main thing.”

An all-weather maiden winner in three starts in England for Kevin Philippart de Foy, Anisette swept the Del Mar series over the summer, but settled for second in her last two, against the high-class Didia (Arg) (Orpen) in the GII Rodeo Drive S. over this course and trip Oct. 7 and versus her peers in the one-mile GIII Autumn Miss S. Nov. 5.

Pedigree Notes:

One of two elite-level scorers for her sire, along with G1 Prix d'Ispahan winner Anmaat (Ire), Anisette–a 26,000gns graduate of the 2021 Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale–is one of two winners from four to the races out of a daughter of the stakes-winning Soft Centre, also the dam of G1 Nassau S. heroine Sultanina (Ire) (New Approach {Ire}). The stakes-winning third dam produced Dalvina (GB) (Grand Lodge) and SW French Dressing (GB) (Sea The Stars {Ire}), the dam of 2021 G3 Hampton Court S. winner Mohaafeth (Ire) (Frankel {GB}). Anisette's 2-year-old half-brother Eton Mes (Ire) (Expert Eye {GB}) was a 37,000gns RNA at the 2022 Tattersalls November Sale and her yearling filly Glamourous Marlene (Ire) (Make Believe {GB}) was hammered down to Blandford Bloodstock for 65,000gns at Tattersalls October this fall. Tutti Frutti was most recently covered by Magna Grecia (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}). Anisette was catalogued to last month's Keeneland November Sale, but was ultimately withdrawn.

Making Waves: Pura Vida On The Double

In this series, the TDN takes a look at notable successes of European-based sires in North America. This week's column is highlighted by the victories of Buffoon and Kick A Rhyme for trainer Mike Maker and Pura Vida Investments during the past week.

Lope De Vega Colt Strikes At Keeneland

Buffoon (Fr) (Lope De Vega {Ire}) put it all together at second asking at Keeneland for Pura Vida Investments and trainer Mike Maker on Saturday (video).

Bred by Ecurie des Monceaux and Rifa Mustang Europe, Ltd., the €175,000 Arqana August yearling selection of Deuce Greathouse is out of After Dawn (Ire) (Invincible Spirit {Ire}), herself a half-sister to sires and Group 1 winners Ectot (GB) and Most Improved (Ire). He is followed by a yearling filly by Sottsass (Fr) who brought €130,000 at the Arqana October yearling Sale from Oceanic Bloodstock. Under the stakes-winning Danehill third dam Mahalia (Ire) is GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroine Meditate (Ire) (No Nay Never) among others.

Ballylinch's Lope De Vega has one of the best records of any European sire with his progeny in North America, and Buffoon is his 40th winner from 74 runners there (54%). Besides a pair of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf heroines in Newspaperofrecord (Ire) and Aunt Pearl (Ire), the stallion has five additional stakes winners in America.

Night Of Thunder Filly Stars Beneath Twin Spires

Kick A Rhyme (Ire) (Night Of Thunder {Ire}) was the second winner in less than a week for Pura Vida Investments and trainer Mike Maker when taking a Churchill Downs maiden on Nov. 1 (video). The filly was making her third start.

Bred by Irish National Stud Mare Syndicate II, the dark bay was picked up by BBA Ireland for €150,000 as a Goffs Orby yearling on the bid of Deuce Greathouse and Pura Vida. Out of the listed-placed Adhwaa (GB) (Oasis Dream {GB}), the filly is a half-sister to multiple group winner Alflaila (GB) (Dark Angel {Ire}) and is her dam's final foal.

The seventh winner from 13 runners (54%) for her Darley sire, Kick A Rhyme has a quartet of paternal half-siblings that have found black-type in the U.S. Night Of Thunder's best get there are Grade III winners Sopran Basilea (Ire) and Pocket Square (GB).

Markaz Filly Wins In Arcadia

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners' Yerwanthere (Ire) (Markaz {Ire}) rallied to win at Santa Anita for trainer Patrick Gallagher on Saturday (video).

Part of the Kilnamoragh Stud breeding programme, the 4-year-old filly won her first start in Ireland for owner/breeder Jim Browne and trainer Pat Foley. Eclipse purchased the filly after that start and moved her to Joseph O'Brien, and she took a Dundalk handicap in December of 2022. Sent to America after three more appearances, she debuted with a fourth at Del Mar in August prior to her win last weekend. A half-sister to the winning Listed Brigids Pastures S. third Special Wan (Ire) (Belardo {Ire}), Yerwanthere is also a half-sister to the unraced juvenile filly Over The Blues (Ire) (Bungle Inthejungle {GB}) and a yearling colt by Profitable (Ire). Second dam Slow Jazz (Chief's Crown) won two stakes, and she is also a half-sister to G1 Cheveley Park S. winner Blue Duster (Danzig).

Yerwanthere is one of two winners from three runners (66%) in the U.S. for Dark Angel's Markaz. On an international level, all three of his stakes winners have won at Group 3 level in Ireland (2) and France (1).

Repeat Winners

Klaravich Stables' Redistricting (GB) (Kingman {GB}) improved his record to two wins from three starts with a victory in New York on Saturday (video). The Chad Brown trainee was previously featured in Making Waves in June.
