Nest Much The Best In Demoiselle Stakes At Aqueduct

Nest overcame a wide trip on both turns to bid for the lead in the stretch of the Demoiselle Stakes at Aqueduct Racetrack. The 2-year-old daughter of Curlin took over inside the last sixteenth to win the Grade 2 stakes by a neck over Venti Valentine.

Sitting midpack early, Nest bided her time on the outside of horses as Magic Circle held a one-length lead, with Full Court Felicia and Venti Valentine in second and third down the backstretch at the Ozone Park, N.Y., racetrack. Through a first quarter in :25.05 and a half mile in :50.72, Magic Circle held on to that one-length lead heading into the far turn, as Irad Ortiz Jr. on Nest went four-wide into the stretch.

In the Aqueduct straight, Magic Circle, Venti Valentine, and Nest were three across, as Magic Circle tried to hold on under pressure from her challengers. Ortiz Jr. set Nest down for a drive, taking the lead inside the last sixteenth of a mile. At the wire, Nest was a neck in front of Venti Valentine, with Magic Circle holding on for third.

The final time for the 1 1/8 miles was 1:55.07. Find this race's chart here.

Nest paid$5.50, $3.10, and $2.20. Venti Valentine paid $5.40 and $3.70. Magic Circle paid $3.30.

“There have been some tight finishes and a little drama to go along with it, but I'm thankful to be on the right side of it all. She [Nest] was never able to take over and save much ground, but she got the job done. I'm obviously very happy to be on the winning end,” trainer Todd Pletcher said after the race. “We'll take her to Palm Beach Downs and map out a game plan with Mike [Repole] and the rest of the owners, but she'll get a freshening after this win.”

“She ran a good race today, we were looking forward to the distance and she got the job done today,” Irad Ortiz Jr. told the NYRA Press Office after the Demoiselle. “I knew the seven horse [Magic Circle] was inside and came out. I was just surprised that they claimed foul on me, honestly. I grabbed a hold of my filly, corrected her, went to the left hand and went straight. I didn't do anything to the other horse so I don't know why they claimed foul, but it is what it is.”

Bred in Kentucky by Ashview Farm and Colts Neck Stables, Nest is out of the A.P. Indy mare Marion Ravenwood. She is trained by Todd Pletcher and owned by Repole Stables, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, and Michael House. Consigned by Ashview Farm, Nest was purchased by Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Repole Stables for $350,000 at the 2020 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. With her win in the G2 Demoiselle, the filly has two wins in three starts, for career earnings of $205,000. The victory earns the 2-year-old filly 10 points toward the 2022 Kentucky Oaks, with Venti Valentine receiving four points, Magic Circle two points, and Nostalgic one point.

Curlin’s Nest Completes Double for Hot Connections in Demoiselle

Repole Stable, Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners and Michael House's Nest (Curlin) completed a juvenile Grade II double for trainer Todd Pletcher and jockey Irad Ortiz, Jr. as she out-kicked two-for-two New York-bred Venti Valentine (Firing Line) in Saturday afternoon's GII Demoiselle S. at the Big A. It was a record seventh Demoiselle victory for Pletcher, who one race earlier sent out Mo Donegal (Uncle Mo) to a similarly hard-fought score in the GII Remsen S. The Lyster family's Ashview Farm and Richard Santulli's Colts Neck Stables bred both the Remsen and Demoiselle winners.

A five-length debut graduate going 8 1/2 panels at Belmont Sept. 25, Nest was a close third in the Nov. 5 Tempted, finishing a neck behind re-opposing Magic Circle (Kantharos). Nest was hung wide in midpack Saturday as Magic Circle raced clear through splits of :25.05 and :50.72. She mounted a four-wide bid approaching the quarter pole, with Venti Valenti glued to her left flank and the pacesetter struggling her leads but still up by daylight. Nest lengthened her stride and had a bit more to give late, reporting home a half-length clear of Venti Valentine in 1:55.07 (compared to 1:53.61 for the Remsen). An objection lodged by Venti Valentine's rider John Velazquez against the winner was disallowed.

“She ran a good race today, we were looking forward to the distance and she got the job done today,” said Ortiz, who rode four winners on the afternoon and survived at least two potential disqualifications after a high-profile DQ on Friday. “I knew [Magic Circle] was inside and came out. I was just surprised that they claimed foul on me, honestly. I grabbed a hold of my filly, corrected her, went to the left hand and went straight. I didn't do anything to the other horse, so I don't know why they claimed foul, but it is what it is.”

Pletcher took last year's Demoiselle with eventual GI Longines Kentucky Oaks heroine and likely champion 3-year-old Malathaat (Curlin), and won back-to-back renewals with Repole in 2012 and 2013 (Unlimited Budget and Stopchargingmaria) amidst a three-year streak. He'd go on to saddle the GI Cigar Mile H. exacta one race later on Saturday.

“There have been some tight finishes and a little drama to go along with it, but I'm thankful to be on the right side of it all,” said the Hall of Famer. “[Nest] was never able to take over and save much ground, but she got the job done. I'm obviously very happy to be on the winning end.”

As for what could be on the agenda next for Nest, who picked up 10 Kentucky Oaks qualifying points Saturday, Pletcher said, “We'll take her to Palm Beach Downs and map out a game plan with Mike [Repole] and the rest of the owners, but she'll get a freshening after this win.”

Pedigree Notes:
Nest becomes the 87th stakes winner (46th graded) for Hill 'n' Dale super sire Curlin. She is bred on the same cross as the aforementioned Malathaat, along with fellow two-turn GISWs Global Campaign and her full-brother Idol and this year's pricey GSW and 'TDN Rising Star' First Captain. Legendary A.P. Indy is up to 245 stakes winners (115 graded) as a broodmare sire. A.P. Indy's son Bernardini is the damsire of two of Curlin's 16 Grade I winners himself and he was out of a Quiet American mare, as is Nest's dam.

Repole co-campaigned Curlin's highest earner to date, in Pletcher-trained Eclipse champion Vino Rosso; and Eclipse and Pletcher teamed up on the career of MGISW filly Curalina (Curlin).

Nest's dam Marion Ravenwood was herself a stakes winner at the Big A and sold for $400,000 at the 2017 Keeneland September sale while in foal to Pioneerof the Nile. Idol, this year's GI Santa Anita H. winner, sold the following September as a yearling for $375,000 at Keeneland. The first foal bred by Ashview and Colts Neck became fellow useful two-turner Dr Jack, and agent Steve Young purchased Marion Ravenwood's current yearling colt by Violence for $275,000 this September. Marion Ravenwood, whose dam was GSW/MGISP, was bred to Curlin and Quality Road for 2022.

God of Love First Graded Winner for Cupid

God of Love closed stoutly to give freshman sire Cupid (Tapit) his first graded victory in the GIII Grey S. at Woodbine Sunday. The chestnut colt broke from the outside and was caught five wide into the first turn while racing towards the back of the field. He had one horse beaten down the backstretch behind an opening quarter in :24.42 and a half in :49.58, but he began inching closer approaching the far turn. Caught wide once again turning for home, God of Love stormed into contention at the top of the lane and strode effortlessly to the lead in the final strides for an authoritative victory.

God of Love broke his maiden in the Cup and Saucer S. over the Woodbine lawn Oct. 10, but was mired in traffic before closing to finish fifth as the favorite over the Tapeta in the Coronation Futurity last time out Oct. 30.

Pedigree Notes:

No Wonder, also the dam of 2018 Clarendon S. winner Muskoka Wonder (Into Mischief), has a weanling filly by Where's the Ring and was bred back to Ami's Holiday. The mare is a half-sister to multiple Grade I winner Weemissfrankie (Sunriver) and to graded placed Stop Smiling (It's No Joke).

The late breeder William Graham purchased No Wonder, in foal to Into Mischief, for $53,000 at the 2016 Fasig-Tipton February sale. In foal to Good Samaritan, No Wonder sold for $25,000 at the 2019 Keeneland November sale.

Winner of the 2017 GI Gold Cup at Santa Anita, Cupid is also the sire of two-time stakes winner The Sky Is Falling and graded placed Desert Dawn.

God Of Love Gets First Graded Stakes Win In Grey At Woodbine

Mark Casse went two for two in graded stakes Sunday at Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto, Ontario. God of Love went wide on the far turn to find running room in the stretch and take the Grade 3 Grey Stakes by a length and a half.

In a crowded field of 12 on a snowy day at Woodbine, Churchtown was the fastest out of the gate, taking a one-length lead as the field approached the first turn. Down the backstretch, Churchtown maintained his lead with Stowaway, Ironstone, and Hicksy stalking. God of Love was next to last on the backstretch, jockey Rafael Hernandez keeping him on the outside of horses as they entered the far turn.

Four-wide into the stretch, Hernandez set God of Love down for a drive as Ironstone passed Churchtown in the Woodbine straight. In the race's final sixteenth, God of Love rallied past Ironstone and On Thin Ice to take the G3 Grey Stakes. Churchtown held on for fourth. Heat Merchant, Hicksy, Be Like Clint, International, Stowaway, and Shamateur rounded out the order of finish.

The final time for the 1 1/16 miles over the all-weather course was 1:44.20. Find this race's chart here.

God of Love paid $11.60, $5.70, and $3.40. Ironstone paid $6.10 and $5.00. On Thin Ice paid $7.00.

Bred in Ontario by William D. Graham, God of Love is by Cupid out of the Three Wonders mare No Wonder. He is owned by Gary Barber and Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, who purchased the 2-year-old colt from Golden Thoroughbreds Training and Sales for $100,000 at the 2021 Ocala Breeders' Sales Company March Two-Year-Olds In Training Sale. With his win in the G3 Grey, God of Love has two wins in four starts for career earnings of $208,993. God of Love's G3 stakes win gives sire Cupid his first graded stakes winner.
